“Republic Airways Flight 4514 was forced to abort its first landing attempt at the airport on Tuesday after Air Traffic Control warned that a helicopter was in its vicinity. The Embraer E-175 executed a go-around maneuver, and safely landed a few minutes later, CNN reported.
“There’s a helicopter over Georgetown northbound 300 feet,” the air traffic controller told the plane, according to audio from LiveATC.net.
The pilot confirmed the warning and was told to go around the helicopter and try to land again, which it did. The plane landed safely at 8:11 p.m.”

This was a wake up call. It was reported that one person was handling helicopters and planes, when normally there is a person for each separately.
BTW, by this I mean the crash on Wednesday night.

Perhaps. But there should always be two people manning the tower which means that they need 3 people there. Can you imagine only having ONE PERSON working a tower in one of the busiest airports in the country?

A supervisor authorized the second controller to leave early, for some reason, leaving only one.
Considering they had barely averted a crash the night before, why would that seem okay?

There could have been 100 controllers, but it still gets down to the pilot in command. Bottom-line is he screwed up big-time. There is an admirative flaw having to do with an approved flight path crossing the approach ends of a runway. This is a blatant dumbism.

President Trump, as a NYC billionaire, has more experience with helicopters that the average lay person.
And large airplanes as well! He understands both very well!!!

My question is did the air traffic controllers know the altitude of the helicopter? Can they tell from their equipment? Just wondering? If so why didn’t they communicate to the helicopter to get to the 200 feet level in that restricted area. The 300 feet level came a good distance after the collision location.
You would think, but idk. They could have asked what their altitude was– prior to crossing the known runway path.
Although I would think the ultimate responsibility to stay under “200 feet” rule, is that of the helo pilot. The plane being much larger & landing should have the right-of-way.
Controllers generally won’t say anything unless the altitude is more than 300′ off.

And why was the helicopter 1/2 mile off course?
My Big question is; are navigation/altimeter readings hackable? Who has access to the back door? Did they believe they were below the ceiling due to a faulty altimeter reading?
I’m of the belief everything is hackable! Not being a pilot, idk if one would have a good visual sense to tell the distance to the ground.
I heard early on they were closer to 400 feet altitude- you’d think twice the height would be noticeable though.
Tough to visually judge how high up you are at night over water.
Blackhawks have terrain following radar that can control altitude within a few feet.

It has been stated (regulations) that helicopters are to fly at 200 foot altitude when near the airport so that they fly underneath the airplanes landing and taking off.
The pilot of the helicopter got down to 200 feet and then started climbing. At the same time, the airplane was descending. When they both got to around 300 feet, they collided.

Definitely a lot of things not right in this story!
The helo was clearly too high and was reportedly 1/2 mile off course, which is a huge distance in that small of an air space.
The ATC was clearly doing too much at one time and did not give specific instructions to the BH as to exactly WHERE the incoming plane was and where it was heading!
The fact that the identity of the last person onboard the military chopper has not been released is concerning but may not mean anything other than all of their next of kin have not been notified yet, but it is leading to a lot of speculation, which may or may not be warranted!
So many questions – but it all comes down to one inescapable fact. This accident should have never happened and it must be fully investigated, without any subjects being off-limits, in order to ensure that our airports, and indeed, the entire aviation industry, be fully staffed, with only the most qualified people. PERIOD!
The pilot in command has been identified as a woman with 500 hours flight time. The actual name and identity has not yet been announced.
I doubt she was PC with a Standardization pilot on board.

It was 1913 before women could vote. Anyway, I came across this paragraph on election fraud strangely parallel to 2020 (and probably manh others before and since). And, naturally, it was democrats conducting the fraud.

Excellent update!!! It appears to be mostly human error as the cause except for the mechanical problem of the airplane and helicopter being on different frequencies in that restricted area. The main cause to me was the helicopter flying above the 200 feet level for that restrict area since the crash was at the 300 feet level. Prayers for the families that lost loved ones!!! JMO

Funding for public television comes from the government (at all levels) and the private sector in roughly equal amounts. Approximately 75% of the CPB’s funding goes to public television, while 25% goes to public radio. About 70% of funding for local NPR stations comes from government sources.

