Troy’s Holiday Whodunnit 2024 – Henry Livingston vs Clement Moore as Poets of “Night Before Christmas”
The interview covered the first researcher I worked with, Professor Don Foster, but the proof of Henry’s authorship actually came in the research done with the Shakespearean scholar, Emeritus Professor McDonald Jackson of the University of Auckland, New Zealand. Mac used statistical analysis on the body of work of Henry, Moore and the Christmas poet, looking at phoneme pairs – the last sound of one word followed by the first sound of the next. It’s essentially looking at where your tongue moves in your mouth while reciting aloud. Smoothest recitation comes when the two sounds are made close to one another in your mouth. The more movement, the more awkward the speaking. Discriminators showed that Henry and the Christmas poet had statistically similar favored phoneme pairs, while Moore was statistically quite different. The significance is that it’s an unconscious mechanism. Unlike big words which a poet might use in other poems to imply the original work is theirs, unconscious characteristics are truer tests of authorship. It’s very hard to get that across to interviewers as the concepts are complicated. Dunder and Blixem turns out to be easier for people to understand. Sigh.

I was surprised by the interview request. The research was over some 7 years ago. So I had a week to attempt to stuff 10 years of research back into my skull. Three days later I had a mini stroke for 2 hrs which I can only ascribe to the stuffing stress. They always said don’t cram for a test. They were right. Fine now.
Only frustrating thing was that they were only interested in Don’s research because he’s a Troy neighbor in Poughkeepsie. Unfortunately, literary analysis isn’t as conclusive for proving things. Mac is a down and dirty statistician, and what he came down with was a PROOF that Henry was the author and not Moore. But to understand it was beyond what they were trying to do with this particular documentary. Mac’s book explaining the research was written for his peers, which is why it’s pretty much unreadable. I wrote a big book on Henry and translated Mac’s peer-speak to people-speak, but it’s still heavy going.

Thanks, Patty. I’ve never been particularly comfortable in interviews. I’m much happier behind the camera. But this one actually was great. Husband and I used to go out as a team making videos after we took early retirement. And this was a husband and wife team so both husband and I had a good time with them. She knew she wouldn’t use the complicated stuff, but she let me put it all on camera for 50 min and then sent me the source footage to use as my own. So I can make my own little “Henry Livingston Moments” out of it for a while. Fun to look forward to.

So long ago, between Thanksgiving and Christmas, the family would bundle up each Friday evening and go downtown Bakersfield. We would walk up and down Chester Ave, the main street, and enjoy all the Christmas decorations in the store windows.
Brock’s, a locally owned department store, would always go the extra mile and have moving displays in the windows complete with little trains on tracks that went from window to window.
As a kid it was always magical.

I wasn’t “in studio” for the records but I “worked” the records post production. He was a mellow cat met him once as we took him ( Grover ) around the home offices for the nickle tour.
I got to do that for our deal with The Killer too! Jerry Lee was signed to our then new Nashville offices per Jimmy Bowen ( he also got us Roy Orbison )..

I was good friends with Buddy and he and I used to jam together as he was getting his deal with Neil Bogart’s “Casablanca Records” ( now best known for Village People Y.M.C.A -L O L )
Here’s a song I wrote with him and we used to alternate in my music room I’d play guitar ( all two chords 🙂 and then play drums and we’d trade off. We’d jam for hours on this stupid “riff” but it was a lotta fun. Cpl songs on that LP came from my house back then 1975 Hollywood.

Biography: William Thomson was one of the foremost scientists and engineers of his age. Born in Belfast, Thomson studied at Cambridge before becoming a professor at Glasgow University where he remained for 50 years.
As an academic he published more than 600 scientific papers, his most famous where he proposed an absolute scale of temperature, now called the Kelvin scale.
Thomson became famous to the public through his involvement in the laying of the Trans-Atlantic telegraph cable in the 1850s and 1860s and for his inventions, including the Kelvin compass and a sounding machine. In 1866 he was knighted by Queen Victoria and created 1st Baron Kelvin of Largs 1892.
Thomson’s involvement with industry made him rich as well as famous. He was buried in Westminster Abbey in 1907.

