Hasn’t it!!! It’s astounding to me how many wonderful artists there are.
Each Saturday on my DFW classical station, WRR 101.1, at noon there is an hour dedicated to youngsters who are passionate and proficient in the instruments they play. I listen in amazement at these young people (ages 12-17) and marvel at the gifts God has given them.
So far no classical guitarists…but one day…

We had a rather strange new year’s eve here. I live out of town and our new year at midnight was absolutely silent. For the past 15-20 years midnight new year’s eve sounds like the start of ww3, lots of gunfire for about 15-20 minutes.
This year there was not even one single shot fired. Complete silence.
Why the huge change? The only thing I can think of is that for the past 15-20 years illegal aliens have been firing their illegal guns with impunity. I know the ones who live both east and west of me always fire away at midnight but didn’t this year.
Is it because of the impending deportations?
After yesterday’s two events made sure to go to the local station and fill the gas tank and then off to the grocery store for a few back-up staples thinking January is going to be ‘Lit’ as they say.
It is just a matter of time when those illegals go to the store to use those cards to pay and learn they are at zero balance. Be aware, what we used to call street smart and definitely keep those hypnotizing devices aka smart phones out of sight for those will be the first things they grab for an easy cash turn-around.

I advise the same, Garrison. For those that are comfortable doing so it didn’t take the Mrs. long at the range to get “accustomed”.
First visit was with an instructor and after 5 or 6 visits she was doing well. (arrow indicates factory ammo misload said she 😂)
She had never held a handgun 5 years ago but now affords it the required respect and safety and is very comfortable with it.
We enjoy going to the range and regret that we don’t take time to do it more often.

I came here to see what you had to say about all the cold air the weather channel is hysterical about.
OK! The models are still showing serious cold but now are not showing historic cold penetrating so far south. Colder than average temperatures are going to dominate in the east starting this weekend and lasting almost to the rest of January. The worst of the coming cold will run from January 5th to the 15th.
Good snow coming this weekend in the east. The models don’t agree where the worst will be. Some showing it south down in KY, TN and further south and some showing it centered over the Ohio Valley all the way up to I-80. Joe Bastardi like the northern option that the SPIR, JMA, and MET models are showing
But regardless of where the main focus of the storm is centered it is still very likely that NY and PA will see significant lake effect snows up along I-90 and Michigan along the US 31 corridor.
The Madden Julian Oscillation forecast shows that the pattern will flip and it is looking like February will be about as much warmer than normal as January is going to be colder than normal.
So it’s looking like we can have Jimmy, our house and dog sitter come over and leave the place in his hands and Sherry and I can head down to Daytona Beach and see our girls sometime in February.
Having a house and dog sitter that stays at your place for $50.00 a day plus stocking up with the food he likes before we go, is really great considering the cost of a good kennel these days. It is nice that Gabby the cat, and Geisha and Buckley don’t have their abodes and routines disrupted. And Jimmy keeps the place clean.

Well it’s not too early to talk about the 2025 tropical storm season though it is too early for a meaningful forecast for the hurricane season in the N. Atlantic basin.
Generally the sea surface temperatures are cooling globally. That indicates that the summer of 2025 is likely to be a bit cooler than last year. But it also means there will be more contrast in the water and air temperatures between the tropics and the temperate regions which indicates more potential for storms.
Globally the Accumulated Cyclone Energy was only 75% of normal in 2024 despite a hyperactive hurricane season in the N. Atlantic basin. The cooling ocean temps point to a more active tropical cyclone season globally in 2025.
The climatnistas are currently bragging that their climate models are going to become more accurate because of the recent advances in computer date processing technology. I don’t believe them for a second. GIGO still applies. They can’t model cloud cover and it’s feed backs nor can they input the variability in insolation resulting from variations in solar irradiance and flux because it is beyond our ability to accurately forecast those variables. Nobody has figured out how to forecast when and where sunspots will appear and when there will be a coronal mass ejection aimed towards our planet.

