It is day #4 in the generally unexpected worst effect impact zone from Hurricane Helene. The area west of Black Mountain, North Carolina, through the eastern portion of Tennessee is facing a major crisis that continues to unfold.
After three days of almost no communication from the region outside what the private sector and social media could put together, North Carolina governor Roy Cooper finally said, “the catastrophic devastation to western North Carolina is like nothing we have ever seen.” Damage to roads, bridges, highways and all infrastructure in the impact zone is extreme. Many areas remain cut-off as the roads and bridges have been destroyed.
Helene’s impacts are severe in parts of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Virginia. However, the Eastern TN/Western Carolina region took the hardest hit as the massive flooding has destroyed towns and literally cut-off the primary access roads and interstates needed to get into the region.
Boone, North Carolina is near many of the worst hit communities and also the headquarters of Franklin Graham’s group Samaritan’s Purse. The orange shirts that show up in almost all areas of severe national disasters. Samaritan’s Purse does a phenomenal job of assistance and staged recovery, and this disaster unfolded right in their back yard.
Multiple private sector groups and individuals have rushed to assist as the state and federal government seem incapable of responding due to the region facing a communication blackout. In addition to the loss of power, cell towers, phone lines, fiber optic cable lines, and satellite receivers in the area have been destroyed. As a result, it took a long time for groups to realize the significance of the problem.
While aide is needed throughout many areas in the southeast U.S, the red circled impact zone is in the worst shape because access to get vitally needed resources, supplies and aid to them is very limited. Several communities remain completely cut-off and are accessible only by helicopter.
I-40 eastbound out of Tennessee is closed as the roads have washed out. I-26 is closed in key areas due to bridge collapses. The North Carolina Dept. of Transportation continues to say, “all roads in Western NC should be considered closed,” even the big ones. Rural, small mountain paths and a few state roads are the only way to get assistance into the area. Thankfully, as we enter day #4, people now realize the scale of the problem.
Folks, we just finished dropping off another shipment of material in Buncombe County. Thanks to your donations, their warehouse is no longer empty.

This is an unfolding crisis of unfathomable proportions. It’s not just the problem of destruction, and in some cases entire towns gone, but also a problem of reaching them to help. A few videos for context below.

CTH coordinated communication resources into the area two days ago to join up with Franklin Graham’s group. People have asked for advice on donations. This is a hard question for this crisis because the big industrial type of relief efforts doesn’t seem to be effective yet. The best on-the-ground support is coming from ordinary people, Youtubers, podcasters, storm chasers and small independent groups; just plain boots on the ground folks responding to what is happening. Many links exist in the comment section on prior posts on this effort. God love em’.
For a large organizational support, I would suggest Samaritans Purse. They will stay around long after the media stops caring.
This next video is a great example of what relief workers literally face when trying to reach people.
Entire roads in North Carolina are washed out and people are without a way to get out of their driveways, no power, little to no communication, AND OUR FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IS DOING NOTHING. OUR MEDIA IS BARELY ACKNOWLEDGING THIS DISASTER.

I know most people still cannot communicate from inside the impact zone. However, if you are in the area, let us know how you are doing.
This is from Wormy:
…”Greetings Treepers, Just evacuated out of area North of Asheville. Up in Va now. Glad to have some creature comforts and my family and friends are all ok. Here’s what I saw happening:
We have had zero communication for 48 hours. We includes citizens, fire dept, 911, rescue, police, troopers, emts, etc. Zero cell phone or land lines. Apparently viper is the only communication and only one channel was available. I’m not sure what has led to this issue but it the single biggest failure so far. This was confirmed at local fire dept. Finally had intermittent cell service around 11am today
Power is slowly coming on. Local Duke and French Broad co op guys were crushing it. They were heroes. Easy areas are coming online. Hard hit areas where trees or floods took out infrastructure are going to take some time. Duke guys I saw today were first organized crew helping
Water is going to be the huge issue. If you have a well and power you’ll be ok; if you are on municipal services it’s going to be a long haul. So many water infrastructure systems wiped out. It’s great to have electricity, it’s impossible to thrive without clean water. This is a slow rolling disaster getting ready to rear its ugly head and unfortunately the mainstream media won’t cover it because the footage won’t be sensational.
Food wise some stocked up a whole lot of people didn’t. Same with gas. Here’s where it is going to start getting crazy. There’s only one sufficient highway into the Asheville area, I 26w. I didn’t see much rolling into town as we drove out. Unless the Calvary is massing somewhere, there is nowhere near the sufficient resources coming into that area. I hope I’m wrong but it’s setting up a situation where people are going to move into desperation soon.
Glad to reply to any other questions. Local am radio really helped. After about 36 hours they were the lifeline for many of us. My family and I are amateur preppers. We would have done fine with our resources if we had stayed. I was amazed at how many were WAY under prepared. Really sad. Hope to head back in a few days. I’ll post an update if a service is available. (link)

