Amazing how time flies. Summer of 1976 I became street legal (drivers license) and was making $3 an hour cash with no tax deductions.
1976 – I remember the re-enactments and celebrations all year long.
Especially loved the Tall Ships. I heard they are returning though fewer of these historical sailing vessels remain. They’ll sail here from all over the world. NY appearance…assume Boston too.
I’m getting so excited for our country which I thought we had lost. This will be a spectacular 250th year.
It’ll be a blast to see Old Ironsides sail again for this celebration.
I checked and the frigate USS Constitution (Old Ironsides) is still anchored at the Charlestown Navy Yard in Boston –the oldest commissioned warship afloat.
My beauette and I toured Boston 3 months ago and the USS Constitution IS anchored there in all her glory.
Recommend taking the tour of this beauty although those with handicaps will have a hard time going below deck.
The guide said that they sail out once a year to turn her around.
Another special moment is at sunrise and sunset every day of the year when they raise/lower the American flag. We went at sunset so we could hear them play “Retreat” and fire one of the cannons. Pretty cool!
I visited Boston in 2010 and the USS Constitution was one of my must-sees. Well, as luck would have it, on the day I arrived she was closed for maintenance. Needless to say it was disappointing, but it was still a thrill to see her up close. One thing that struck me was that she seemed so small for a warship. I expected something huge and dominating lol.

Because of my attendance at a national convention for Christian booksellers in Atlantic City, I was on the east coast in July of 1976. There was NO WAY I was going to miss getting to Philadelphia for the first time. My parents and older siblings were there in 1950, while my next brother up and I were parked with aunts and uncles in Montana…..
So I made a side trip to Philadelphia before the long plane ride back home to California. I attended a performance of 1976 on the little “mall” area at Independence Hall, spent time inside the Hall and did some quiet walking around the streets nearby. Those streets (with Betsy Ross’ house, etc…) were still tree-lined and amazing at the time. I hope they still are.
Then in 1986, my family/I drove 3000 miles cross country to do things on the east coast and that time we all got through Independence Hall. Youngest son had just graduated from high school at the time and older son was stationed at Camp Lejeune. No way we were going to miss getting them through Independence Hall. Valley Forge. (Mosquitoes on the Outer Banks…..but that’s another story.)
For the Texans here—on the way back, yes, we drove through Texas. I’m a Montanan and thought that driving east/west through Montana was a proper experience. Driving East/West through Texas is not a proper experience: it’s a lifetime and an epoch.
We did that Amtrak freedom train thing. Pulled into town and my dad mumbled something about trains being socialist. And he grew up in NYC!

Born and raised in Camden, NJ just across the Ben Franklin bridge from Philly. In grammar school, the “field trips” were invariably to Independence Hall. Over that stretch, we must have visited the Hall 15-16 times. In those days (the fifties), there was minimal security barriers. Entrance was the middle door of the building (look at Independence Hall on the back of a $100.00 bill). When you went in there was a foyer with a room on the left, one on the right and stair case to the second floor room where they debated and wrote the Constitution. Towards the back of the foyer was the Liberty Bell… just sitting there minding its own business. All the kids, including me, would touch and rub the Bell for good luck. Once in a while some kid would strike it with a stone or coin and “ring” the Bell. The Guard would then admonish “Don’t ring the Bell”. If given an opportunity, everyone should visit the Hall and the Bell. If you can go to the second floor, you can look into the room where the Fathers debated the writing of the Constitution. Stand there, close your eyes, touch the door jamb. You will be connecting to history and a wonderful history it is.
I was able to go to the second floor. That was an amazing little chunk of time for me. Just kept staring at the wood work, at the floor, at the ceiling, at the windows….and thinking………………………here’s where they got it done.
I grew up in Philly. I had the chance to go to the 2nd floor at night and the park ranger played the harpsichord. I felt like I had stepped back in time. It was magical.
I touched the Liberty Bell multiple times. Unfortunately no one is allowed to touch the bell anymore. No one is allowed on the 2nd floor of Independence Hall anymore.
I wanted to go to Independence Hall during the Bicentennial festivities but I had to settle for the local celebration (12 years old at the time). Growing up in Allentown, PA I could walk a mile from my house to go to the place where one could touch and ring an exact replica of the Liberty Bell.

This past Flag Day/President Trump’s Birthday, the commie protestors were told to leave their Mexican and rainbow flags home, and instead wave American flags. To show that MAGA cannot hijack the flag as the symbol for our movement, or some such malarkey.
It didn’t really stick, though. My lefty neighbors don’t have American flags up; many of them never have, on any of the past holidays. Fine with me. It is nice to know who can be counted on in the clutch.