Why were you in army ski instructor school?
Did you teach sking?
Yes Shm, I was a ski instructor. I spent 8 1/2 years on Army Special Forces A teams. That whole time I was on teams specializing in Alpine and cold weather operations. Every February there we would to to either Smugglers Notch or Stow in Vermont for down hill ski training and then a field exercise in the Green mountains. My team also did other winter warfare training in other places.
For example one January we boarded a C-141 and flew across country and jumped in on a DZ at Ft. Lewis in Washington. The next morning we were trucked to the base of Mt. Rainier and climbed that mountain and set up a base camp near the summit. The intent was to conduct winter warfare and mountaineering training. But after a day and two nights we got a call on the guard net ordering us to get off the mountain ASAP. Avalanche conditions were getting severe and two civilian climbers had been killed in one on the western face of the mountains. So we packed up and hustled down that mountain using what the most experienced climbers on the team had determined was the safest route through snow then freezing rain, then rain as we descended.
AFter 5 1/2 years in 3rd Bn., 10th Special Forces Group, then at Ft. Devens, MA, I was assigned to a team in Company A of the 1st Battalion at Flint Kasserne in Bad Tolz Germany. I signed in there in 1986 and because of my years of experience was almost immediately was selected to be assessed for ski instructor training.
So late in October we that were selected were taken to a glacier in Austria where the Australian ski team was training to be assessed for suitability as instructors. I passed. Part of the ski instructor training was taking the German Army ski instructor course.
All SF soldiers in the Battalion were issued season passes to a ski resort in Benediktbeuern. We that were to be instructors went through further training there and then were trainers for the other soldiers. Instructors were assigned a class level. Of course being new meant I was assigned to train the least experienced. In later years I advanced to instruct intermediate level troops but never got the train at the expert level.
The whole objective was to get the troops to be able to negotiate terrain off pista with weapons and full rucksacks.
That year from the time I went through the training assessment I did not go more than two days without being on skies until April of the following year because my team went to Italy to take part in the Italian Special Forces winter warfare training after our own training was done.
The skis were Alpine touring skies. That means that the bindings allowed you to lock the heals down for downhill skiing and unlock them for cross country skiing.
The next year I attended the Norwegian Army winter warfare training at Dumbas, Norway. Again I didn’t go two days in a row without being on skies from from November through March of the following year. The snow in Germany was fantastic that year, with powder up ones waist off pista.
The helicopter skiing was the reward to the trainers after they had completed training the other troops. We would get a whole day flying to a peak, skiing down to a pasture at the base, getting on the chopper and flying to another peak to repeat the process.