Based on a determination of the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter’s last location before colliding with American Airlines 5342 from Wichita, the Army chopper was flying above its authorized flight path, according to anonymous sources who spoke to the New York Times. The American CRJ300 stopped transmitting tracking data at 375 feet — suggesting impact occurred far above the 200-foot ceiling imposed on helicopters in that area.
The Black Hawk was reportedly under the command of a female pilot with more than 500 hours of flight time. The male instructor pilot had more than 1,000 hours, while the crew chief is also said to have logged hundreds of hours. Given the shorter duration of helicopter flights, those hours are substantial, according to Jonathan Koziol, a retired Army chopper pilot who’s assigned to the Unified Command Post that’s been organized to coordinate the post-disaster efforts at the airport.
The Army has not released the names of the crew members, but the names of the two males aboard the Black Hawk have emerged via other channels: Staff Sgt. Ryan O’Hara and Chief Warrant Officer 2 Andrew Eaves. All were assigned to Bravo Company, 12th Combat Aviation Battalion, headquartered at nearby Fort Belvoir. While there are many social media posts purporting to identify the female pilot as a male-to-female trans National Guard member who on Tuesday publicized his transition, ZeroHedge cannot find authoritative confirmation of those claims as this article is being written. On Monday, President Trump issued an executive order barring transgender people from openly serving in the military.

Exclusive dash-cam video obtained by The Washington Post shows a previously unseen angle of the moment a plane and helicopter collided over the Potomac River on Wednesday night.
The helo was lower and behind the cockpit.
Pretty easy why the CRJ didn’t see helo. Also, it was the RESPONSIBILITY of the helo to avoid the CRJ, period.
The CRJ was on a perfect path for landing on runway 33: the CRJ was exactly where it was suppose to be and the Helo was above its ceiling.
Everybody in that helicopter was jabbed; guaranteed.
This is why PDJT, imho, would be well advised to wait for further evaluation before making his hard and fast assertions. Why he feels the need to weigh in at this point, beyond his initial statements of condolence, isn’t clear. Confirmation bias? (It has to be DEI.)
It really seems to be shaping up to be heli pilot error (being focused on another, larger plane and not the smaller one they ultimately hit). If this does in fact turn out to be the official conclusion, the Dems will seize upon the issue like a yapping dog.
I am sure PDJT has more current info than we do.
I am willing to bet there were/are DEI hires in the control tower, in the helicopter and in the AA flight. DEI kills people, and the dems can yap all they like — they will lose the argument.

Problems with DEI hires don’t have to be a pilot or someone in charge. For example, people who schedule shifts are important in making things run well, as are the people who train air traffic controllers, for example.
You wondered why President Trump would call out DEI. Besides President Trump being a logical and common sense person and having more information than we do, one reason is at least up to half the country doesn’t see the problems with DEI. President Trump is a genius at bringing problems to light and helping more and more people see what’s really going on.

A transgender Black Hawk pilot has been wrongly named as one of the three US Army personnel flying the helicopter that collided with a plane in Washington DC.
Jo Ellis, 34, was misidentified as the female co-pilot of the doomed chopper on Thursday.
A shaken-sounding Ellis picked up the phone when called by DailyMail.com Friday morning, confirming that she was not killed.
Ellis added: ‘I am very much alive.’
She said the false rumors had ‘shocked,’ her with the Pentagon said to be preparing a statement in a bid to debunk the online lies.
Ellis, who previously worked for CNN star Michael Smerconish, said the slurs are ‘disrespectful to the families’ of the 67 people killed in Wednesday night’s disaster.
On Friday, it emerged the co-pilot of the US Army Black Hawk Sikorsky UH-60 was female service member on a training sortie.
She has not been identified.

When president Trump insisted that the personnel being employed in the control towers have to be psychologically tested to be adept at their jobs, he was so right. That applies to pilots also. When the Florida flight 90 crashed into the Potomic river several years ago, Psychology Today magazine wrote an article about the discussion between the 2 pilots just before take-off. I still have the article because I have saved it for years. The co-pilot questioned the pilot about how heavy the plane felt but the pilot discounted it and did not listen to what the co-pilot was sensing. They had been waiting for some time to take off and the pilot was anxious to take off. He just did not listen to the alarm coming from the co pilot. Fatal flaw!
When the book Better Faster Smarter came out, it had an example in it of a pilot who always included the flight crew in all of his pre -flight brainstorms about what they would do in various scenarios of flight emergencies.
Psychologically that pilot was at the top of his game. Not ONE pilot since that time has been able on flight simulator to recreate how he and his crew saved that jet from crashing and landed the plane without one casualty. It’s amazing!!

