Gingrich was also Speaker when Congress passed the Congressional Accountability Act, 1995. That created the Office of Compliance which handles the “slush fund” for sexual harassment payouts. Passed 98-1 in the Senate, 390-0 in the House.
Based on the final vote in favor of that Act, it was destined to pass regardless of who the Speaker was. A foregone conclusion that speaks volumes.
It was one of the “planks” for the Contract for America that Republicans campaigned on. I think Gingrich and Boehnor came up with most of that.

Good Evening Betsy. When I had my son in 1974, we decided to tighten our belt and I stayed home for three years. I had to go back to work as we could no longer make due with one salary to get our bills paid on a timely basis.
I truly believe a lot of the problems with children’s behavior is because one parent can not afford to stay home to do the parenting children so desperately need in this day and age, just to keep their heads above water. Thank you crooked government, etc.

Every member of Congress is given a well-appointed office for themselves and their staff somewhere right there in the Capitol complex. It’s either in the Capitol itself or one of the office buildings adjacent to it and connected to it by special tunnels and their own private subway.
Their offices are spacious enough that several congressmen used to sleep in their offices instead of renting an apartment in DC.
They can invite anybody they want into their office space. They can have their spouse there, a baby-sitter/nanny, wetnurse, whatever.
If a new-parent member of Congress cannot temporarily leave their child in the care of some other caregiver in the safety and comfort of their office to step away for 15 minutes to go vote… they should resign their seat.
Congress does have an on – site child care center.

NATO foolishly allowed Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia into the NATO alliance in 2004 after previously telling Russia that NATO’s borders would not move eastward. Those three countries were part of the old Soviet Union but got independence after 1991. Now we have those three tiny little countries situated right next to Russia. It is very provocative and impossible to defend.
The US, UK and other NATO countries have been rotating thousands of troops through Lithuania on a year-round series of “training exercises.” They have run these exercises scheduled more or less back to back for the past several years.
The real reason they are there is to keep thousands of fully armed NATO troops on location to deter Russia from ever attempting to breach “The Suwalki Gap.”
When the USSR broke up they allowed Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia to become independent countries. Russia retained control over a small chunk of land around the port city of Kaliningrad. It is a noncontiguous part of Russian territory on the Baltic Sea, not connected by land to the rest of Russia. Only about 40 miles of Lithuania separate Kaliningrad from Russian-aligned Belarus. That little corridor is known as “The Suwalki Gap.” It is considered to be a place where NATO-Russia conflict could break out.
Bottom line – NATO created a mess when they let those three little Baltic countries into the alliance. Now NATO has to fudge ways to defend territory it should never have agreed to defend.

Pete Buttigieg, Secretary of Transportation for Biden, took two months of paternity leave after he and his husband adopted newborn twins in 2021. He also, during this time, took fake breastfeeding lessons, if I remember correctly. The babies benefited greatly from this experience I’m certain the two months of Mother Pete being home with the babies. He wanted to do and experience the entire motherhood experience. Pedo Joe let him call in from home if and when it was necessary (it wasn’t) due to transportation problems arising like ships running into and breaking bridges, major airline crashes, major train derailments and truckers going on strikes. Actually, it was better in my opinion he stayed aways. Why not let the mothers and fathers in the legislature, taking paternity leave be able to call in for their votes?

Their job is to Represent the constituents of their district. That is more than just registering a yea or nea.

I listened to a part of the Congressional hearing on the JFK files release. I was embarrassed for the questioners. Junior high level questions asked incoherently and with uptalking. They were not aware of basic JFK investigation facts. It was all Trump this and Trump that. Trying to score political points for the democrats at his expense due to alleged unredacted social security numbers.
I am embarrassed to be an American with the state of education in this country and the state of our Congress.

You are partly right, but in this age of electronic communication, they’d hardly be isolated from influence and corruption. On the other hand, limiting their physical time in D.C. and forcing them to remain in the hustings isn’t a bad idea for a number of reasons. Something to think about in a more serious way.

