Trump and his adviser Elon Musk have also included the agency as a target in their calls to radically shrink the government bureaucracy — and potentially move many of the federal jobs out of Washington.

On the other hand, I am not going to comment on President Trump’s picks for anything, BECAUSE, I am not in his shoes AND I have no idea what he knows for sure at a certain point in time.
I may not “like” or “trust” his choice for a particular position but I’ll be damned if I am going to condemn our President as he quietly and systematically makes his most important decisions prior to his inauguration.
But that’s just me.
My mind keeps going back to the phrase President Trump very occasionally uses, “the good generals, not the TV generals”. I think, hope and pray they and President Trump have been working behind the scenes diligently over the past 4 years and that they know exactly what they are doing. These are not spur of the moment choices. And they must, by position, know more than we do.

As someone who lived through a time of filthy rivers and lakes, when the Cuyahoga River was so filled with trash and chemicals that the river actually caught on fire, Lake Erie was nearly a dead lake and what fish were left in it you wouldn’t dare eat, unregulated dumps littered the countryside polluting the groundwater with their runoff, when some days smog was so bad that it was dangerous to breathe the air, I am totally opposed to eliminating the USEPA. The same globalist multinational corporations that shipped our blue collar jobs to China also felt no compunction about fouling the country we live in so long as they could make a buck doing it. We need the USEPA. We don’t need green new deal.
Good points. Though most of the problems you describe were in specific localities controlled by the States, so could have been addressed by the State-level EPAs. If a Federal EPA could be limited to dealing with real environmental problems, and not a Global chimera like a trace gas in the atmosphere, essential for Life, threatening the world with catastrophic warming, then, yes. Otherwise, no.

As a former employee of a company that had contracts with USEPA, I reflect on meetings I was in with mid-level USEPA staff. Meetings in which they openly discussed (within the walls of the agency…not publicly) hypothetical ways that certain programs could be used to directly affect local lamd use decisions. It was clear from the tone of the discussions that they lusted for that goal in a BIG way.
That was 30 years ago, and they’ve been continuing to lay the groundwork, so to speak, ever since. It was and remains an out-of-control agency that should be strongly roped in, if not eliminated. The states can handle internal environmetal issues. Cross-boundary problems such as mid- and long-range air pollution, can be handled via interstate agreements and compacts. USEPA should be limited to a research and facilitation support role only in those cases.
Same model is being used by FEMA to take property using flood insurance regulations, land use regulatiosn and building permits. Stormwater systems are being intentionally ignored.
Create a crisis.
The EPA didn’t clean up the air or water.
The Supreme Court slapped down the EPA because it is the job of the Legislators to legislate the “regulations” not an appointed bureacracy.
Congress should replace the EPA with proper laws hashed out in conference rooms.
Bad laws can be repealed.
The States themselves have the power to do the same function within their borders. The States are most likely to get it right for their people.
Finally, it actually is up to WE the People to demand such laws from the local state level.

Any legislation establishing the EPA is unconstitutional. The President can ignore the unconstitutional and issue a correct EO to abolish the agency. He can also issue an EO to the Treasury department to not write any supporting checks to any employees. They could either follow his order or he could fire the rogue treasury employees. Again, correct use of EO, while at the same time honoring his Oath of Office.
The Clean Air Act of 1970 was created by Congress; however the EPA was created through Executive Order by Nixon.
Executive Orders can be issued to direct the EPA and any other Executive Branch agency on how the CAA is enforced.

If I were President-Elect, my attitude would generally be: if a department or agency was mentioned in the US Constitution, you survive, but will be getting a severe pruning regarding # of personnel and responsibilities.
If you are NOT mentioned in the US Constitution, expect to be under consideration for elimination at the federal level, with responsibilities sent back to the 50 states to carry out (education, healthcare, environment, FBI, etc). If kept as a federal department, responsibilities will be kept to a supervisory role, with no policy-making, regulation or punishment authority allowed.
PS: I hope Jimmy Carter lives long enough to see his monster–the Dept of Education–eliminated. I thought he also created the Dept of Energy (or was it the EPA?)
