During the Solomon Islands campaign, a Marine on night sentry duty heard someone approaching in the jungle and fired a few bursts from his machine gun. A voice called out: “Hold up your fire! We are Americans. I am bringing in my platoon.” The Marine responded by blasting away with his weapon, wiping out a Japanese patrol. When asked how he knew they were the enemy, he explained that they were “Just too damned grammatical to be Marines.”
Normally there would have been a challenge and a countersign, but things often get screwed up in heavy combat.
Note that the marine has a 50 round drum magazine locked on his Thompson submachine gun but his ammo belt has the much more common 20 round stick mags. Drum mags were issued and used by the the US and Britain early in the war. The drum magazines were not popular because they rattled, were awkward to carry more than one, and were more prone to malfunctions and so their use was discontinued.
This picture was most likely taken on what was known as Bloody Ridge (Edson’s Ridge) on Guadalcanal, the scene of two do or die back and forth battles during the battle for Guadalcanal. Naval actions not considered, it was a combination of terrain, disease, starvation, and the two crushing defeats trying to take this ridge that finally broke the back of the Japanese efforts to retake the island.
This reminds me of the movie, a WWII battle scene, John Wayne was the star, he told his soldiers to make a click sound with a little metal piece so that they would know it was US soldiers trying to enter their area, and when questioned, as instructed, the party trying to enter did not do the clicking sound, and similar to this story, they had been enemy combatants that were taken out.
My dad had made one of those clicker things to show all of us kids in the neighborhood how it was used. We’d play blind man’s bluff in the snow that winter (only played during blizzards) and one of the boys on the sled being pulled (they would use a stick to mark the path in the snow for the ‘It’ to find us) used the clicker he had made while being pulled, and gave away our position! He was not allowed to be on the sled after that.

On further review I am questioning my original assessment of where this pic was taken. I notice that the Browning light machine gun does not have a belt in it and is the air cooled version. The version used on Bloody Ridge that held off the Japanese was the water cooled version. Also if this pic was taken on Bloody Ridge it was well after the battles there. The place was terrible until the Japanese bodies had been bull dozed under due to the stink and flies.
I have only had the experience of being in close contact with one decomposing human body that had been in hot weather for any period of time and I will never forget that stench.
So I really have no idea where that pic was taken. But it was most likely fairly early in the campaign to take the Solomon chain.

Every warming period and cold period seems to coincide with either the rise or fall of great empires or societies.
The French Revolution isn’t noted there. It is generally agreed to have started in earnest in July of 1789 with the fall of the Bastille.

Alexander the Great’s string of victories spanned from 326 to 323 BC. His Armies also had to cross mountain ranges at times.
The power of the Vikings peaked during the MWP. Their settlement in Greenland was ended by the LIA when they could no longer grow crops for fodder for their livestock. There were two main settlements in Greenland. There was a large enough population that in 1126 a Diocese with a Bishop and a small Cathedral was built.
The peak of the plague/Black Death occurred in Europe sometime during the period 1348 and 1350 during the LIA. The cold drove people to spend more time inside their hovels making infection more probable. That was combined with famines due to crop failures which significantly weakened the general populations.
It is clear that cold is far more dangerous for humanity than hot and always has been.

We now have the disturbance offshore of the southeast US coast that was discussed a few days ago. So far, convective cells are intermittent and short-lived, with some large downdrafts observed, indicating thermodynamic conditions are not currently optimal for immediate development of a tropical cyclone. Loving Lord, as the day is coming to an end, I want to thank You for being with me in all that has taken place today. I also want to lay the whole day before You, asking that you would show me if there is anything that I have done to hurt or harm another person unknowingly, or if I have done anything that is displeasing in Your sight, or quenched the work of the Spirit in me, so that I may turn away from such things in the days that lie ahead.
Lord, I desire to do Your will in all things. I pray that You would cleanse me of any wrong thoughts or attitudes that may have surfaced in my heart today. Wash me in Your cleansing flood, I pray.

On a small Irish website that is not part of the mainstream media and political narrative, I found an interesting article encouraging the reading of Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment.
He writes about the main character:

There is an irony in the preamble to the Irish Constitution (1937)

The men who drafted this constitution wrote far more wisely than they realized
but sadly there are not many Irish politicians today that would give this preamble unqualified assent and vocal support.
