Social media exploded today when reports surfaced that New York officials raided a home, confiscated two rescue animals and then killed them. The squirrel named P’Nut had been saved by a couple in New York who raised and cared for him for seven years. P’Nut had millions of followers on Instagram. Fred the racoon was also confiscated and killed.
NEW YORK – Peanut the Squirrel, of internet fame, has been euthanized after the pet was seized by New York state earlier this week, according to the Department of Environmental Conservation.
The seven-year-old gray rescue squirrel, commonly referred to as “P’Nut” on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok, was put to death, along with Fred the raccoon, so that the animals could be tested for the presence of rabies, according to a statement from the agency obtained by WETM. (read more)

Several months ago my wife showed me a story about a visitor to Yellowknife who rescued a newborn baby buffalo from drowning in a river inside the National Park. The guy was there with his family and they saw the baby buffalo struggling in the river after it’s mother and the herd had crossed. The guy did his best and rescued the buffalo only to be arrested by park rangers who then killed the baby buffalo!
Now, the park rangers had all kinds of reasons for killing the buffalo but none of them made sense as there were plenty of animal rescue groups who would have cared for the animal. We’ve all seen baby deer and moose fed by teenage volunteers with a baby bottle. What this demonstrates is the absolute Nazi environmentalists are!
Just remember, in a National Park, you can be arrested for picking up a turkey feather.
Time to decentralize and/or privatize the parks.

The cameras thing is important. I’ve read quite a few news reports lately involving the police locating and covering up interior cameras.
People need to get a little more creative in hiding home surveillance. Use visible exterior/interior cameras to distract from the hidden ones. Have some hard wired cameras or cameras on a network that can’t be shut down if they power off your router.
You have to assume at this point that they’re looking to plant evidence.

Regular police usually show great restraint and professionalism, but it’s the Federal and blue state Dem apparatchiks who are unhinged power freaks.

Being involved in the animal rescue network, I have seen many stories of police shooting beloved pets while the owners were asking and begging for a minute to get the pet under control. There was one report of an officer shooting 2 dogs in the yard who were carrying on because the officer let his own dog go up to the fence and initiate chaos. I think that case included a very small dog. In some cases the dog was unnecessarily shot multiple times.
So I don’t give local police any points anymore than feds.

My grandmother, an immigrant from Sicily, habitually rescued small wounded, sick, hungry animals. I was a very young child who was absolutely captivated by her patience and healing skills. She would care for them, and teach me to help, until they were ready to head back out into the world. Most of the birds were pigeons and bluejays. I didn’t know the difference between a pigeon and a parakeet at the time, but I loved watching her perform her healing magic, and marveled each time a newly strengthened birdie flew away, back to his or her real life. No one ever presumed, or even thought to interfere.

What you do — and I know from personal experience — is that when rabies is suspected, animal control will take your dog, for example, and quarantine it for two weeks to assess if it has rabies or not..

At our last house in the city I rescued a young crow that had a damaged wing. It’s parents would not allow me to get close to the bird, but I was able to feed it by putting food in the same place in our yard every day.
The crow with a damaged wing came back day after day, and one day it took flight, then its parents moved on and left it in its new home.
The crow grew strong and came back, day after day, week after week, month after month and year after year. He (I always thought it was a male) always had a wonky feather sticking out of what had been his damaged wing, but he had no problem getting himself out of any bad situation quickly. Usually.
One day he brought his girlfriend home. She had a bum foot that turned sideways. She was able to walk by hobbling on her bad foot, and I thought the pair made a beautiful couple.
They raised a few babies on our acre yard and it was fun to see them teach each baby how to do crow stuff. We saw two times during two different years the weddings of their offspring. One time a murder of approximately 100 crows descended on our yard. They stayed there and just walked around and “talked” to one another. When the party was over and they all left so did the baby, who I believed left with their spouse. But the wonky feather crow and the bum foot crow remained through another winter and into another spring and another baby.
One day my husband yelled that my crow was injured. Although the wonky winged crow knew both of us very well, he knew my voice and would come when I called, he would talk back to me from the top of a tree when I talked to him, and he would leave beautiful feathers for me around his food and water bowls. This day though he actually came to me.
I looked down and right next to my foot I saw him. He walked as though he were drunk, he was dirty with sand and gravel pressed into his feathers, he was missing feathers on his head and shoulder, and he was bleeding. I think he’d been hit by a car on our quiet street, probably by someone like my BIL who purposely swerves onto highway shoulders to try and kill animals while driving. . .
I picked my crow up in a towel and headed to a pet sanctuary a mile away, one where I’d volunteered before to drive a bald eagle from Duluth to St. Paul to take it to an eagle sanctuary (very cool to ride next to a bald eagle for 3 hours).
The people there knew me and knew I loved crows and ravens, and could see my heart was breaking for “my” crow.
They let me stay, showed me what was wrong and what needed to be done to help him, and let me do everything the crow needed.
And although they should not have done it, they allowed me to take the crow home and care for it there.
Two weeks later the crows outside were all calling for him. I wanted to keep him inside and safe forever. My husband knew it was time for him to be released and be a crow again. My husband knows animals very well, so into a large dog cage and outside we went.
All the crows called out when we got outside, and as quick as the door opened his powerful wings took him up into a tree and home with his family again.
In my wildest visions of horrors and the depravity of demented humans I cannot imagine what it would have been like had someone come into my home, took my crow and killed it — even though I had no close intimate interactions with it like these people had with their squirrel.
As I write this I look up at one of a few photographs taken during his time spent with us. It was when he was the weakest and dirtiest.
Sand had been deeply pressed into his feathers and skin and needed to be cleaned. The best way to do that was to lightly scratch his head and shoulders, which I was thankful to do. He never was nervous around me, and when I started to scratch his head he would lower it, closed his eyes and fall asleep. That is the photo I love the most.
I am Raven not for a sick or perverse or mean reason, I am Raven because I love those birds and their cousins, the crows and magpies.
I have 2 sandhill cranes with leg problems that come to me everyday. I also have at least 2 gopher tortoise that have taken up residence on my property. I would be fit to be tied if someone took them or if they were injured in a malicious fashion.

