Nothing “mysterious” about it. It was a very early interplanetary space probe that ran afoul of a booster problem. I think that it would now be very interesting to look again at it. It was actually one of many such probes, and the one that “got stuck.” I’d like to see it again, now that we know that it landed without mishap.

It will be worth the effort, and cost, to retrieve the probe – the opportunity to understand the long term effects of being in space, studying the materials of that device could answer a multitude of questions those planning on setting up Moon, Mars colonies could take advantage of.
I imagine nations with interplanetary ambitions, USA, China, Russia, not to mention the Musk’s and Bezo’s of the world, will be scrambling to put together resources to retrieve it.
That’s certainly how I feel. Here’s a genuine piece of history: something sent in the 1960’s to explore a distant planet. And, it got STUCK for fifty years. Now it’s back, and undamaged! It just made a great big splash.
We can easily calculate exactly where it is now. And risk no human life to retrieve it. We just need a robot submersible and a long cable.
I think that we should go get it back. Put it in an international museum: volunteer the Smithsonian. This is HISTORY, and technology at what was then the absolute state of the art. Who cares which nation did it? At the time, many nations were reaching beyond the boundaries of this world. Here is an ARTIFACT! Undamaged!

I was employed at Hughs Aircraft in the late 1970’s when the Venus Probe was launched and, when the first photos were shown to cheering crowds who worked on the project. It was a big event. The probe was sent into space via propulsion from earth where it came into the atmosphere of Venus, photographed then was sent on a trajectory using the planets (Venus) orbit toward the sun, gathering data along the way, until it was ultimately destroyed . I’m no rocket scientist ( I just worked on the drawings) , but I am some what skeptical as to how a satellite can return to earth after being in another planets atmosphere without propulsion. My thinking is spy satellite.

No, these probes were always intended to be, “one way.” Just like the ones we have sent to the very outer limits of our solar system. Some of which amazingly are still returning data.
I think that if we now can grab an intact example of just such a “meant to be one-way probe,” undamaged, we should promptly make it a high priority to do so.
It only ‘returned’ because it never escaped low earth orbit. It really just slowly fell as its orbit degraded and finally succumbed to gravity.

Most of it burned up re-entering the atmosphere. It also broke into smaller pieces as it burned so what’s left is probably not worth retrieving,
Obviously, we now have “extremely real-time data” to conclude whether the artifact actually survived intact. And we will then base our recovery efforts accordingly.
I base this upon previous re-entries that I have read about. As for recovery, it’s a big ocean, so good luck with that.
I don’t know that it could really be located or that it actually survived intact, but I do know that it’s design was unique and meant to plunge through the thick hot Venusian atmosphere, so it might have survived, it’s quite unique as satellite reentries go.
It did survive intact due to the fact it was really beefed up to withstand the super hot planetary conditions it was sent to study on Venus.
The problem was it failed to escape low orbit and had been flying at that altitude all these years, which meant its specially designed multi-layer heat resistant exterior remained intact. This allowed it to survive earth re-entry in good condition.
Now how it might survive a saltwater soaking…..well…that’s another question entirely. The mission plan never included that contingency.
They tracked it and know where it splashed down. And it was too heavy to do anything but sink, so it’s totally doable to locate it.
This re-entry was different from what we normally see because it was a mission to Venus, which is a hellishly hot and harsh planet, so they built it with multiple layers of a heat resistant exterior. The plan was for it to survive the approach long enough to get relatively close to the planet while still sending data before it became a crispy critter. It was a unique mission for its time.

Your idea of trying to molly coddle people and “wean them off” is questionable at best and borders on the macabre. Begin by making “Repeal the 17th Amendment, restore the rights of the State legislatures to choose who is to be the voice for their State” a thing – slowly at first, put the seeds of repeal into the minds of the everyday person, and then all at once that leg of the 3-part balance to the underpinnings of the Constitution gets restored.
Once that is done, have the individual States pass amendments to their State Constitutions to implement either term limits, and age limits, or both.

