The 20 existing B-2 aircraft have- and are -performing at a brilliant level – but time marches on.
The B-21 Raider is planned to take over the B-2’s mission.
30 years as the nation’s premier strategic bomber is fantastic – but yes, it cannot continue forever.
And it is perceptive to note, how the people who created the B-52 are all long departed… and the people who designed and created the B-2 are now retired or passing on (and special note to the late Jack Northrop, who designed the YB-35 and YB-49 ‘Flying Wings’ 80 years ago… and who was able to see the prototype designs of the B-2 before he died in 1981).
Which is another way of saying that the B-2’s design dates from nearly 45 years ago – and yes, that was a different America.

The unit will likely receive a Presidential Unit Meritorious Service medal. History will certainly recognize their accomplishments, and over time the operation will be studied in military colleges everywhere. They, themselves, will take immense pride in what they, their comrades, and their Service accomplished. They will be treated as heroes amongst their own. Am I the only one who heard Iran say they had moved all their equipment out of those sites to safe places days before they were bombed? So is this fight over the extent of the damage just a distraction?
Not necessarily. Let’s just look at the practical implications: let’s say they successfully moved the uranium and some amount of hardware… where are they gonna put it? There is no other ready-to-go facility. And given the timing, there is NO WAY they moved any hardware, except maybe some laptops and USB thumbdrives.
What I’m wondering… was there some “coordination” at some very deep level… as in, IAEA, US, and Iran… to actually remove the uranium because it was understood with 100% certainty that “in the near future, we don’t know when, we will bomb those facilities and you literally won’t even see it coming”. At this point, no measurable radiation, right? And those instruments to detect radiation are hella sensitive. I can’t imagine that even buried deep underground with the collapsing and the whatnot that there was 0% ejected material. But who knows.