Sounds like a mostly fun army job. The army is so big and then there are all the other countries armies. and lots have special forces and sking special forces. It sure had changed from WW2, 4o years since the devil’s brigade which the book said was started for fighting in the mountains of Norway. It also seems amazing fdr even had time to set it up. Did you like the book? Was it really the start of special forces?
And meanwhile the Manhattan project was going on and army involved in that too.
Ski instructing was extra duty. We were still regular members of a team. There are two medics on an A team, or at least there are supposed to be, they’re always about 1/3rd short of authorized strength in medics.
For the first year after graduating from the Special Forces Qualification course the new SF soldier is on probationary status. There were four SF medics that went to Ft. Devens in my class. One quit, voluntarily terminating his SF status, during the first winter warfare training. Another was found unsuitable and had his SF status terminated involuntarily that first year. Only Larry Hoff and I remained from my class. I knew that they guy they got rid of wasn’t going to make it. There’s always a few the slip through the cracks during the SFQC.
SF is a way of life and those that thought that making through the SFQC was the hard part found out otherwise and if they could not adapt they were gotten rid of one way or another.
During my first winter warfare training field exercise it never got above 0 F and one night got down to -30 F with a windchill of about -90. Medics have to put their IV bags, any other injectables, and ointments that will freeze along with their canteens in the sleeping bag with them to keep them from freezing. The leather HagWag mountaineering boots were ones pillow because they would freeze solid and me very difficult to put on.
One would get up before sunrise during what is usually the coldest part of the day to pull “stand to” because that is the time anyone tracking you would be most likely to attack. Team members took turns pulling security in one hour shifts during the night.
Your weapons, mags, and ammo are kept outside the tent so they stay cold. If you brought them inside the tent the body heat and condensation from your breath would warm them and they would sweat. If that happened then once they came back to ambient temp that condensation would freeze locking up the weapon. We used Break Free to lube the weapons because it is graphite based and graphite won’t freeze and lock up the weapon. Of course when fired the weapons the would get hot and then we would have to field strip them and lube them to keep them from locking up.
I lost 15 lbs in 15 days during that first winter warfare.
By my third winter warfare I had become a pro at moving, surviving, and operating in such conditions. My body fat was down to about 5%.
Sounds brutal. The skiing does sound like a lot of fun!
The first Special Service Force is part of Army Special Forces linage.
I got caught in two avalanches during my time. Both were baby ones thank God! One I managed to swim and stay on top. The other one buried me upside down but I managed to kick a hole and get myself out without assistance.
Initially in the field in avalanche conditions we trailed a 25′ avalanche cord behind us. It was simply a piece 550 parachute cord with a knot tied in it every 10 ft. The chord would float on top of the snow. Later we got transponders. Each soldier had one. In the event of someone being buried in an avalanche the transponder could be switched from transmitting to receiving so we could locate whoever was buried.
When we had a snow field that was an obvious channel for an avalanche that we had to traverse across we would move very gingerly and quietly across it one man at a time.

Woke up this morning to an alert on my phone regarding the impending cold snap heading briskly through Central Indiana. Despite feeling like meteorologists invoke a “cry wolf” narrative to keep us in the perpetual “emergency state”, I am going to head on into the office and process mail and deposits so I am not stressing on Monday in case… IN CASE… it gets yucky outside. It is a great REMINDER, to check our little indoor portable generator sets and we are charging them up now to full capacity. With this day and age, it doesn’t hurt to be vigilant. Lord knows what the looney toons have in store. Stay vigilant, friends. Will be great when we feel we can let up from the hypervigilance.

WE ARE FIGHTING A SPIRITUAL WAR OF GOOD VERSUS EVIL
PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD
Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.
I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Gospel Shoes of Peace. I choose to stand in the shoes of your good news, and on the firm foundation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the solid eternal rock. All other ground is sinking sand, I pray that I will not slip or fall, but that my feet would be firmly fitted on your lordship, my Lord Jesus. I choose to stand on you, so that the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus, the eternal Rock of Ages. I receive your holy peace now my Lord, from the sole of my feet to the crown of my head, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray the Shield of Faith into my hand now. As I take up the shield of faith, I ask that you might extinguish every dart and arrow that is launched from the enemy to take me down spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally, and every attempt of the enemy to destroy my joy. I ask that my faith in you would make it flame out. Extinguish every flaming arrow that would come against me, my life, my family, my home, or my ministry. May my faith always be out in front of me like a shield. Give me the courage to “faith my fears” by choosing to walk by faith and not by sight, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Helmet of Salvation, that you might protect my mind from the thoughts that can lead me astray. I choose to take every thought captive, and arrest all intentioned ideas and motives that would harm others, or distract me from your holy will for me. I submit every captured thought to the Lordship of my Lord Jesus Christ, and ask that you would imprison those thoughts that are not of you my Lord. Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.
Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.
With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.
Thank you my Lord, for the spiritual weapons of armor and prayer that you have given me. It is written no weapon formed against me shall prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses me.

Something went wrong I know not what
I snapped and crumbled into a squat

His touch and grace is indeed with us – more than we can imagine. Considering I buried my wife of 20 years yesterday. Pancreatic cancer spread to the brain – 4 months from diagnosis to death. Your writing is again as if God is speaking. And yes I will get through with His help and guidance, and all of you.
Sometimes a broken vessel is soldered together with Gold, and is more precious restored.

Angel of God come visit with me
For lost and lonely I seem to be