There’s a rather interesting thing that’s happened in the sector — across the sector — since Trump’s inauguration.
Stock prices in the sector have crashed; with many names down 50% or more, even among those firms with drugs that are in the approval pipeline with published positive results (that is, awaiting final FDA review.)
This is not the sort of thing you’d expect in a marketplace where reported results from trials are objectively correct. Certainly those firms with a dubious early record that are a “close” judgment call on their particular drugs being developed are one thing; it is the truth that most drug investigations fail.
This implies that the public markets are saying that the former way of doing business resulted in firms with drugs that were less than honestly reported as to results, or which were approved and thus the companies made money on them despite them not working or perhaps being unsafe.
I’m not stating that’s where the facts lie but it is what the market’s reaction is saying. This is a sector I’ve followed for quite some time as I’m reasonably good at understanding the agents and purported methods of action and figuring out whether the claims are plausible. Back in the 2008 timeframe when absolutely nothing looked good generally as an investment this was a focal area for me for that exact reason; I was seeking specific companies that I thought had a decent crack at some sort of innovation in the space and would ultimately be winners.
I don’t and haven’t talked about specific firms often in the past — but this is still an area where I spend some analysis time and occasionally put a few small punts out there in that a hit in this area can easily be a 20 bagger, which is a hell of a return unobtainable in most sectors of the economy. Of course when you’re wrong what you stuck in can be a zero, so there’s that on the other side of the equation.
This pattern bothers me — a lot — because it implies that none of these firms have a forward going business prospect and that implicates the review and approval process over the last several decades, assuming its true.
There are many doing a lot of screaming in specific areas but this is not specific — it stretches across the entire biotech space, and in my opinion is well worth paying attention to.

In 2024, according to the Tax Foundation, Americans spent 7.9 billion hours complying with IRS tax filing and reporting requirements. People always talk about competing with China but I think most everyone misses the importance of what I will call building block industries that are very unsexy but vital. Let me give you an example.
In buildings and electrical stations all over America you have electrical panels. These can be the hook up from the grid to the house to the breaker stations to even key equipment in transformers. These really aren’t high tech but it definitely takes engineering and semi-skilled labor to make these different components and panels.
China has a stranglehold on this sector even though there is probably a 1 year delay on these panels and components longer for bigger panels. You literally can’t build buildings in America without these panels but we have outsourced that to America for subsidized copper.
Yes, the headline grabbing things like AI are important but there are an enormous number of products and sectors like this which are the absolute building block and we are effectively at China’s mercy.

The part often not reported is that China is also beginning to invest in the technologies (scrubbers and super heating) that allow for the “clean burning” of Coal. Granted, China Inc. is late to the game in cleaning up their air but they are making the attempt.
This technology does increase cost of burning coal, which the reason the US went to gas, nuclear and GREEN when it first became available over 30 years ago. Today in the US, the GREEN Weenies have become so heavily entrenched in State and Local Governments that they have successfully STOPPED the use of the “Clean Coal” technologies.
Time to dust off the power plant plans and re-evaluate to better exploit a mineral the US has in abundance.
Thorium reactor advocate Kirk Sorensen has pointed out that conventional uranium based reactors work on a razor/razor blade profit model. The primary profit is not made from building the reactor, it’s made from selling the highly custom fuel modules.
Thus, any country, like the US, that has the uranium based module profit center has no corporate lobbyist support for thorium in our corporate owned government or any other incentive to make thorium reactors since bags or barrels of salts to feed the thorium reactors are not unique to any particular reactor and could easily be supplied by anyone in the business.
A nation where that custom module profit center doesn’t exist OR can be overridden by government control, like China, will be the one that produces a thorium reactor.

Next up is online reprocessing which reduces the waste output that leaves the site by a factor of 100 and its danger by a factor of 1,000, having waste only dangerous for a few hundred years that ultimately leaves instead of waste that is dangerous for 100,000 years.

