The Conservative Tree House may be called a Last Refuge for each of us for different reasons. Whatever trail through the woods brought us here, we have shared the turmoil of storms as we have been finding our voices as individuals in this growing community
Perhaps you’ve had some truly shockingly cruel things said to you purely because you believe in limited government and fiscal conservatism. Perhaps you not only believe that we should be self-reliant and personally responsible, but also believe that when we are allowed to depend on ourselves, we are stronger, more successful, take greater pride in ourselves and our work, and are more likely to make positive contributions to society. And then we are happier people, or at least more likely to be happier.
Which lends to the following theory: Fear is at the core of modern leftism, and love/trust is at the core of conservatism. Modern liberalism, most commonly evolved to leftism, is about control. Conservatism is about self-empowerment.
The need for control is always a reaction to fear. Think in terms or politics and society – the fear behind liberalism is the fear that someone might withhold things (opportunities, money, whatever) from me, fear that if you live your life in a way I dislike, it might affect my life; fear that if you get that job, there will be nothing left for me. Fear that if you make tons of money, it’s means there’s less money out there for me. So, people who believe in leftist ideologies seek control as a means of trying to create guarantees and safeguards against those circumstances they fear.
Modern “liberals”, leftists, try to control the world and people to enable their comfort and happiness. Which, as we know, is an endless quest. Trying to control others does nothing in the way of making oneself happy. By extension, voting in this mindset so that government can try to control others will also – shocking – not lead to a happier, more comfortable life.
The conservative (and moderate, independent, but for the sake of expediency, the conservative), on the other hand, relies on himself to meet his own needs. And the tradeoff of being free to live his life as he wishes is also understanding that he has to make peace with how you live yours. By extension, aware that he wants to be able to hold onto this liberty and freedom forever, the conservative votes accordingly, so that everyone can remain free and in charge of his or her own life.
But here’s the crucial difference, perhaps, particularly where misery on the left stems: The conservative does not worry, so to speak, about you.
The conservative knows that you were born with the same access to self-love, self-empowerment, self-determination and self-reliance that we all were, no matter the circumstances into which you were born. (Think about the millions of people this country has allowed to crawl up from poverty into prosperity – the conservative KNOWS this is possible.) And the conservative believes that if you want prosperity, or a good job, or a good education, you can make it happen – but you have to work hard.
The conservative hopes and intends that the free markets bring you all of the affordable and positive opportunities and resources that you need. The conservative also knows that on the other side of that hard work is great reward – material and, more importantly, emotional, spiritual and mental.
The conservative understands that not only is it a waste of time to try to control you, but it’s also actually impossible. Humans were born to be free. And if we put a roadblock in front of you, you’ll find another way around it. So, we see attempts at control as a waste of resources, energy and time at best, and at worst, creating detrimental results that serve to hinder people’s upward mobility or teach dependence. We see much more efficiency, as well as endless opportunity, in leaving you to your own devices. And we want the same in return.
This is where modern democrats’ mis-view conservatives as heartless. But really, the conservative believes that there is one and one path only to sustainable success and independence – and that is self-empowerment. All other avenues – welfare, affirmative action, housing loans you can’t actually afford – ultimately risk doing a disservice to people as they teach dependence on special circumstances, the govt, or arbitrary assistance (that can disappear tomorrow). And the real danger – they will ALWAYS backfire and leave the recipient in equally or more dire circumstances. Any false improvement will always expire.
The conservative believes in abundance. The liberal believes in scarcity.
The conservative believes man is born free and will be who he is, no matter what arbitrary limitations or rules are put on him. The leftist believes man is perfectible, and by extension, believes a society at large is perfectible, and command and control are justified in the quest to a “perfect” utopian society. (Sounds familiar!)
The conservative tends to be more faithful – and not necessarily in God, but in the ability of the individual to find great strength in himself (or from his God) to get what he needs and to be successful. Therefore, the conservative has an outlet for his fear and disappointment – trust and faith in something bigger.
The leftist believes the system must be perfected in order to enable success. Therefore, disappointment is channeled as anger and blame at the system. Voids are left to be filled by faith in the govt, which they surely then want to come in and “fix” things.
And therein lies the roots of love and fear respectively. For the conservative, when life presents great struggles, he knows he has the power to surmount them. Happiness stems from internal strength and perseverance. For the modern leftist, when life presents great struggles, the system failed, therefore they were at the mercy of a faulty system, and they believe that only when the system is fixed can their life improve. Happiness is built on systemic contingencies, which they will then seek to control or expect someone else to.
One blames himself. The other blames anyone and everyone but himself.
And there it is. There’s where the meanness comes from. The leftist ideology causes that person to cast anger at the world when things go wrong or appear “unfair.” He constantly chooses only to see the “injustices” – and that makes for a very miserable, mean, blame-casting existence.
One last point that we have seen over and over and over with many (not all) of our leftist friends: Extreme stinginess and cheapness.
In our conservative community growing up, we were always taught that you give when people are in need – make donations to the Red Cross when there’s an earthquake, donate to charity when you can afford it, etc. Even if it’s just $50 here and there – it’s the right thing to do. Conservatives see this as the responsibility that comes with gaining from the capitalistic system; if you happen to benefit greatly from the system, it’s your duty to give back.
The liberal, on the other hand, does not seem to share this same viewpoint, at least not in my experience. And perhaps think this is linked to believing in scarcity, and that your dollar comes at the cost of mine. So, it seems that liberals, on some level of consciousness, feel guilty about not being voluntarily charitable. Therefore, to write off their guilt, they outsource their “generosity” to the government by voting for wealth re-distributive policies. Thus, the liberal cheats himself of the joy and addictiveness of direct generosity. (Not to mention – re distributive policies ALWAYS end up dis-empowering those who they’re meant to help.)
However each of us got here, it’s probably a fact that we have the turmoil of those storms in common, perhaps some unease that we could share and always, we also find fresh ground to cover from day to day. We’re developing valuable relationships as we trust one another in our community in the woods. The chatting in the branches encourages, strengthens and equips for some serious walking.
We think the Treehouse is a good armory for those who doing long distance walking for the sake of our nation. We hope you’ll think so, too. Find yourself a good branch….or just pull up a rock to the campfire.

