Many people are wondering who recommended him to President-elect Donald Trump (possible hint below). No one is certain, but the withdrawal is a positive sign. This guy was one of the worst sheriffs in Florida for COVID-19 enforcement, and leans left under the mask of leaning right.
For President Trump this withdrawal is a slight hiccup, and he will likely not be happy with the person who recommended the nomination.

There is more work to be done for the citizens of Hillsborough County and a lot of initiatives I am committed to fulfilling. Another issue that may come up during his confirmation hearings is Chronister’s stance on gun safety. In 2019, he called for enhanced mental health screenings for anyone who wants to own a gun, supporting universal background checks and the “red flag” provision in Florida’s 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas Public Safety Act, which allows law enforcement to go to court to take guns away from individuals declared a danger to themselves or others for up to a year.
When Chronister ran for re-election in 2020, his previous financial contributions to Democrats were a sore spot for some Republicans. Although he gave more donations to Republicans, campaign finance records showed that Chronister sent checks to Barack Obama, Charlie Crist, the Democratic National Committee, and to Hillsborough County Democratic state legislators such as Fentrice Driskell, Dianne Hart, and Susan Valdes.

The DEA head is a senior nominee just below cabinet rank. Normally the position nominee would be vetted by Trump’s transition team, background checked, and agreed to accept the nomination before it was announced.
This guy is an elected Sherriff in a very large county. If there were something ontoward in his background, his political opponents would have outed it long ago.
Regardless of who originally nominated him, the public embarrassment associated with him turning it down would have been high on the vetting committees no-no list.
It makes no sense.
Thus I doubt Bondi is the story here. DeBartolo is the more likely source.
The ‘why’ will be interesting. Especially if it turns out the vetting process was bypassed.
