At the core of our great American experiment is liberty.
Freedom is a proximity issue; liberty is about how we engage life. I would argue, the issue of liberty is perhaps the single most consequential facet of the next several years that few people are discussing.
The Tech Bros as they are now colloquially called, are building the tools for rapid expansion of the surveillance state.
Palantir (Peter Thiel) is leading the way to connect Real ID with facial recognition; the system has both military and domestic application. Oracle (Larry Ellison) is building out cloud storage and data processing with speeds to capture massive data and link the tools. xAI (Elon Musk) is building the refinement system for specifically directed targeting. In whole these networks are creating the tools for the Surveillance State.
As we learned with the Obama administration. Every tool within this process is but one election away from being a weapon. However, the fully engaged AI surveillance system has some very predictable probabilities.
Within the AI surveillance system, which I continually assert is not compatible with liberty, the tools are being designed to avoid certain outcomes.
A nuclear weapon kills everyone within the same proximity. AI used as a weapon has the ability to skip certain targets as defined by the people who deploy the detonation.
While the future forecast says that everyone remains essentially “free,” the same cannot be predicted for “liberty.” Some people will be more equal to constitutional protections than others. This is the baseline for my opposition to the specific AI weapon being created by the Tech Bros.
At a certain point this weaponized AI conversation gets very alarming. Using a reference that some might remember, essentially capability shifts from Truckers being debanked for opposing government, to Truckers being de-personed for opposing government. The Truck is disabled before the Trucker arrives at the protest point, and the Trucker is identified and warned proactively. Phones stop working, credit cards and atm’s are moot, GPS is disabled, and the Trucker encounters a place where every tech interface rejects his/her transactional intent.
Now, insert “Politically Exposed Persons” (PEP) as defined by the political control operators wherever you see the word Trucker to expand the point. The PEP might be “free,” but does the PEP have liberty.
In building the system there are going to be key inflection points where an American engineer on the process might take exception with the contracted tool being built. How do the Tech Bros avoid that problem, H1Bs.

Once built, it will be impossible to unbuild it, and it will not matter one whit if Trump subsequently opposes it afterwards.

I concur that the privacy pendulum is shifting too far in the wrong direction. How does one quantify Liberty well enough to make good, supportable decisions on the Liberty versus technology curve? Inevitably, safety/security is going to factor in – because those are key rationales for constituting a country in the fist place.
First problem to be solved – what set of constraints does citizenship impose on our society? This supports focusing on untenable constraints.
The assumption technology progress can be stopped is simply wrong-headed IMO. It will follow its own path – whether here or someplace else. Technology has been weaponized because bad people have been weaponizing it. That’s the second set of members (err…persons of interest) to be solved.

I am in HR type role….they want me to show I used it to help write things like emails/notes/presentations, etc. WHY? In the 1960’s and 70’s, there were strict laws against sharing super computer technology with our adversaries. A super computer then by definition could handle magnetic tape and key punch cards much faster than most main frames in large universities or groups of banks who could afford to have a computer. In the 90’s trigger words in emails had to be looked at by real humans. That led to lots of trigger words in email headers where the body talked about Thanksgiving or Christmas dinners at grandmas house. Finding things on the internet originally was by word of mouth, or a digital word in a chat room. Then Google figured out how to do internet searches. Then they learned how to charge for bumping you up in importance in searches, and then how to screen undesirables from searches. Now computers have been programmed to read and summarize data at alarming speeds. By comparison, no single human scholar can read all the new treatises in his own field. Computers can do it much faster. Digital memory used to be expensive and available in limited quantities. Now digital memory is virtually unlimited. If only a few billion people are entering stuff into their computer at any one time, the technology to harness all of it, and the storage space to preserve it, and the technology to evaluate and quantify it exists. The only way to preserve liberty now is to have serious curbs to punish anyone or any institution that abuses it. For example, if a subcontractor to the FBI does an illegal search of a data base on me, that individual, and the entire chain who hired or supervised him, should be both crimminally and civilly acountable in a court of law. The FBI agent in charge of the contractor should be liable to oversee everything the contractor does, and to immediately stop and prosecute any misbehavior. The agents superiors must likewise supervise him right up the line.
Is there enough will to preserve liberty to hold our abusers accountable? We could pretend that we will not allow AI to do what the technology makes possible. That would be like banning firearms for law abiding citizens. Or we could trade our liberty for various kinds of anti-virus or encryption software, you know, trade liberty for safety. Any historic examples of that working?

Eliminate FISA Section 702
If 702 will not be eliminated, then amend the legislation and move the FISA courts out of DC and involve County Sherrifs. If there is abuse, have the abuse happen as close to voters as possible.
Impeach DC judges involved in FISA abuses – send a message to the whole judiciary branch that abuse will not be tolerated.
Prosecute current or former DOJ personnel who violated the 4th amendment rights of citizens or abused the process criminally in other ways – again, send a message.

We already have surveillance. It’s too late. We already have cameras everywhere. We already have photos on driver licenses and passports. We already have facial recognition systems. All your electronic stuff already can be turned off.
Real ID eliminates counterfeiting of driver licenses. But the magnetic card on it has embedded all kinds of data for years.
For at least 15 years I’ve been imploring people to stop with the cell phones and cool internet of things gadgets, stop with the electronic banking and the constant GPS. If more people had listened, more alternatives of old still would be available. Like payphones. And landlines that still work when the electricity goes out. And decent printed road maps… Etc. etc. etc. We’re getting plugged in no less than the battery people on Matrix.