I’ll go even deeper. My formal college education was in Behavioral Science. I’m not sure which game first, the chicken or the egg, as far as my interest in why people do certain things, and/or how people become the type of people they became. I am in no way a mental health professional, but that background plus my Information Technology/Analysis background, has enabled me to spot patterns quickly. Leftists ALWAYS overestimate their intelligence, value, worth and are completely oblivious to their flaws, weaknesses etc. Conservatives are ALMOST ALWAYS estimate those qualities fairly accurately and are typically aware of their flaws and shortcomings.
Leftists have a Me centric worldview and mindset, with at best, secondary concerns for everyone else. Conservatives prioritize themselves and their own, because doing so is critically important for species survival but they also consider the rest of society throughout life.

I know because I was a lefty.
I went to a state university liberal arts college in the late 80’s early 90’s. I was the first in my family to do so. It was a big deal and we were all excited and proud.
During my time, I had required liberal arts general elective courses I had to take to earn my bachelor’s degree. These courses that were required were government (Marxism,
Communism, economics, capitalism, etc.) I had classes to choose from
from that list (I am sure there were others). I also had to choose between women’s studies, minority studies and something else. This is just a small sampling of I want to say at least 30 required courses one needed to take for their degree. I did have an amazing American History professor who taught us the truth, and some others that weren’t totally leftist (there were still some normal people/classes). But, I don’t know the ratio at this point because it was a while ago.
So I took the classes I thought I wanted to learn about. When I got into them, I was presented with “facts, statistics, stories and testimonies” ad infinitum of the unfairness, imbalance of power, oppression of people; read: victims and oppressors. It didn’t come all at once. It came drip by drip. Day after day, textbook after text book. I was in shock! How could people not know about this?! I was told the corporations (rich white men) that own the media keep it from people to keep their interests intact. Again, it was subtle. They don’t come right out and say such things, not at first. Only later when I was entrenched. The poor and oppressed have no voice. Etc. you get the picture. Little by little, my young compassionate heart for people was edged further and further to the left. Before long I was a bleeding heart liberal- and believed that anyone who had not been taught what I knew and read and learned, was in total ignorance and darkness. They don’t have the information I had. How could they possibly know what they are taking about! I had books upon books, articles and studies and proof! After all, I had seen the statistics! I had access to the information! FACTS! Who could argue with me over facts?! I was groomed. I didn’t know it. But therein came the arrogance and there in came the dismissiveness. At certain levels, once you saw the facts, then came the messages that I had been lied to, now questioning what I knew, who I believed, even my beloved, good family members were oblivious to the education I knew. Enter the self righteousness and the inability to entertain a dissenting argument. Just disgust that anyone who could defend the cruelty I had seen (or not side with me) with facts and statistics and stories and studies and testimonies. And I had NPR and the liberal press to support this structure. Movies , music, MTV, and television, too. The “culture” and people in power all were in alignment with this. So I really thought anyone who would go against this was ignorant, idiotic, and stubbornly tied to a sinking ship of evil crap. And if they don’t abandon that ship and wanted to support it, buh bye! Oh, and I moved to NY, and LA and was enmeshed further in that degenerate culture which just fortified my position.
Mind you, this was 30+ years ago.
As well all know they moved into the high schools next via “college prep” (my generation was the one that was told implicitly that you are doomed to poverty and struggle if you don’t get a degree, normalizing the need for their institutionalization). Then the people in my generation who had been brainwashed were leaving college to become teachers themselves, and bureaucrats and policy and decision makers.
I was a Christian through this, and looking back, only God’s grace kept me from contributing to this garbage in a meaningful way other than my stupid voting record. I had friends who went to war, and still had a thread of the fabric of the key values I was raised on. But it was heavily outnumbered by the lies most of the time.
Thank the Lord God Almighty for waking me up slowly but surely issue by issue, reviving wisdom and common sense and goodness and Light, until I finally fully was awake and delivered around 2010/11 (some call it red pilled but really, I rededicated my life to God, with His help, pulling that one foot I had out on theworld back into alignment with Him).
I know that was long, but it scratches the surface. I have stories of radicals visiting the school, books we read (Naomi Wolf was the new feminist darling at the time, who has also woken up), the Handmaid’s Tale was required reading, etc. I could go on and on. I forgot magazines were a huge thing at the time, too.
The facts, studies, stores, and testimonies—I can’t 100% remember, but. Do believe probably a hefty dose came from the UN and other NGOs, which no one was questioning at the time (that I recall).
I hope this helps someone see some of what that lefty perspective is about. It is despicable and I hope
my experience serves as a warning to people about the education system (indoctrination, the “culture” (a.k.a. the world, as God refers to it and warns us to be not conformed to it) and the importance of unrelenting guardianship of parents and grandparents to fight the forces of evil vying for their children’s/grands’ hearts and minds and souls at every turn from daycare onward these days (and I did not have the internet and social media, streaming, and 24 hour news other than CNN at the time added to the mix). I don’t know if there are schools that are untainted. I only know what I experienced, and what I see now with our children, the sexual perversion and grooming, the vilification of parents and them trying to take away the power of parents and giving it to the S.

The Democrats have been working hard on education. Only 30% of Tennessee kids do math and read at grade level. What I am beginning to understand is the Democrats are hard at work on making sure the 30% that can still read and do math are not taught critical thinking skills. They do not want slaves to think. The other part of the equation is to teach the victim to get along with the bully. The victim is doing something wrong to get the abuse. However, if you are talking about our NATION, our NATION that was declared about a dozen years earlier [1776], then, absolutely, we are a DEMOCRACY. So says The Unanimous Declaration of 4 July 1776.
IOW: our USA is not just a NATION and we are not just a State; rather, partially by virtue of these two documents, we are a NATION-STATE. And to put a point on it, we are a NATION that has a System of STATE; NOT the other way around. IOW: We The People — the dog — We wag the tail. We The People, ultimately, CONTROL the GOVT; at least, this is how, originally, our FOUNDERS intended and designed our NATION.
We The People, ultimately, are IN CHARGE … which, is the fundamental definition of the word. Alternatively, our NATION is neither an AUTOCRACY, nor an OLIGARCHY, nor an ANARCHY; our NATION is a DEMOCRACY. Our FOUNDERS made sure of that.

Very insightful. If you look at all the different forms of insurance out there, most are a result of fear. Furnace fail, get insurance. Get sick, need insurance. Auto breakdowns, buy insurance. It’s freaking everywhere. I would guess there is even insurance that covers insurance.
My point is that the liberal left, being fearmongers, are the cause of many of the high prices we endure. Any insurance or subsidy or grants or payments relative to a perceived loss, is a distortion of markets which causes price increases.
As a MN county worker I asked if there was a health plan with higher co-pays and overall lower premiums. The union people asked why I would want that. I said, lower overall premiums. They then responded with the fear. What if you get sick and have to go to the doctor every week? This is how the left works. Generate fear, sign you up for loss of freedom, and keep you in line.
Fear is also one of the biggest motivators in marketing. Even the fear of missing out causes many to go spend money for things they may never use, just in case. Sundance is right that conservatives have more security and freedom because they have less fear.

Of note on the Harris one, I point out that her goal was not to get kids into seats to further their education, it was the money the state was being denied.

Me and my three siblings were raised on welfare. It was a embarrassing situation. My mom did not have a car or knew how to drive. We lived in a small town and had to go to a bigger city to shop at the Prairie Market where food was cheaper so we had a better chance to make our food stamps last for an entire month. My mom had to have a friend, neighbor or family member take us because there was no bus service in our small town. We got government cheese, beans, rice and powdered milk as well.
When we picked up a loaf of bread or a gallon of milk in our small town we got looked at differently and some people out right scoffed and said things just above a whisper. We got free lunch at school. Everyone knew who had free lunch because our tickets were a different color.
My Mom had a high school diploma and for four years she worked at the Telephone Company in a big city, however, she kept making poor choices and having babies out of wedlock with different men.
She finally moved back to the small town she was raised in to be around family for help to raise her four kids. My Aunts and Uncles would whisper behind her back about her poor choices. I vowed then and there I would never be on welfare.
I ended up getting a State job handing out welfare where parents were offered high wage high demand jobs supplemented by tax payers or a college education paid again by tax payers. Not one of the people on my caseload ever successfully got off welfare or took advantage of the jobs or education. They were provided bus passes, help with job applications, resumes, job interview training, computer access, cell phones, internet service housing assistance, vouchers for cloths if they got an interview, more benefits when they had another child.
I moved on to IT also with the State and the State now offered an extra hundred dollars for welfare recipients with a child under the age of three for diapers. They also have made it so all students get free school lunches if 65% of the students in school qualify. The application is completed by the parents and told they do not check any of the information provided on the application, other than your child being enrolled in the school district. So parents making $250 thousand a year can lie on the application (and some do) and not have to pay for their kids school lunch.
When I started working in the welfare office over 26 years ago the goal was to reduce poverty and welfare recipients by 50% by the year 2030. Our birthrate has declined, however, our welfare recipients have increased by the millions. Our Headquarters organizational chart has quadrupled.
We are seeing generational welfare, not less. And in sanctuary States all of these benefits are provided to legal immigrants almost immediately and illegal immigrants as soon as they have a child. The parents used to have to learn English to get the benefits for the children. The thinking was this would allow the parents to assimilate easier and get a job, but the courts determined since the benefits were for the child the parents did not have to do this anymore. Also, very few States end welfare after 5 years. In my blue State they transition the adult children (after they get pregnant) to welfare and the parents to Supplemental Security Income (SSI) which is Federal Welfare for people that have not paid into social security for at least 10 years.
The Federal government and blue States have no interest and actively make it easy to remain on the welfare from cradle to grave.

This is a a very complete distinction between the two that mirrors my own impressions, but there is one aspect you didn’t mention (though i’m sure you’re aware of it….)
The most bothersome aspect of liberalism in my mind is that it creates little squadrons of bullies that willingly act against the targets set by liberal “leaders,” then not only excuses the abusive actions of those bullies, but rewards them for their attacks.
This process doesn’t only harm their targets and create societal/cultural disruption, but it also degrades the individual bullies and wastes their potential – they become less than they could have been and, the further they go down that path, the harder it is to walk it back.
So grateful for Sundance & CTH… education and inspiration and fellowship.

I might have believed this theory many years ago. I don’t any more.
Fear, trust, control, self empowerment, to me, are equally likely to prevail among conservatives and liberal.
The Iron curtain, for example, was built on an induced fear, an induced fear embraced by both conservatives and liberals alike. When it came to the iron curtain there was no trust. Today, the iron curtain is gone. The fear of the iron curtain is gone. We now know that the fear which existed in the Iron Curtain days was not justified. The pain inflicted by that iron curtain condition is forgotten. However, those that induced the irrational fear never called to task.
More recently we have the induced fear of covid. You can take out the words “iron curtain” in the preceding paragraph and insert the word “covid” and arrive at similar conclusions.
I don’t think anyone can accurately segregate people according to qualities expressed in the theory.
I have said the f words, fear and fair, are the heart of the Democrat Party. Those two words GUARANTEE approximately 40 % of the popular vote.
That baseline will always be there. If a Republican walked on water, the Democrat Party would point to the wet feet and STILL hold this group.
I believe this is a survival trait a significant percentage of the population carries. This group places a level of trust bordering on faith that someone would never abuse them or mislead them.
It’s not 40% any more. Changing fast.

Absolute on point regarding the cheapness and stinginess of the Democrats…have noticed it for decades. Look at the tax returns for the Biden, for example, almost nothing given to charity…every year. I saw it in my own extended family…called on me to exert my influence in getting them special treatment but never made a donation or even bought a raffle ticket to support the very institution that, thanks to me, accommodated them, All union Democrats…”what can you do for me.”
Now long-retired and income not remotely keeping up with cost of living, but will still continue to give as much as we can to those who have even less than us….if not in cash, in volunteer services. For me, it’s one of the major mind-set differences between political parties that I have witnessed for years.
