The headwinds in any effort to dramatically cut federal spending will be extreme. Consider:
1) every congressman has federally funded local projects or employees they court for votes;
2) national interests that fund their campaigns which rely on federal funding – pharma, energy, military, whatever;
3) foreign policy funders who expect congressmen to fund the military industrial complex for this or that reason.
The incentives of an individual congressman is to run enormous budget deficits to fund his local/national/international backers. And he gets paid, gets insider trading stock tips, and then lobbying jobs or board seats later on. He doesn’t care that he is bankrupting the country because he will have his $$ when that happens in safe assets – and it will happen after he dies anyway.
So convincing Congress to go against all its natural financial incentives is a Herculean task. It will require an enormous of amount of public bullying in media, constant propaganda and exposure from the Trump administration, and a groundswell of public support to sweep all this aside. Congressmen will need to think they will lose their seats and all their perks and future payoffs if they don’t go along and cut the budgets.
It needs to happen. But it’s going to be one hell of a fight.

The Amish have helped build tiny homes to get people out of tents. People are literally freezing to death. We’ve been sending Buddy heaters, money, supplies, etc., and you know what the Governor does? Tells people that the tiny cabins don’t “meet code” so they have to get out. The government has designated the area a “flood plain” where none existed before. Some got $750 – others didn’t. Some are paying mortgages on homes that were washed away. The situation is catastrophic. The people there don’t trust the government and won’t ask for help. CPS could show up and take their children. The government could take their land. The problem with the lawfare campaign is that it did not just treat the law as an extension of politics, but treated the public as chumps. A large part of the public saw these cases for what they were: the use of motivated judges in favorable jurisdictions for political advantage.
Now, one of the academics who previously said that we have to reimagine our democracy and trash our constitution is advising that the election left “a Democratic Party in dire need of reimagining.”
There is a point where “reimagining” everything from the police to democracy becomes less of an exercise of self-evaluation than self-delusion. What many figures like Moyn are not willing to admit is that what Democrats attempted to do with lawfare was wrong and that the public rejected it … and them.