So, when did the bottom start to fall out? It all started unraveling after the 2008 crash. A once booming and very competitive field turned into a chaotic scramble for survival, and that’s when some very cutthroat underbidding and exploitation kicked into high gear.
The New York Times Magazine:
“Everyone he knew in the business was struggling to find work, and the bidding wars drove the profits to new lows. Sometimes, when he learned the winning bid, he was stunned — he would have lost money at that price… A job that he priced at $18,000 might be given to a company that charged only $10,000.”
But make no mistake, this wasn’t just the market self-correcting—this was the start of contractors being priced out of their own trade by people who were breaking all the rules.
So how do these sketchy companies manage to make these extremely low bids and still stay in business? Well, it’s simple: they use illegal labor, skate past payroll taxes, and call full-time workers “independent contractors” to beat the system. The NYT Magazine piece goes on:
“In 2021, the Center for American Progress estimated that 23 percent of construction workers — and 32 percent of roofers — [I’d say it’s MUCH more than that in the western US because of the greater proximity to the southern border – W] were undocumented… builders slashed costs by subcontracting out almost every facet of their projects… paying them off the books… dodging payroll taxes and workers’ comp insurance.”
It’s a really easy recipe, folks. This is what happens when you mix cheap illegal labor with no enforcement and regulators who are on the take.
The result of this downward spiral is American workers who are pushed out of the industry, quality standards that plummet, and any contractors left who are actually trying to play by the rules are left in the dust.
Until we get really serious about shutting down illegal labor, punishing crooked contractors, and cutting the red tape that is strangling the life out of small businesses, this Olympic race to the bottom will keep going. And when it finally crashes – and it will – it won’t just be tradesmen left in the rubble—it’ll be the entire country.
Hilariously, I know of a USAF SCIF whose construction was halted when it was discovered that 50% of the crew working for the contractor were illegals.

In 2018 President Trump contracted with Boeing for 2 new Air Force Ones for a fixed price of 4 billion dollars with an original delivery date of December 2024.
Boeing has pushed its delivery off until at least 2027 or 2028 or after President Trump leaves office.
Boeing is already in the red for 2.5 billion dollars. 🤔
IMO one of the justice department’s top priorities should be election integrity & investigating fraud in the last 3 elections. I believe they could gain at least 3 congress critter seats and one senator as well as making future elections better for the good guys. But the department is strangely quiet on this. WHY?

Elections are run by the states under voluntary federal guidelines. In 2020, the two worst cases of vote fraud were actually from Republican run AZ and GA. This fraud has been bipartisan and the uniparty has no desire to clean it up as both parties share in the corruption. 2026 will be a disaster as absolutely nothing has been done at this point to clean up the voter rolls in most of the swing states.

There has never been effective oversight of the NSA’s bulk collections programs, or indeed, intelligence agencies in general. There’s been a lot of noise made about this vaunted oversight in defense of programs revealed by leaked documents, but this is nothing more than a talking point.
At The Big Picture, a clip of Sen. John D. Rockefeller (then Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence) discussing how oversight actually works has been posted. It’s from an interview given in 2007, about the time the FISA Amendments Act was being put together to replace the expiring Protect America Act. The amendments act, among other things, extended the length of warrantless surveillance and gave telecoms retroactive immunity for their participation in the NSA’s bulk collections.
Here’s Sen. John D. Rockefeller explaining why, even back in 2007, intelligence agency oversight was a joke.
DAVIS: Reports quote administration officials as saying this is going on and it’s being done in a way to avoid oversight of the Intelligence Committee. Is there any way—
ROCKEFELLER: They’ll go to any lengths to do that, as we’ve seen in the last two days [during hearings on FISA].
DAVIS: Is there anything you could do in your position as Chairman of the Intelligence Committee to find answers about this, if it is in fact going on?
ROCKEFELLER: Don’t you understand the way Intelligence works? Do you think that because I’m Chairman of the Intelligence Committee that I just say I want it, and they give it to me? They control it. All of it. ALL of it. ALL THE TIME. I only get – and my committee only gets – what they WANT to give me.
