Avocado Propagation 101 for Interested Treehousers, Specifically Libetybella
Select fruits from produce stand or grocery. Buy several.
You are looking for a seed that is round and not oval. Haas phenotype seeds are oval and small.
They really only like to grow in California. I search for hybrids of Hass/Guatemalan/Mexican which can handle Florida heat and occasional cold snaps.
I take a Bounty brand paper towel and fold the rinsed seed into it. I soak the paper towel packet with rain water or well water and stick it into a Ziplock gallon freezer bag and set it in a dedicated drawer.
Wait 2 weeks. Plant the start into a large container with Fox Farm Coco Loco growing medium and water with fish emulsion fertilizer.
When the sapling is the diameter of your finger, find someone in your area with producing trees of the same sort of genetics (easy for me as I am “juiced in” with the Florida gardening subculture) identify a producing branch the same caliper as your rootstock. Trim the producing branch with sterilized snips or a scalpel, wrap it in a wet paper towel.
Graft your cutting onto the rootstock
With a notch cut after a slight dip into rooting hormone gel. Wrap a Band aid or two around the wound.

I have often wondered why churches ever close. They should be at the ready and their buildings in use 24/7. In my Christian opinion. At a moment’s notice, an elder or Pastor of the congregation should be at the ready to pray with or aid anyone who walks through their doors and who is not actively involved in criminal activity. Just a word of warning. Winter cold for you Texans may not be done. The Feb 8-10 it looking like a pattern where much colder than normal air will be flowing down into the state and west Texas gets more snow.
A Winter’s Tale
I have lived through winters in a number of different places. Each has its own ‘personality’. Detroit, nestled among the Great Lakes, was my first. Because the city is built over a salt mine, salt is the melter of choice for city streets. As a consequence, the snow didn’t melt, we beat it to death with traffic.
My move to Colorado was a winter revelation. The snow didn’t melt, it sublimated. You could see the steam rising into the air, to move East, mayhaps to snow in Kansas. The other delightful shock – the wind is warm. The downslope winds on the front range are called Chinooks.
Another memorable move took us to the Upper Penninsula of Michigan. Folks there warned us – it usually didn’t snow a lot at one time, but IT DIDN’T MELT! Sure enough, by spring, when we were ready for flowers to bloom, snow was still piled high.
Today I was doing compare and contrast. Winter on the East side of Idaho’s smile (a smile on the map created by the Snake River), is like none of the others. The climate is fairly dry, but not like Colorado. Snowfall tends to be light, but needs to be ‘tamed’ with anti ice / ice melters. The wind, when it blows down the valley is (brrr) cold. So, while the sky this morning is a cloudless beautiful blue, you can tell by a distant vista that there is a misty fog in the air. I laugh because the temp is reported at 4 degrees with a gust to 4 – giving a ‘feels like’ temp of 8. I’m not sure how they arrive at that, but I’ll not complain.

A HUGE part of the population here is illegal. Where I live in Tulare County I would bet that over half of the county population is illegal.
Back in o8 during the crash, when all the jobs disappeared it was like night and day. Within a short period of time there were almost no more hispanic folks. No more loud blaring mexican music. No more massive crime. No more spanish being spoken.
Americans appeared out of nowhere it seemed. Restuarants where all you heard was English and the restaurants were full again. (Like me, many folks just don’t go out to spend money when you feel like you’re in a foreign country and treated poorly).
That’s when I fully realized how MANY illegal aliens there were here. And they can be extremely rude. Gang members everywhere with their gang signs in graffiti everywhere.
Most of the radio stations are in spanish. Very few are in English. For all practical purposes this is not America.
In Porterville there is one Target store and one Walmart. Everyone who speaks English pretty much shops in Target. Everyone who speaks Spanish shops at Walmart.
The Target store is clean and nice. The Walmart is trashy and dirty. In Target the shoppers are polite. In Walmart the shoppers tend to be rude if you’re not hispanic.
If you don’t speak Spanish it is almost impossible to get a job here. American kids who grow up here almost always leave after high school because of the lack of job opportunities.
Everyone who speaks English pretty much shops in Target. Everyone who speaks Spanish shops at Walmart

Evening Prayer For Forgiveness
Heavenly Father, thank You for bringing me through this day and Lord, forgive me for the times when I have wandered outside Your best will for me, instead of trusting You implicitly.
Thank You, that You are such a gracious Shepherd to me and that You come and rescue me even when I lose my way and stray from the path that You have laid out for me.
As I look back over today, I know Lord that there were things that I should have said and done differently, and times when I reacted in a manner that was not honouring Your holy name. Forgive me I pray, but thank You, Father, that You always faithfully prepared to gently bring me back to Yourself.
Give me a good night’s sleep I pray, knowing that there is no condemnation because I am in Christ, and may I wake up in the morning refreshed and ready to do Your will. In Jesus’ name I pray,

Sunday Thoughts: Waiting on the Lord

I think we can all agree that waiting isn’t fun. I remember a teacher in high school saying that she thought one feature of Hell was waiting in line for eternity. Tom Petty said that “the waiting is the hardest part,” and I’m inclined to agree.
But did you know that God calls believers to wait on Him? King David wrote in Psalm 27:13-14 , “I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living! Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD!”
In this psalm, David wrote about contending with “evildoers,” “adversaries,” “foes,” and “enemies,” but he also expressed his trust in the Lord to take care of him:
