Right now there are a certain number of Ensigns and First and Second Lieutenants who spent a portion of their years in Annapolis locked down in their dorm rooms most of the day every day, for weeks on end, on near starvation rations, cut off from their families and the world except through computer screens. Then they were all forced to receive unnecessary and patently injurious shots, and were drafted into being participants in a medical experiment.
I wonder how they view their experiences now.
My son was Class of 2021. He went from loving every day at USNA to “I can’t wait to get the f *** out of here.” He lived at various times during 2020-2021 in dorms at St John’s college nearby and local hotels. He got sick (covid or other things called covid) 3 times. He lost lost 15 pounds and a lot of muscle when confined. He “worked out” in his room. He looked and sounded like hell when I spoke to him and I was shipping off all kinds of protein products and supplements to keep him healthy/his weight up-he made it through. He loves USNA and his classmates and is doing great (as are they) in the Navy. They are mission focused people so they don’t dwell on the past, but it ruined his 1st Class year and time will tell about his health. If you asked him about that period he’d just say “it sucked.” He is a model young officer-super smart, highly motivated, achievement and accountability oriented, even keeled, emotionally and spiritually balanced-as a taxpayer you would be happy with the investment.

A service of DEI selections will not create a force projecting competence, or be a credible deterrence to our enemies.
However, Bravo-Zulu to these young cadets. However, they got there, they ARE America’s first line of defense, at least in the area of future leadership. I am proud of them, wish them well.

The Marines were originally created as shipboard infantry, for hand to hand and rifle combat during sailing ship engagements. Their mission changed over the years, into the pacific landing forces in WWII. They continue existing because they’ve adapted to the country’s strategic missions.
2024, and the mission is changing again. The Army is still best as a conventional land force, who needs to be superior in peer to peer land combat. The Marines are better as a remote, smaller unit force.
I don’t see either service diminishing unless their leadership fails to adapt. The same can be said for the US Navy. Juxtapose this: Will America ever NOT need these combat forces. After the A-bomb and the end of WWII, the political intelligencia dismissed the need for land forces, in favor of ballistic missile and strategic bombers. The Navy expanded it’s missile boats, in part to meet the new threats, but also for relevance (think, “budget dollars on Capital Hill). Then Korea happened, and MacArthur and the US Marines fought the Battle of Inchon to save the Army forces in threat of being overrun.
The threats change, but they don’t go away, and now they’ve exponentially expanded. Technology has expanded the playground allowing small actor with minimum budgets to create lower cost threats to the large nation states. What is America prepared to do to defend against them? An isolationist policy won’t meet the challenge. Hopefully, the Trump Administration can thread the needle between isolationism and “world policeman” to create a foreign and defense policy to succeed in the 21st century, without having “forever wars”. The Trump coalition includes people from both sides of that coin.
