My aunt told me she was always happy to pick cotton because that was the only way she could make a little money right up through high school.
My mother picked cotton too. She said that picking was not too bad. Chopping cotton was the part she didn’t like.
My grandpa grew cotton & his six kids picked it with the help of friend and fellow cotton farmer (land owner) Mr. King, who was black and had a large family. Two farm families that grew up helping each other before desegregation. As a teen mom worked at the cinema in town. Her black friends came in and she was glad to see them because they went to different high schools . She sat with them in the balcony. Owner did not like it – kept asking her why she had so many black friends. She thought that was weird. Mr. Kings grandson and I talked for an hour on the phone last month about cattle & grass & invasive berries& leasing land to each other.