I know not a lot about hoof trimming- which is why we have a farrier. He comes about every 4 months. The hoof structure is very complicated, but it was explained to me by one vet that it is as though there is a little pump inside each hoof that keeps the circulation pumping. When the equid walks it engages that pump. If the hoof is not structured properly, and the circulation is impaired, there is a breakdown of the laminae or layers in the hoof. This can lead to laminitis also known as founder – a very serious, painful, even life threatening condition. There are other causes of laminitis, such as diet.
One of our burros suffered from laminitis, and with good vet and farrier care, thankfully recovered fully.
I just know there is a Treeper here with far better knowledge than I – perhaps patty in porterville?
I’m glad your burro recovered. Secretariat got laminitis and had to be put down. In his case it was due to diet, the unusually wet early spring caused rapid pasture growth and too much nitrogen. (IIRC, it’s been a long time since I read the story.) In any case, the vet who did his next post went on to study the disease, found the cause in diet and gave horse (and burro!) owners the knowledge to avoid it.
Most equine owners take great care of their animal’s hooves but before this vet did the detective work to discover the role diet plays they had no idea that turning their animals out to pasture in what looks like a banquet of fresh green munchies could result in a death sentence.

Yes, too rich is the problem. Knocking on a BIG piece of wood on this, but, we think one of the reasons our equids have been pretty healthy and have generally lived a good long life is that they have a free range varied diet on several acres. They really are smart, and we have never seen them go close to plants we know to be injurious to them.
We supplement with Bermuda hay in winter which is far less sweet and dense than Alfalfa – and we had to cut down on carrots and apples. Way too much sugar. But Christmas- we hand them out to everyone so they can treat them! 🥕 🍎

The white stuff the farrier cuts off is called keratin. It’s a protein. It grows over time and needs to be trimmed back to keep the hoof flat and balanced. Most domestic horses don’t get enough good exercise to keep the keratin in check from growing around and impeding the frog.
In the center of the bottom of the hoof is a little pump, called a frog. Each time the horse takes a step it presses on the frog and helps to keep the blood flowing up and down the horse’s leg.
That’s what I learned many, many decades ago. The farrier also checks for little stones that can be stuck in the hooves and can cause lameness if not removed. Back when I had my horse I used a hoof pick and cleaned out the hooves before each time I would go riding.
Good explanation Patty… I was completely newbie when we moved to NCFL … bought 1/2 Arab.. 1/2 Quarter.. Vet and Farrier schooled me on hoof .. learned to pick daily..also would mention infection finds its way into hoof … causing great harm.. so keeping eye is important..👍

I have two Guinness Stout cans in my garage fridge and an 8 pack outside waiting to go in when those are gone. I prefer the cans because the CO2 in a plastic ball that is pierced when you open the can. Makes the beer taste fresher than the stuff in the bottles.

A 1,800-year-old silver amulet discovered in a burial in Germany is the oldest evidence of Christianity north of the Alps, according to a new study.
Researchers made the discovery by digitally unrolling a tiny scroll inside the amulet, which revealed an unusual Latin inscription. The finding may upend historians’ understanding of how Christianity was practiced in the early Roman Empire.
Measuring just 1.4 inches (3.5 centimeters) long, the amulet contains a wafer-thin sheet of silver foil that’s rolled up tightly. Archaeologists discovered it in the grave of a man who died between A.D. 230 and 270 and was buried in a cemetery on the outskirts of Frankfurt. The man likely wore the amulet on a cord around his neck, as it was found just below his chin.
The ancient city of Trier and its surroundings were among the early outposts of the Faith in the first centuries A. D. Numerous were the Holy Martyrs in that city and nearby.
Shame Trier now boasts a huge statue of its favorite son, Karl Marx.

For years, our Georgia backyard has had an abundance of Northern Cardinals.
They’re such a delight in the bleak, winter months.
Especially the males with their brilliant color and pointed cap!
The Bible says that God speaks to us in various ways – if we will listen.
When I see the beautiful cardinal at the birdbath, he reminds me that His Creator – and ours – is a loving, good God.
Because the cardinal keeps his red feathers year round, that unexpected pop of color within the gray skies/bare trees, encourages us that God is there.
He sends a wonderful gift to enjoy in a tiny bird …
Amazing … how can it be … that God would care for us so kindly!
