I think that making a big deal about all the SSNs going to foreigners and illegal aliens, even though it has been explained how that is a misconception, is to set us up for a deal that makes it better for Indian H1Bs, and Americans will clamor for it. thinking that we are ending fraud and abuse at SSN.
When the Indian PM was here in February I knew that he and our President talked about immigration, and I saw rumors about what was discussed but nothing concrete on the H1B topic.
Congress has made very clear in the past that immigration policy should NOT be part of trade deal negotiations. Congress, not the Executive Branch, sets immigration policy. Trade deals should not screw American workers!
If I were Modi, I would be embarrassed that all the smart people want to leave my country.
I’d be even more embarrassed to say here, use my people as cheap slaves!

At this point there needs to be a total cessation of ALL immigration of ANY kind, including “temporary” workers via visas for several decades until ALL of the illegal aliens are purged and ALL of the legal immigrants have actually ASSIMILATED.

It facilitates gifting them access to: Medicare, SSI and SS-Disability benefits, which is a massive drain on the SS and Medicare Funds
It facilitates giving them access to social welfare money and Medicaid.
[Note: The facilitation noted above would be to grant direct access as well as defend that access in Federal Courts.]
It facilitates having them counted during the census, with the objective of influencing House of Representatives Seat (and thereby Electoral College Vote) distribution.
Finally and most ominous … recall how the SSN based E-Verify system was purposely corrupted in 2008 to scuttle any and all attempt to use it as an enforcement tool vs illegal immigration. It would be just as easy to corrupt the SSN data base to create 50-75+ MILLION new citizens in 2026 or 2028. Think of all the corrupted and incorrect entries found by DOGE and Legal battle now being waged to keep DOGE OUT of the SS-Database.
If they don’t have to pay into SS when they are here working, employers get an even bigger bargain if they hire them.
It’s India demanding this.

Anybody logging into their SS-Online Account need to note there are TWO values posted by SS & Medicare taxes contributed … noting the amount of TAX paid into both funds. One value is your contributed taxes and the second is PAYROLL TAX employers pay into both funds. By law, employers are required to 100% MATCH tax payer contributions.
With the possible exception of seasonal farm visas, the reality of the situation is that foreign visa workers should cost American companies AT LEAST twice as much to employ as it does American workers and with an additional fee to the companies that is equal to 50% of the workers salary to go towards training AMERICAN CITIZENS – be that college, trades, or technical schools.
They need to get those seasonal farm worker visas straightened out too.
They’ve had decades to figure it out, after the Reagan amnesty, and still they start whining for “exceptions” when President Trump even thinks about throwing anyone but the worst criminals in the world out.
He’s been talking about kicking illegals out for ten years, but they sat on their hands. They know how disruptive it will be and it will be blamed on Trump, not them.

I downloaded five years of H-1B data from the US DOL website (4M+ records) and spent the day crunching data.
I went into this with an open mind, but, to be honest, I’m now *extremely* skeptical of how this program works.
Here’s what I found

As it turns out, these are ALL Indian companies that import H-1B tech workers en masse:

Tata Consultancy Services (60k)

Tech Mahindra
Mphasis
These aren’t American companies that needed international talent to fill critical roles. They’re foreign companies that appear to have been founded to place overseas tech workers into US companies as contractors.

I’ve spent my career in M&A and corporate finance, and I’ve been involved in a lot of budget and hiring decisions. Unless we’ve overpaid every developer and IT person at every company I’ve ever worked for, $80-120k for roles like this is NOT market (value).

You can see where I’m going with this. A casual perusal of the data shows that this isn’t a program for the top 0.1% of talent, as it’s been described. This is simply a way to recruit hundreds of thousands of relatively lower-wage IT and financial services professionals.
America needs to be a destination for the world’s most elite talent. But the H-1B program isn’t the way to do that.

For a while, Kane had problems with his daily open thread…on my computer, their daily thread does not show, anymore…first, the ability to click like or not like vanished…there were days when one could post and then that went away…so who knows? I miss their daily thread and am not fond of and therefore mostly avoid the ‘champagne room’.
I was (proudly) banned towards the beginning of the Ukraine conflict as a result of daring not to pretend and bringing copious receipts to prove my points when attacked. There were some good folks there, but Kane had (and has) many issues.

This comment not presidential, but it is family oriented so it fits. And yes, I guess the kits are probably made in China. First Saturdays in each month 9-12 “while supplies last” is Home Depot Kids Craft Workshop. If you haven’t been to take kids or grandkids it’s a super great family activity. And it’s free (sure, it’s used to get traffic in). But it’s really fun and they use hammer and screwdriver. It’s raining here in west georgia, so we are waiting a bit to go.

We homeschooled in the 90’s . Kids want to use real tools, age appropriately of course. The 3 boys Learned to desolder by 10, built skateboard ramps, etc. 1 became an el engineer & started his own business. Both me & my dh have degrees in music. Here in rural Oregon they have been changing the small town culture by building high occupancy apartments and filling them with outsiders. Local population, culture and politics are moving away from a rural mindset to a more female suburban mindset. As I travel around I see more and more of these high occupancy apartments in more and more small towns. It seems as though it’s a planned assault on conservative communities, a spreading commie cancer.
They built one somewhat near me. It has been open for a year, but still is less than half full. We told the city council and the mayor it was not needed. I look for the developer to either go broke or drastically reduce his prices more in line with the established apartment complexes (that never has had full occupancy either)
If the voters of this country put democrats back in power after O’Biden, then this country does not deserve to survive.
