I think Canada is in a financial downward spiral, and people are just figuring that out. Eastern Canada is hard hit by Trudeau’s horrendous fiscal policies, while Western Canada is fairly insulated and prospering due to wealth from oil, gas, agricultural and mineral resources.

I lived in Calgary, Alberta for two years back in the mid 1980’s. I found the Canadians to be very polite and also full of an inferiority complex when it comes to the USA. The extent of this is some of the revisionist history they were taught about the War of 1812. Canada was nothing but what remained of the British and French control of their colonies outside of the USA in North America. But their history books tell of having won that war with help from the British Empire. The truth is that the British pretty much did the fighting after their invasion and attempted destruction of our Federal Capitol. They believe that the USA invaded Canada and were repelled by the brave Canadian forces who were allies of the British. Canada was only a colony of Great Brian at the time and they had no say in whether the British could stage military forces and conscript Canadians into the fight.
The USA was forced into a two front war, not to even include the landing at New Orleans which was an attempt to make us fight in a third front. The war ended in a stand off because the French had once again become Britain’s biggest military problem. The USA fought them to a standoff, once they began moving military assets back to the European battle fields. We were lucky to have survived the War of 1812, but it had little to do with Canadian war heroics.
I never cared much about this Canadian version of events, because I understood that much of the eastern seaboard of Canada was settled by the loyalists to the British Crown who fled the US Colonies during our own fight for Independence 30 or so years earlier. These people were truly mistreated by our Revolutionaries during that time and the stories about the War of 1812 in Canada were more or less a consolation for those people after they mostly ended up in settlements in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia at the time of the American Revolution. War has always had a deleterious affect on history.
All of that said, whether they like us much or not, Canada is the best foreign country for Americans to visit and do business with on this planet. I loved my time in Canada and I believe Canadians are the most welcoming people I have ever met, outside of the USA. Trump has no intention of making Canada into a State. He is just saying things to get Trudeau to understand that he does not intend to share any of his power with that mealy mouthed failing Prime Minister.
At the time there were Upper Canada and Lower Canada. I don’t think you can really understand the war without considering the involvement of the American Natives / Indians which helped shape the theaters of operations. For example the Creek War and the attempted alignment of Tecumseh with the southern tribes. The war in the west was more about Indians than Upper Canada.
Western canada is gorgeous and nice people. Quebec is nothing more than rude insulting people. Had to spend time in Montreal back in the late 90’s, in all my travels for work I had never met a more rude group of people. I spent a year in Toronto while having to fly to different parts of the country for short trips and Montreal is one place I will never ever go back to again.
