Vance Luther Boelter, 57, continues to evade authorities as the manhunt for him widens. The manhunt followed Boelter, disguised as a police officer, fatally shot former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, and wounded State Senator John Hoffman and his wife in their homes.
During their investigation, police allegedly discovered a hit list in Boelter’s imposter-police SUV. That list contained roughly 70 names.
Minnesota – A vehicle associated with a suspect in a shocking political assassination and shooting outside Minneapolis was found empty Sunday afternoon in a rural area about 50 miles away, according to authorities.
The suspect, identified by authorities as Vance Luther Boelter, 57, posed as a law enforcement officer to gain access to the Minneapolis-area victims’ homes in the pre-dawn hours on Saturday, officials said. Authorities said he and police officers exchanged gunfire before he fled on foot.
Authorities on Sunday declined to specify the type of vehicle found in rural Sibley County and warned area residents to lock their doors and vehicles as police searched the area.
“Suspect not located. Keep your doors locked and vehicles secured,” warns the alert, as read to USA TODAY by a Sibley County emergency dispatcher.
Authorities said the suspect’s wife was stopped on Saturday morning about 120 miles away from where his vehicle was found. (read more)

First, who called the police (who confronted the shooter)? Two couples were shot and wounded/dead. How did the police know to go to the home soon enough to get into a confrontation with him before he could flee the scene. I don’t think he is eating at a macdonalds’ and leaving behind water bottles and facing public cctv cameras. This guy has at least some knowledge about security and has traveled quite a bit. That means he has a good chance to put distance and time away from the hunters and possibly stay free for an indefinite amount of time. But that takes usually a very specific kind of psycho killer…one with great discipline and self sacrifice and the ability to move and to get jobs without causing attention. those are traits very few psycho killers actually have…ted kazinsky got caught because he wrote letters. and MORE IMPORTANTLY because he could not stop himself from drawing attention AND because he was not able and capable of putting in the “distance”…if this guy has smarts (I doubt it), he has already gone and will stay gone and has already established a new life and new identity and has the discipline to never draw attention. Also noting: it was the newly realized skillset of a psychologist at the FBI who would utilize profiling to delimit a very long list of potential actors in the kazinsky case. What this new skill realized is that traditional detective work could be super enhanced by the novel use of psychological profiling. It’s not perfect, but it can be highly effective filtering through “candidates”. kazinsky used certain specific material in his bombs. They had good information already based on that alone and the kinds of similar designs that they were dealing with someone who was probably brilliant but also street dumb. Also the FBI, against policy and predicate, made the decision to publish the manifest. I am going out on a limb here *speculative* but it is my opinion, they already have figured out kazinsky…but needed to develop a lead that was fresh unadulterated and could be used in a trial for a conviction. The brothers’ reaction to reading the manifest and contacting law enforcement was how they were able to make a case happen in court. Those being the days when you really did have to get a search warrant.