Just to clarify, it was the extra ice on the wings. The co-pilot sensed the ice had built up even though the pilot did not think to check it. The plane had been sitting there too long AFTER it had been de-iced. One simple cautious decision about another de-icing might have changed what happened.
Hard to tell what is going on. Military pilots receive recurring aircrew coordination training and well designed emergency procedure training. Civil aviation has a heavy percentage of ex-military pilots.
In a flight emergency, one first has to understand the indicators (which can be direct, say a cockpit fire or a stall, or driven by warning lights) and quickly apply memorized mandatory procedures. These procedures are cultivated from systems knowledge and mishap histories. It’s not a challenge where one has to understand and ponder the options; one has to reduce the variables very quickly at 450 knots or 300 feet AGL. At the same time, there is no room for fear or indecision.
Like all professions, there is a spread from top of the pyramid aviators down to the “passes minimums” types. Grooming a pilot is an expensive investment. Once in place, there is a built in barrier to letting such people go.
As for ATC/Tower controllers, these people have to understand aviation obviously, but they have a different challenge. When I went through COMPSCI “advanced education” there was a common aphorism that the human mind could multitask five plus or minus two events at a time. I don’t know what the magic number is for controllers and am dated on how computers aid the controllers in performing their tasks.
The pucker factor always goes up during night ops. I caught a helo pilot who has flown in the Potomac corridor on TV the other day and she mentioned that these tightly interspersed helo/commercial jets on final traffic management patterns had become routine to the extent that it is likely many aviators experienced a reduced sense of risk. That is a a psychological claim. I don’t know if it is true. I saw it at times in older, very experienced military aviators. Nevertheless, flying at three hundred feet in congested airspace has a way of invigorating embedded survival instincts!
Again, I think this will turn out after investigation finding fault with both the helo crew and ATC. The whole matter has already been politicized. Audio records will be useful. It is possible, for example, that aircrew was distracted inside the cockpit. I think the probability in that context is limited, but yiou just don’t know until there is a full investigation.

Congress shoulders a lot of blame for the dangers of air traffic in and around Reagan National Airport.
Air safety professionals have warned the overwhelming air traffic congestion at the airport is a major air safety problem. They have called for FAR FEWER daily flights into and out of the airport.
Congress has, instead, demanded MORE flights which are CONVENIENT for members of the House and Senate to quickly depart and arrive at the airport.
Legislators are quick to cry “trust the science” but they are completely against professional advice when it comes to air safety at Reagan National Airport.
I grew up in the DMV area when Reagan AP was titled National Airport. The traffic today is nothing like it was in the 60s. You could sit in a coffee shop with a view to the runway and see upwards of 30/40 or more aircraft all taxing to a hold position awaiting clearance for take-off: for hours on end.
It could be that traffic is still too heavy.
Night ops obviously have different rules for separation on approach (it’s time based). The “crazy” factor here is the incessant helo traffic orthogonal to the approach patterns. There are airspace regs/controls delimited by distance and altitude from an AP vis who has control and clearance to fly through or over the volume of space encompassing that control area. These are there to promote safety for aviators and local population (as well as restricted areas).
Guaranteed NTSB will find some issues with ATC. They almost always do. at the end of the day, this one also points a finger at the helo crew (IMO). We will find out in time.
He’s not on Brandon’s pardon list and, if evaluated using the same standards as a police shooting, I am sure the judgement would be that there was ZERO cause for the use of deadly force. Regarding the helicopter/plane crash. Now, I’m not saying the US military helicopter was not at fault (at least in the flying aspect) and possibly also the tower (FAA), both government (executive level) organizations. It seems the private plane was the innocent in all of this.
So, my concern. When it comes to the inevitable lawsuits…..I would bet Trumps own words, video, and truth social texts will be plaintiff exhibits A, B, C, D, E,….Z. He isn’t exactly helping the defense side of the lawsuits. And probably this is a pretty easy case to litigate, but it still doesn’t help.
President Trump spoke the truth when he posted the helicopter was flying too high in that restricted area. The helicopter was at 300 feet and should have been at the 200 feet restricted level. See sync’s video posted above. He isn’t trying to help either side just getting out the truth! JMO
…. And the crash was at ~375 feet based on the transponder data from the plane. So the copter hit the plane at approximately 175 feet above the assigned altitude. That’s about 88% higher than the assigned altitude.
There could be other contributing factors. For example: If the tower had been properly staffed, perhaps the controller would have given more detailed instructions about the plane’s location, and more specific instructions to the copter to avoid the plane.
The President may know a whole lot more than we do. I’d be quite surprised if he did not.
Pete Hegseth stated that the helicopter pilot was wearing night vision goggles, seemingly to suggest that was a good thing. On Megyn Kelly’s podcast, she interviewed an MIT aeronautical professor and a former top gun pilot who agreed with him that if night goggles were being worn, that could interfere with the pilot’s depth perception when flying over a brightly lit city.
The pilot (not the male instructor pilot already identified) was flying at twice the permitted height ceiling, on a direct collision course with a passenger airliner, on final approach (decelerating). And it did so in a straight course path, for well over five seconds.
And we are now over 36 hours post crash, and that female pilot has yet to be identified.
I suggest the night goggles are a canard issue.