Some ridiculous judge DID sign a warrant. For a squirrel? On a called -in “complaint” by this photog Monica Keasler to the DEC, for unknown reasons. The woman proceeded to brag on her now deleted FB account – she’s also ditched IG & Linked In because people found out who she is.
Reviewing facts, it’s a pathetic case of government waste, overreach, & misuse of resources.
These people rescued & raised Peanut as an orphaned kit. They had him for 7 years. The man created an animal rescue sanctuary as a result, and had allll the app. process done, & it was SIGNED. The only thing waiting on approval was an enclosure. This animal was not capable of wild survival. They tried that initially, but Peanut came back with injuries. Some rescued wildlife is not releasable – this is exactly why rehab sanctuaries will keep select animals after rehab capability is maxed.
A few potential reasons:
Missing limbs
Birds with lack of flight
Loss of vision or hearing
Predators unable to hunt sufficiently
Prey unable to evade predators
Failure to thrive due to health deficits
Captivity-raised lack of survival instincts
Conditions requiring ongoing medication
This RAID involved making the victims sit outside their home for 5 hours while these maniacs tore up everything. They were denied the right to call legal counsel. Feds went thru closets, leaving a complete mess. They broke soap bottles in the bathroom. They took apart the man’s TOILET upon escorting him before he could use it because apparently there could be some important squirrel propaganda hidden in there (I’m assuming in the tank). 😒 Please make it make sense.
They further questioned his wife’s immigration status (Germany), in spite of her having all necessary docs & ID.
Because these psychos descended unannounced & hunted down these ordinarily docile rescues in their normally peaceful home, somebody supposedly got bitten. They used that as justification for killing them to examine brain tissue for signs of rabies.

AS a rescuer MYSELF, this hits hard. I’ve had tragic abuses committed by other organizations that I had to then correct & be the responsible party – costing me hundreds in the aftermath, plus deciding under duress of the situation to adopt as a result. Over the lifetime of a pet, that’s thousands. I continue to do this, in spite of not having a donation for it in 4 years. So to me, it’s an important issue. We talk all the time about being responsible citizens, but when it comes to actually demonstrating it, who steps up? In my neighborhood, it’s just me. Out of pocket.

I live in a small condo development, and we have an abundance of Squirrels.
The squirrels can be a nuisance, as they dig into flower pots, etc.
But, among all of those Gray Squirrels, we also have at least a half dozen Albino Squirrels, which are pure white — and an absolute joy to watch.
So, we tolerate the ‘ordinary’ Gray Squirrels — just so we also have the delightful & entertaining white ones.
Nothing will bring P-Nut back — and whoever actually killed this innocent squirrel — I hope you have nightmares.
I also hope donations will pour into this animal rescue, which is obviously a very caring couple — trying to save neglected/unwanted/abused animals.

181.3 Department actions and prohibitions.
(a) The importation, possession, transportation, sale or release of any live raccoon, skunk, red fox, gray fox or bat is prohibited except under license or permit issued by the department.
(b) The department may summarily amend, suspend or revoke any license or permit issued which allows the taking, possession, transportation, sale or release of any wildlife, when wildlife possessed pursuant to such license or permit is suspected of having been exposed to or contracted rabies.
(c) The department may immediately seize, quarantine and euthanize any wildlife which it reasonably suspects to have been exposed to or contracted rabies.
(d) The department may direct any person possessing wildlife suspected of having rabies to comply with any measures that are necessary to stop or mitigate the spread of rabies.
(e) Department staff may euthanize, using a firearm or other means, any wildlife which is at large and is suspected of having been exposed to rabies.
(f) Raccoons taken pursuant to a trapping license may not be transported alive or sold alive.

There’s probably much more to this story than just a squirrel that’s been in captivity for seven years. Why is there not much being reported about the health history of the raccoon that was also euthanized? Does this all come down to him not having the proper license for the ‘coon?