I heard lots of yapping today but few solutions. If Congress wants to attack the judicial overreach problem, it could start by repealing in its entirety the Civil Service Reform Act of 1978, and replace it with a new Civil Service Reform Act for the 21st Century. It’s the original Act (Title 5 Government Organization and Employees, 5 U.S.C), along with decades of related court cases and decisions, that tie the administration’s hands and provide ammo to these judges.
Unless the original Act is replaced in its entirety, many of the accomplishments being made now through EO’s and other actions could be undone by future administrations. If we want to reform civil service and government structures permanently, new legislation is needed. But that would require Congress to show up for work and actually perform work.

– subpoena federal district court records pertaining to all cases currently involving nationwide injunctions including all internal emails/communication, including with plaintiffs to determine whether there is judicial collusion
– the number of Federal district courts needs to be legislatively reduced, thereby reducing the number of judges. 30% is probably a good target number.
– further reduce shenanigans by eliminating the practice of judge shopping and clearly rigged “random” assignments of judges
– reduce the number of appellate courts by consolidating them. Same goal: if they’re too busy hearing criminal trials they’ll have less time for politics.
– reduce the jurisdiction of the courts making some areas off limits specifically enforcement of immigration law and anything to do with national security including Commander In Chief decisions about military standards, dress and appearance, and medical fitness to serve.
Like I said, a good start. But Congress needs to bring the courts to heel. These same courts will be used in 2026 to rig the midterms. Better to deal with them now.

Regarding the limited amount of time that these Congress people actually “work”.
I saw an analysis one time (probably a link provided here at CTH).
It established that if they would consolidate the time they actually work and take fewer 3 day weekends and breaks they could be much more efficient.
They could actually get some things done. I guess that is one of the reasons for the frequent breaks. They don’t want to get anything done.
Imo, every person running for office should take an oath that their service will be short and they commit that their service will be representative of the common people of the State from which they came and NOT for moneyed special interests.

A U.S. Army sergeant from Glendale was formally identified Tuesday as one of four soldiers who died in a training accident in Lithuania.
The soldiers, who were aboard an M88 Hercules vehicle, disappeared March 25 during the training exercise in the town of Pabradé. They were found dead after a roughly weeklong search that uncovered their tactical vehicle in a swamp. Three of the bodies were recovered Monday and a fourth on Tuesday.
Three of the soldiers were identified Tuesday by the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division. Among them was Sgt. Edvin F. Franco, 25, formerly of Glendale — a husband and new father.
“Sgt. Edvin Franco’s legacy will remain with us always,” Capt. Madyson K. Wellens, diesel forward support troop commander for the 5th Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, said in a statement. “His infectious smile and genuine joy in being with his team were matched only by the tenacity and drive. He never asked more of his soldiers than he was willing to give himself — a true testament to his character. More than an exceptional leader and soldier, Edvin was a friend whose influence touched so many.”
Franco had previously been identified by his wife, Georgia, as one of the missing soldiers. The couple has a newborn son.
She told ABC22 News in Savannah, Georgia that she met her husband in 2022 after moving from Easley, South Carolina to Savannah. She said she knew something was wrong when he didn’t text her good morning, and hours later her fears were confirmed.
“They knocked on my door at 11 p.m. and told me their (soldiers’) status was unknown,” she told ABC22 News. “Since then, we’ve had crisis teams and chaplains with us. The support has been overwhelming.”
According to the Army, Franco was an M1 Abrams tank system maintainer who had been in the Army for more than six years. He did his initial training at Fort Benning, Georgia, and was assigned to the 5th Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment in February 2019. He served in Korea in 2020 and Germany in 2022.
His awards included the Army Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster, Army Achievement Medal with oak leaf cluster, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Global War on Terror Service Medal.
The other soldiers identified Tuesday were Sgt. Jose Duenez, Jr., 25, of Joliet, Illinois; and Pfc. Dante D. Taitano, 21, of Dededo, Guam.
The fourth soldier was not immediately identified.

The inferior courts are not co-equal to anything. They are directly controlled by Congress. The Supreme Court has no role in controlling the inferior courts, except when the USSC makes a judicial ruling.
