The French government didn’t pay for the Statue of Liberty. It was NOT given to America by the French government.
It was privately designed and privately financed, mostly but not entirely by ordinary French citizens. Descendants of the French military officers who helped fight in our revolutionary war donated including the family of Lafayette.
The huge pedestal on which the statue stands was funded by American private donations. Newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer helped raise funds. “Schoolchildren across America began donating pennies. For instance, a kindergarten class in Iowa sent $1.35 to Pulitzer’s fund drive.”
The famous poem on a plaque at the base of the pedestal – “Give us your tired, your poor…” was not part of the original project but was added later. That poem is by American socialist and activist Emma Lazarus, and was written to help raise funds for the pedestal.
