Biography: Franz Schubert was only 31 when he died, yet had composed over 600 works, a fraction of which were published within his lifetime. I’ve had a lone Hermit Thrush winter in my yard the last 2 Fall/Winters. He showed up again in October and was hanging around again and somehow he died the other day on my patio. I checked for injuries and believe he just died with an outside chance he hit my back window though he was a few feet from it. Quite sad as I am sure it was the same bird. They call it “Site Tenacity” and Birds will return to the same nesting/migrating/wintering location. One of the most famous is the gorgeous small group of Harlequin Ducks that winter in Brigantine NJ every year for a long time.

I have a (dumb) question for you: the other day I found a little bird on our front porch – he looked unharmed in any way. Normally, if they have flown into a window, their necks are at an unnatural angle. Do birds just die of natural causes or sudden illness as do people?
Yes. And also fatigue or fright. They have a racing metabolism which can be very helpful for the flight or fight response, but it’s extremely limited — so flying too far from a predator can exhaust them. Also they can literally be frightened to death. Read about this in James Herriot’s books – he had to learn special techniques for his aviary patients because they were so easily terrified into a heart attack by a strange doc approaching them.
We have rescued and rehabilitated and released many birds here at our farm. There does seem to be a strong shock reaction common in many. Also temperature sensitive. Quite often we bring them in and put them in a warm, quiet place. If they come around it will be a day or two of just regrouping, then the energy comes back.
We had a bunch of young ones caught by freezing rain once. Dried them off, wrapped in towel, and put in the partially closed over on super super low temp for a bit. I thought they were dead except for one almost gone. I made the futile gesture anyway. Much to my astonishment in short order everyone was up and cheeping and looking for food — the thermal shock had knocked them out !

Interestingly, though we literally have a hundred or more hummingbirds in summer (about a dozen now) I never find them dead (thank, goodness, I love them so).
We’ve have many other rescue animals – horses, mules, burros, dogs, cats, but I know very little regarding birds. Our eastern border of property lies quite close to a bird sanctuary. You and Colkitto, and ERROR provide such great pictures and info, I’ve decided to educate myself better on birds! ❤️

I think so ma’am. I once was walking my dog a few years ago and a house sparrow just fell dead in front of me from a small maple tree by the sidewalk.
We used to pick up birds who ran into our windows. Birds could see through from front to back – not realizing there was glass in the way. Sigh
Not always, but sometimes holding them warm in our hands they would revive.
Of course, you had to hustle when you heard the identifiable ‘smack, crunch’
I had a robin that perched on a portable temporary greenhouse on my back porch and kept flying into the sliding glass door. I got some butterfly decals and put them on the door, end of problem.

Years ago, I had a pine tree outside my bedroom window. It had to be cut down due to some bug infestation. One day, we noticed a red-headed woodpecker pecking away at the remaining stump, looking for food. This went on for a couple of days. Then one day we heard a much louder noise on the window pane, so we came running into the room to see the bird pecking at the glass! Fearing the bird might break the pane, I thought about taping a picture of something to where he was pecking to scare him away. The best picture I had was of the new (at the time) US Supreme Court Justice Sonya Sotomayor from a TIME magazine cover! It worked! I walked outside to see what it looked like to the bird, and it repulsed me too! Hope it didn’t stress him out! True story.

I had a Chat in my yard all winter last year, but I think that was just a lucky accident for me, this bird had found my yard to its liking and perfect for wintering as I have plenty of cover, waterfall & pond, bird baths and I leave plenty of leaf cover behind my shrubs giving the Thrush & others birds plenty of leaf litter to look for food. Hopefully sometime I will get another.
Conkitto – it’s not hard to be sympathetic – and I bet we could provide stories all night.
The OT has cat people and dog people – but for those of us who don’t have pets the critters who frequent our yards are varied and precious.
And I suspect every yard potentially draws a different set. In our Colorado Springs yard we had rufus hummers in the summer, scale quail, owls, rabbits, and deer.
oh, can’t forget the juncos and chicakees. and flickers – oh oh i’m rambling on.
We love them all, don’t we. Duchess would say … God sent angels to brighten our days.

I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.

Scientists are going gaga over the earliest inscription declaring “Jesus is God,” claiming that this 1,800-year-old engraving could change our understanding of Christianity.
The mosaic is “the greatest discovery since the Dead Sea Scrolls,” declared Carlos Campo, CEO of the Museum of the Bible in Washington D.C., where the theologically significant relic has been housed since July, the Jewish News Syndicate (JNS) reported.
Dubbed the Meggido Mosaic, the 581-foot artifact was originally underneath a floor of the Meggido Prison in Israel in 2005, after which it was excavated in pieces by the Israel Antiquities Authority over the course of four years.

WE are coming up on a time when we will see the Sgt. Shultz routine being played out everywhere from Congress to the Court rooms to interviews on TV. Many times more that the many times we have seen it before.

I was about 14 maybe 15? I dunno truly adolescent and I was backstage at the Santa Monica Civic cadging food and drink was was my usual and I ducked behind a curtained sub space and to my eternal surprise found Linda Ronstadt and Bonnie Raitt changing their tops and I will not soon forget Linda turning to me unabashed and in a combination of alarm which immediately turned to kindness as she saw my 15 year old shock and awe and approval – I quickly turned and showed myself back behind the curtain. Exit stage left.

Be careful today #snow It snowed last night…
8:00 am: I made a snowman.
8:10- A feminist passed by and asked me why I didn’t make a snow woman.
8:15- So, I made a snow woman.
8:17 – My feminist neighbor complained about the snow woman’s voluptuous chest saying it objectified snow women everywhere.
8:20 – The gay couple living nearby threw a hissy fit and moaned it could have been two snow men instead.
8:22 – The transgender man..women…person asked why I didn’t just make one snow person with detachable parts.
8:25 – The vegans at the end of the lane complained about the carrot nose, as veggies are food and not to decorate snow figures with.
8:28 – I was being called a racist because the snow couple is white.
8:31 – The middle eastern gent across the road demanded the snow woman be covered up .
8:40 – The Police arrived saying someone had been offended.
8:42 – The feminist neighbor complained again that the broomstick of the snow woman needed to be removed because it depicted women in a domestic role.
8:43 – The council equality officer arrived and threatened me with eviction.
8:45 – TV news crew from BBC showed up. I was asked if I know the difference between snowmen and snow-women? I replied “Snowballs” and am now called a sexist.
9:00 – I was on the News as a suspected terrorist, racist, homophobe sensibility offender, bent on stirring up trouble during difficult weather.
9:10 – I was asked if I have any accomplices. My children were taken by social services.
9:29 – Far left protesters offended by everything marched down the street demanding for me to be arrested. By noon it all melted
Moral: There is no moral to this story. It is what we have become, all because of snowflakes
