Social Security isn’t a pension. It’s old-age welfare that was sold to the public as “like a pension” by FDR (because the public never would have accepted it otherwise), and for that reason was/is funded by a very regressive tax on the lowest of workers’ wage/salary earnings, with an entitlement distributed based on a rough (but not close to accurate) pretense of being calculated on quarters of earnings contributions.

“Insurance” instead of “pension” is the newer pretense. It is exactly attitudes such as yours and those who up-voted it that this was marketed to the public as a kind of pension.
It’s not a pension, and it’s not insurance.
If it were “insurance”, wealthy individuals who don’t need it wouldn’t be getting it, but they do to further the pretense that it’s a sort of pension.
But if it were a pension, widows who were employed outside the home and “paid in” their entire lives wouldn’t get only the same benefit as never-employed widows of comparably-earning men, thereby “losing” their entire contribution.
Many other examples. But what do I know, I’m just a tax lawyer.

You paid taxes. Consider the person who works only five years and thus is not entitled to social security. “Contributions” all lost. (Unlike employee contributions to unvested employer pension plan or 401K that are always vested.) So he paid taxes and you didn’t? Where did HIS contributions go?
‘Insurance” is a completely different concept. It is a group pooling of risk. What “risk” is social security “insuring” against? It’s not insurance. Millionares collect it.
It’s old-age/disability welfare calculated in a fake (and unfair) way that when first enacted was designed with a payout scheme that encompassee a moral component for long-time workers so that they would believe that they had “contributed to a pension”, so that the people who would have been outraged at the regressive tax scheme and highly offended at the thought of receiving a government entitlement let it be enacted in to law.
And the propaganda has worked.

Your taxes go into the general revenue where they are used to pay, among other things, for current Social Security old-age and disability welfare. You pay double being self-employed because you also have to pay the employer’s portion.
The tax scheme was set up to fool people into thinking it was the equivalent of a pension. But it’s not. And until people face this reality, they won’t understand why ostensible calculation “fixes” such as proposed by Mr. Kitting, above, can’t and won’t happen.

Speaking for myself as a baby boomer, I was told early on that all the SS money was going to “dry up” long before I ever saw any of it, and that I was working only to pay SS to those who’d been promised it before I came along. Even back then I thought, ‘Whatevs,’ and went on working and paying SS, trusting that God would provide for me my whole life, no matter who pretended to be my benefactor.
The lying media was hammering it home to us in the 1980s, showing us how all the old people on SS didn’t have enough money to live on and were only able to afford buying dog and cat food to eat. I clearly remember seeing them show one old lady eating cat food from a can. Looking back I see that as a total scam, but learned from it that they were telling me I’m not going to get anything from all the money they took from me.
But, here I am, retired and getting some of the SS money they took from me over many decades. Do I depend on it to survive? Nope. I depend on God, and He never fails.
Get a life! I paid to SS for 65 years. We deserve better.

76….I received my SS card in 1958….working on our almond farm. Not by choice….
When I went into real estate in mid life I was advised to learn about compound interest and that SS retirement would never be enough to take care of me. I believe i was told at the time the rate of return on SS was about 1 or 2%. I was also advised to read the book the Art of the Deal and learn how to get a rate of return on money invested well about SS in real estate investments. Thank God i listened. Mission accomplished.

I began working at age 14 and put in SS from that age and my whole working career. I am now 74 almost 75 and paid into it until I retired at 65. I think I and any body else that paid into it their entire working life deserves to get it. If it weren’t for the uniparty taking from it, (they said they would never touch it), for their “pet” projects, etc., we would have enough to last.

Every employer took SS tax from me. Private sector took it, and when I worked for the Federal Government they took it, too.
It was not called a “general revenue” fund, it was called Social Security and we all knew it as a fund, a pool of money that the government would use to invest and grow, and then give back to the people who put in once they retired. At least that’s what we were all told.
You called it welfare. It is not. Do you still call it welfare, knowing people paid into it? Or was that just your way of causing a stir? Was the stir just to get people to think differently? And if so, why don’t you just speak plainly and tell us what it is you think we should do that would actually help?

We will never be able to fix the problems with the scheme, which worked somewhat better in the earliest days, when mostly only men were employed outside the home, when divorce was much rarer, when feature creep didn’t creep in, etc. until people stop looking at it as contributions to “their” pension.
Just answer me this: do you think it’s fair that married women who were employed their entire adult lives and become widowed basically LOSE their “contributions”, and women who may have never worked but were married to men who made similar incomes to the former’s husbands, even if they married him two days before he died, get the same amount?

I have no problem with people in need getting welfare.
Whatever reason the SS line was put wherever it was on my pay stubs makes no difference to me. But the fact remains that “they” made sure to mark that money was specifically being taken out of my pay for SS, no matter the fund, or pool, or whatever part of my earned income it was being taken or used from.
None of that matters to me.
But it is not welfare. That part I will never agree with.
Is the system fair and just all the time? Absolutely not. Nothing on this hard rock is ever fair and just all the time.
It is really sad realizing that many people worked believing that SS was their retirement pension, only to see them truly struggle now. Were they duped? Did they believe SS would actually be their pension? I don’t know, but like I said, I think we were all forewarned through most of our working days that we would get zero, zip, nada of what we’d paid in. So for me to get SS, I’m thanking God, since He is, indeed, the giver of all good gifts.
Why would a married women who was employed her entire life lose her contribution to SS once she’s widowed? Why would that happen? Do you mean she’d lose her husband’s SS and only be allowed to keep her own? Or keep her husband’s and lose her SS? Why would she be allowed to keep both payments if her husband dies?
And why should a woman who never worked get her husband’s SS, even if they’d only just gotten married? Why not? Whether he got any of it or not, he was his wife’s means of support in life, and now will be in death.
Are you asking if the laws used to disperse SS are crazy? Wrong? Unfair? I’m sure they are all of those.
Here’s an example for you —
I have a sister who lost her hearing when she was 10 years old. She is very intelligent, but extremely undriven. I won’t say she’s lazy, since she has many activities she likes to do and people she likes to share activities with.
Because she is deaf she was offered free college tuition, and never took advantage of it; she was only interested in becoming a mom and grandmom.
Her first and second husband’s supported her and their children while married, and then each gave their own percentage when divorced, but only as long as the children were still at home. Once the kids were grown and out of the house she was on her own.
She is deaf, horrifically morbidly obese, and has worked at a job outside her home for 5 days total in her entire life.
34 years ago my dad died of cancer when he was 63. My mom committed suicide 40 days later on her 59th birthday. Neither of my parents had taken a penny from either of their SS “accounts.”
Somehow, and in a way that no one is able to understand (but maybe you will and can explain it to me), my sister was put onto my dad’s SS, that he had last paid into 38 years ago.
She never worked, wasn’t married to the man whose SS it was, and will live out her days being provided for. God’s merciful intervention, for absolute, but makes absolutely no sense here on earth — and the goofy laws and codes that we must live with.
My biggest question to you though is still this — what it is you think we should do that would actually help?

Throughout my working life I was provided annual estimates of my benefit. What I get is what they promised.
Makes no sense to me that my government benefit should suddenly be tripled. Especially in light of the fact that we are $36 trillion in debt!

I agree that sunlight is critical in this case. Judges would be a much smaller subset of all lawyers and usually not elected, so the idea that such an organization exists just stinks to high heaven.

I have to believe the happiest people in the DC Swamp these days are the Congressional republicans. They get to sit-back and watch Team Trump be more and more consumed with DC Court injunctions and rulings that fully sidetrack the administration from pushing them on real laws and legislation. A few of the assigned party hacks are out calling for impeachment and holding hearings, none of which will be successful or meaningful. The House’s Department of Government Efficiency panel, led by GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, is asking the Justice Department to investigate Tesla vehicles being vandalized and destroyed since EV car company’s owner, Elon Musk, became a White House appointee.
“These attacks, which seem to involve,” the DOGE subcommittee wrote in a letter Wednesday to Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel.
Greene asked whether non-governmental organizations were involved in the attack.
“If NGOs are linked to these attacks, has federal funding been provided to any of them?” the letter reads. “The American public deserves transparency and assurance that their tax dollars are not being used to fund domestic political terrorism.”

Aggiegirl, it breaks my heart to see what has happened to the Navy and ships my father loved so much, as a sailor, for almost 30 years. As a young girl, I remember seeing the first nuclear powered aircraft carrier, the USS Enterprise commissioned. Dad was a plank crew member on that carrier and the USS Forrestal, The USS Saratoga and a “senior moment” so can’t remember the other carrier. I remember getting a tour of the Enterprise and was in awe at it’s size. In his March 4 address to Congress, President Trump proclaimed that he had “terminated the ridiculous Green New Scam,” referring to assorted Biden-era Green New Deal policies directed at an “energy transition.” The weekend before, the Wall Street Journal featured a lengthy essay with a title seemingly calibrated to pre-bunk Trump’s expected remarks: “The Clean Energy Revolution Is Unstoppable.” The authors, two Oxford professors, asserted that the “clean energy revolution is being driven by fundamental technological and economic forces that are too strong to stop,” and that “large segments of fossil fuel demand will permanently disappear . . . in the next two decades.” Two weeks later, the Wall Street Journal featured another op-ed, this one coauthored by former vice president Al Gore, proclaiming the “energy transition is inevitable.”
So, which is it? Inevitable or a “scam?”
We find a useful referee in this war of words with the recently released Eye on the Market 15th Annual Energy Paper by Michael Cembalest, J. P. Morgan’s chairman of market and investment strategy. As this 70-slide, deep-dive report pointedly notes, “after $9 trillion globally over the last decade spent on wind, solar, electric vehicles, energy storage, electrified heat and power grids, the renewable transition is still a linear one; the renewable share of final energy consumption is slowly advancing at 0.3%–0.6% per year [emphasis added].” One does not need a mathematics degree to understand that such anemic growth rates are not the hallmarks of an “unstoppable” juggernaut. Hence, Cembalest’s bottom line: “Growth in fossil fuel consumption is slowing but no clear sign of a peak on a global basis.” That is to say, no “energy transition” is in sight.
Look at the numbers. Those harsh, immutable numbers. Notice that they compare like-to-like; final energy consumption, at the user level. This means the electricity that you use to power your home’s lights, to run your appliances; it means the gas that goes in your car, and so forth. Energy, then, at the consumer level. The rates of that energy – of which, we note, that only electricity can come from renewable (solar, wind, etc.) sources – that are delivered by those renewables are scarcely budging. At the rate of 0.3 to 0.6 percent per year, we are talking decades – maybe centuries – to realize any appreciable rate of increase.
First, renewable sources, like solar and wind, are, for the most part, fairly new installations, as such things go. As these systems age, and as their maintenance requirements increase, and as they begin to fail, the economic equations will change. They may change dramatically. We are already seeing problems, like the storage of worn-out windmill blades, and solar power farms hit by hail.
Second, economics is, like the math on which it depends, a harsh mistress. The energy produced by renewables and the systems that produce them are only tenable in the market when they are subsidized; in other words, they are not tenable in a free marketplace. The Trump administration, we should note, is working to move us closer to a free marketplace in energy.
As with so many things related to this issue, the math just doesn’t support the claims of the scolds. And the math, as these systems age and require replacement, may turn less to the favor of the climate scolds’ preferences over time.
