During an earlier press conference, the police were not 100% certain of the identity of the driver of the Tesla Cybertruck that exploded in front of Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas and were awaiting DNA verification.
The police have now confirmed the identity as Matthew Livelsberger, 37, an active-duty Army soldier who was based in Germany and home in the USA on leave.

The FBI said it had so far found no definitive link between the New Year’s Day New Orleans truck attack that killed 15 people and the Cybertruck explosion in Las Vegas later on the same day, which left seven people with minor injuries.
The Cybertruck driver was identified as Matthew Livelsberger, 37, an active-duty Army soldier from Colorado Springs, and police said he acted alone.
Livelsberger killed himself with a gunshot to the mouth, police said, citing a report from the Clark County Coroner/Medical Examiner, according to a post on X by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
Livelsberger was inside the vehicle when gasoline canisters and large firework mortars in the truck bed exploded, police said.
Police previously had told a press conference they believed the person found in the truck was Livelsberger, but because the body was burned beyond recognition, investigators were awaiting confirmation from DNA evidence and medical records.
Livelsberger shot himself just before explosives in the vehicle were detonated, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Sheriff Kevin McMahill told reporters. A handgun was found at his feet.
It was one of two semi-automatic handguns found in the Cybertruck, both of which were lawfully purchased by Livelsberger on Dec. 30. Law enforcement also found military identification, a passport, an iPhone and credit cards in the truck.
Livelsberger was assigned to the Army Special Operations Command and was on approved leave at the time of his death, an Army official said. The Army Special Operations Command would not comment on an ongoing investigation, a spokesperson said.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk was a key backer of Trump in his 2024 presidential campaign and is also an adviser to the incoming president.
“It’s not lost on us that it’s in front of the Trump building, that it’s a Tesla vehicle, but we don’t have information at this point that definitively tells us or suggests it was because of this particular ideology, or… any of the reasoning behind it,” McMahill, of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, said.
Police said Livelsberger rented the Cybertruck in Denver on Dec. 28 and made stops in several cities, including Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Flagstaff, Arizona, before arriving in Las Vegas early on Wednesday.
The truck drove along the city’s hotel- and casino-lined Strip, drove through the Trump hotel’s driveway and later returned to the valet area. The Trump hotel was evacuated and most guests were moved to another hotel following the explosion.
Both the Cybertruck and the vehicle used in the New Orleans attack were rented through car-sharing service Turo, McMahill said. (more)

The weakness of the explosion was more interesting. The energy of the explosion went directly upwards, not damaging the building despite the truck being parked in a few feet of the doors and all the glass around where the vehicle was found. The vehicle itself is still identifiable as a motor vehicle and was mostly intact according to the photos. Looks more like an incendiary device, resulting in the fire causing the interior damage.
The fire may have been designed to only burn up some evidence.

I am surprised the battery in the Tesla did not blow up. Lithium batteries have a nasty habit of giving you all their energy at once. I would think a Green Beret could come up with a better bomb than some fireworks and cans of gasoline, at least fertilizer/ diesel fuel. Why would you rent a Tesla for a long road trip? The self driving function of the Tesla is interesting though. Why didn’t he try to crash into the inside of the hotel if he wanted to blow it up? He drove there once and then came back, was that to map the route for the car? That would seem to imply he was dead and the car drove its self there. Also Green Berets go through a rigorous Psych screening in the selection process and receive extensive training, far beyond what a ordinary infantryman gets. This sounds much more like he was on a mission, got caught by the bad guys, killed in such a way as to send a message to his bosses. I am just speculating though.

“I rented a Tesla Cybertruck. It’s the s**t,” read a text to Arritt, obtained by the Denver Gazette.
“I feel like Batman or halo,” he added, seven minutes later, referring to the science fiction video game franchise.
“How fast is it?” Arritt responded. “Ungodly,” Livelsberger wrote.
Livelsberger also bragged to his ex about “building drones” in his new role. “You would love it,” he added.
Arritt told the Denver Gazette Livelsberger was “like a kid with a new toy” in a series of texts before the blast. However, she said she found it strange that Livelsberger had reached out given they had split up in 2021.
FBI agents tracked Arritt down after reading the text messages between the pair and informed her that he had also reached out to other ex girlfriends in the days before his death, per the publication.

Behavioral Changes After Deployment
Arritt noticed a significant change in Livelsberger’s behavior following his return from a 2019 deployment to the Middle East. He had suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) during the tour, which marked a turning point in his demeanor. Livelsberger became more withdrawn, isolated, and emotionally distant. Arritt believes these symptoms were indicative of untreated post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression.
In her own words, “It’s not acceptable to seek treatment when someone is in Special Forces.” This stigma surrounding mental health care in elite military units may have contributed to Livelsberger’s inability to address his struggles.
On his route to Las Vegas: from Denver he took the I25 south to I40 west route to Las Vegas, probably because of snow issues if he’d taken the direct I70 west route from Denver through western Colorado and across Utah. I checked and there were western Colorado snow issues on the relevant dates.
About the fireworks, none of the states through which he traveled (CO, NM, AZ, NV) allow the type of consumer fireworks he had in Las Vegas. Utah does and Colorado residents travel there to buy them, so he may have had them stored at one of his several residences in Colorado Springs, CO and his overnight stop there without seeing his estranged wife after driving from Denver was probably to pick them up along with his firearms.

Of course we have SF and other military in Ukraine. Someone has to train and operate western weapons. For example Patriot systems and tanks. There is no way a 19-year Green Beret would not know that a bunch of gas cans and fireworks would produce a flame weapon not a blast weapon capable of damaging a building.
This was intended to produce a spectacular fireball and a lot of noise. It was not driven into a crowd of people and it was “aimed” upward not outward at person-height. It lacked the explosive power (Brisance or detonation pressure) to damage a steel and concrete structure, especially since it was parked out about 10 feet away from the wall

Matthew Livelsberger, identified as the suspect in the Las Vegas Cybertruck explosion outside of Trump International, was a registered ‘No Labels’ voter — though a family member described him as a Trump supporter.
Livelsberger became a registered voter in El Paso County, Colo., in June 2020 when he got his driver’s license through the Department of Motor Vehicles, according to the El Paso County, Colo., clerk’s office.
At that time, he was unaffiliated with a party. His registration was canceled after he failed to vote in two general elections, and then he re-registered to vote online, registering in the “No Labels” party July 2024.
No Labels is a centrist, nonprofit organization formed in 2009 as the brainchild of founding Chairman and former Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman, a Democrat-turned-independent, and Nancy Jacobson, a political activist. The political organization has not returned requests for comment.
The group calls itself the “commonsense majority” and targets people who are feeling “politically homeless” and “tired of the extremes on the left and the right,” according to a previous Las Vegas Review-Journal report.
Colorado has recognized No Labels as a minor political party since 2023, and it has approximately 24,100 registered voters, according to Colorado secretary of state data.
Dean Livelsberger, the uncle of Matthew Livelsberger, described his nephew as a patriot and a Trump supporter who had been in the Army Special Forces.

Admittedly, the video is not ‘great quality’, but slowing it down, I figure we’d see a muzzle-blast from the interior b/c the windows are not opaque (tinted != light-proof) at the very least. A deagle is not a small pistol… pretty big blast when fired.