In daily reading the Federal Register have noticed over the past few days in looking at various agencies I usually ignore since they have nothing to do with my interests, noticed that in many of these agencies regarding rules and regulations that the various agencies were rapidly, rabidly, putting into place during the last weeks of FJB’s administration that the current agencies are simply extending the comment period for all of those newly proposed rules and regulations.
Not simply stopping them – which could have given rise to lawsuits by those benefiting from such new rules and regs (the activist communities) – by simply extending the comment period this allows for actual scrutiny with newly received comments by those affected by such things.

He clearly states there will be a fairness and balance in ALL deals …. that means if a nation has a command economy (China Inc.), uses its legal system and regulations to the detriment of the US (EU, India and others), etc. … there will be like response from the US until a fair balance is struck. This is a departure from the “free market” BS spewed as the norm..that always leaves the US with a “bad deal”. There is no free market as EVERY nation seeks to dominate for some reason…reasons good and bad…that is why he uses the term “fair market”.
So…in the case of the 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico … They are acting as agents and conduits for China Inc. and the Open Borders desires of the Global Financial Masters of DAVOS and BIS in Switzerland. They are being used as transit points for increasing flows of illegals, increasing flows human trafficking as well as transit points for foreign goods under the resurrected terms of NAFTA put in place by JoeBama’s regime.
The BS of Canada Producing fentanyl domestically for their own consumption is missing a key fact … Canada is a primary knock off production spot for Big Pharma “generics” and China inc., Canadian “generic” product is being trafficked across US Borders freely because of an abused TRUST that has our very long border with Canada UNGUARDED….and our long border with Mexico openly controlled by the Cartels. Some of the pro-Canadian posters here seem to think drug runners and human traffickers report their stats to both governments…so no reports by the traffickers means no illegal traffic.
History is nice as reference and even serves to provide some rationale … it ‘s time to face reality and that the US for at least the next 4-years will have a Chief Executive and Sometimes a Legislative Branch as well as Judicial Branch doing work they promised which got them elected … focus on the well being inside our own “secure” borders.

There seems to be agreement that the control tower was understaffed during the horrible January 29 crash in DC.
Several years ago, I read an article stating that the DEI staffing mandate had reduced the number of people qualified to apply for FAA jobs, reducing the intake of new controllers and staffing levels.
I remember the article seemed both alarming and solid. But I can’t remember where I saw it and haven’t been able to locate it.

Common Sense and Logic has been lacking in DC for decades. Allowing helicopters to fly in and around commercial airliners is ripe for disaster. What we witnessed the other night should have Never Been Allowed to happen.

These flights should not be allowed, and the special flight rules for Washington should have been changed years ago. Unless it is really an actual emergency situation, no helicopter flights should be allowed along the Potomac River anywhere in the vicinity of DCA by anyone, military or otherwise.

Somewhere I read that the helicopter didn’t respond to three different comments from Fort Belvoir to “return to base,” though I can’t find it at the moment.

It has also emerged that the Army helicopter, which was carrying three soldiers, involved in the collision might have also deviated from its approved flight path.
The outlet again spoke with insiders that said the Sikorsky H-60 Black Hawk helicopter was not on its approved route and flying higher than it should have been.
Approval had been given for the helicopter to fly no higher than 200 feet along the east side of the Potomac River, where it would have avoided the passenger jet.
The pilot of the helicopter confirmed sight of the American Airlines flight and was told to stick to their predetermined route and go behind the plane.
Sources said the pilot did not stick to the path however and was a half-mile off course as well as being at an altitude above 300 feet.
A senior Army official told The Times that the pilot of the Black Hawk had flown the route before and was well aware of the tight altitude restrictions and routes.

Yes, I commented yesterday about the base calling that chopper with orders 3 times, none of which the chopper responded to.
there is audio recording of the base air traffic controller making those requests, it first appeared ( to my knowledge) on the Stinchfield show yesterday . I think just below my comment yesterday somebody posted that audio in question
They want air traffic to go over the Potomac instead of over the rich peoples’ homes in DC. “Airport noise”, “unsafe over houses”, etc.
I can see them prohibiting helicopters at night.

I’ld like better info on where the AA flight was on its glidepath relative to ground track to the runway threshold. 200 feet AGL is pretty close to the threshold in terms of descent rate (i.e., time).
