Social media exploded today when reports surfaced that New York officials raided a home, confiscated two rescue animals and then killed them. The squirrel named P’Nut had been saved by a couple in New York who raised and cared for him for seven years. P’Nut had millions of followers on Instagram. Fred the racoon was also confiscated and killed.
NEW YORK – Peanut the Squirrel, of internet fame, has been euthanized after the pet was seized by New York state earlier this week, according to the Department of Environmental Conservation.
The seven-year-old gray rescue squirrel, commonly referred to as “P’Nut” on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok, was put to death, along with Fred the raccoon, so that the animals could be tested for the presence of rabies, according to a statement from the agency obtained by WETM. (read more)

Here’s some alternate-view thoughts, for independent thinkers to consider:
Why all the media focus on the “cute” squirrel only? What about the raccoon? Not cute enough to stir outrage?
Raccoons are unpredictably vicious, with sharp claws and teeth, and absolutely a rabies vector in the wild.
Squirrels can also be unpredictably aggressive and bite. They are very destructive, causing a lot of property damage by chewing, putting holes in roofs to make nests in the attic, etc. For these reasons, many consider them vermin – “a rat with a bushy tail that can climb trees”.
Squirrels are evidently not a common rabies vector in the wild, but confined with animals carrying rabies they could contract the disease from a carrier biting them.
It seems some people ignore these facts and want to keep raccoons and squirrels as pets. This reveals the widespread delusions of animal-personification and obsession with pets-as-proxy-for-children in America today, one of the signs of the collapse of common sense and the traditional family (with indigenous Americans at least).
People assume that because they raised a wild animal from very young in captivity that it is just like a harmless pet dog or cat, domesticated, not a biting hazard. Wrong. They can seem harmless and cuddly for years and then instantly change and attack without warning. (In fact, dogs and cats also have this trait, but people also assume wrongly about those animals – witness the record of dogs biting, mauling, followed by owners defending the animal, saying “it is just a sweet member of the family” etc. And cats biting and scratching without warning, causing nasty infections, etc.)
The DEC euthanizing the squirrel was “better safe than sorry” if the squirrel bit someone. Also to determine if rabies is present in squirrel to assess potential risk of more rabies in the 300 animal menagerie.
The outrage ginned up about the squirrel is another illumination of America’s animal-personification cult run amok. It’s just an animal. Many of us eat animals killed for meat, yes? As long as the killing was humane, it’s no different than killing livestock for meat (except the livestock meat is much better to eat).

The problem with testing for rabies is that it requires a brain biopsy(hippocampus) to look for inclusion bodies, so the animal has to be dead to find out their status. In my veterinary practice, we were required to isolate an animal of unknown vaccination status for 10 days, especially if it had bitten someone, then if central nervous system signs were observed, euthanatize, remove the head and send only the head into the state lab in Massachusetts. Obviously there are many, many problems with this entire process, not the least of which is risk to doctors, staff, and transport agents from contaminated blood, packaging a head in a container safely, and trying to determine whether the animal was neurologically ill. To complicate matters, I was taught (1979 medicine) that bats could be carriers of rabies without ever showing clinical signs of illness, which opened up the possibility that other animals could be carriers too. The legal ramifications of all of this are just awful, and the Commies in Taxachusetts were at all times as unhelpful as possible. I do know this. The entire Peanut episode should have been evaluated based on risk vs. benefit, not on degree of totalitarian control by our government. No squirrel rescued 7 years ago and kept inside is at much risk for rabies. Alternatives such as safe effective rabies vaccines are not necessarily available, and I did have one ferret who went into cardiac arrest following a vaccination with an approved drug, which fortunately we were able to reverse, but made for a very difficult day.

Common sense: “Rescuing” wild animals and keeping them inside a house occupied by humans is risking bites and other harm to humans from the animals, including rabies. Rabies is gravely serious, once symptoms present there is nothing that can be done to stop a drawn-out excruciating death.
I don’t know the laws in NY, but it seems they have laws to prevent idiots from keeping wild animals in their houses posing significant potential risk of harm to innocents (children?) in the house. That seems reasonable to me – the laws protect innocents from grave harm caused by stupidity of others.
Maybe common sense told them that the same sorts of fools who do this, blind to the rabies risk, would not seek rabies vaccine treatment for a bite, leading to another human (child?) suffering the horrific result.

I had a friend that back in the 80’s his dog caught a squirrel. When he tried to get it away from the dog the squirrel bit him. They were able to catch the wounded squirrel and took it to Public health to have it tested for rabies. Public health declined to test the squirrel because squirrels so seldom carry rabies.

Obviously somebody had a beef with these people. If they raised the squirrel then its impossible for it to have rabies they are not carriers. The raccoon is a little different they can carry rabies without being infected themselves but it would have had to have bitten someone for this to be legit. If it was me I would find out who hated them enough to do this horrid thing, someone complained.

To observe the dog takes up to a year and several conditions are identical to the behavior described for rabies. It’s crazy.
The treatment costs up to 30 thousand dollars without insurance (some health departments cover rabies treatment).
The side effects from the treatment can lead to paralysis.

When I stumbled on this story a few days ago, I thought it would have a happy ending. And here we are. This is the most vicious, vindictive behavior of a local government that I have seen in a while. At least since Covid. To be so ruthless as to put down this squirrel and raccoon over nothing, possibly less than nothing, just reveals a very cold heart. A part of me thinks the local health “authorities” take so much joy in doing this.
I hope the guy pursues legal action. Such a sad sight to see.

In Colorado if your Dog has been sprayed by a skunk they will try to make you have your dog held for 7-10 Days monitored to see if it acquired rabies thru the dadgum nasty spray that hit your dog. The vet has complete authority to kill your dog if he suspects it can be dangerous. Not rabid but dangerous. The cost of kennel $10,000 up. $3000 for killing her.