This governor is guilty of criminal negligence.
Prayers for the people of North Carolina 🙏
Trust Democrats they said! Everything would be fine they said…
Our govt. looks less and less necessary every day.
It no longer seems interested or capable of solving problems of any kind.
Enemy of the people.
impeach roy cooper
Correct. The weather forecast was for 8 inches of rain. We got at least 28. As of Sunday we saw no linemen or tree removal trucks. There was no evidence of FEMA, National Guard. No one checked for injuries or survivors in my neighborhood except neighbors. Also, thanks to local road repair folks. Fortunately mountain folks are resilient. Rumors of many deaths in Newland, NC due to mudslide. Was listening to Johnson City radio for news. The announcer said we could check the road closings on the internet. What a joke- no power, etc.
“The weather forecast was for 8 inches of rain. We got at least 28.”
And so, do we believe the same people who are forecasting disastrously hot weather for 2030, 2040, and even 2050, when their “forecasts” for weather even 12 hours before are so wrong?
It is what I always say. They make every potential storm a disaster for their sick ideology. When the real one comes, nobody pays attention because nobody longer believes them.
Amen! And we mountain folks usually have red counties when it comes to voting. Thus, why Cooper ignores us.
That was my first thought. It is the region, and I live in Northeast Georgia, that the rats detest.
Evil left at it again.
I have been listening also on wyrd radio 98.9 greenville,sc
I have heard some good info from the 6 station thing broadcasting from ashville but I have heard some dumb stuff from a sheriff and mayor also.
I can’t repeat what I heard them say but trust me it was stupid and could cost lives.
If you have smart leaders lives will be saved.
If you have self serving politicians lives are lost.
If the local community elected the dei types in an emergency or non emergency your life could be at risk.
This is playing out in woke cities in nc and elsewhere.
On top of that you got:
“The state and federal government seem incapable of responding due to the region facing a communication blackout.”
The storms does damage and so do leaders that don’t have a clue.
The the gov and feds want to visit and parade around like their doing what the say. A lie.
People can’t rely on government in nc a prime example.
Odd, ain’t it, that we morons in the country can figger out how to communicate using amateur radio, but the feds cannot.
God bless and empower everyone who has thrown their own lives to the side to assist in whatever way they can.
These people are the best of America.
It is impossible to see the photos and hear the stories and not be overwhelmed by the magnitude of the devastation. One foot in front of the other is the only way to proceed.
For those who are expecting that the creature Biden and FEMA will dig deep to help, I’ll leave this.
Whatever it takes for Ukraine…those reeling from this Biblical catastrophe?
Get stuffed.
https://www.infowars.com/posts/biden-no-more-federal-aid-for-hurricane-victims/
The storehouse has already been given to the illegal aliens.
And good Ole Joe, as he was coming back from vacation, said no more support would be given; enough has already been authorized…..but I bet he’s peddling to get 9-10 billion more to Ukraine. Kamala will do another staged photo with her earbuds not plugged in. She looks busy and writes with what appears to be invisible ink. But don’t worry. Joe and Kamala have given the go to 1,000 FEMA workers to help. They deployed the TN NG to the dang ME over the weekend. I’m beyond furious.
I pray for the residents and those AMERICANS responding. I will highlight AMERICANS every time I bring this up because nowhere are their illegals who have taken from us, going to aid those who had their money stolen from them to provide for their illegal entry.
Is it the wrong time, maybe, but it’s time we AMERICANS tied the lack of support by the Uniparty people in government every single time we have a chance. Never let a crisis go to waste; play by their rules. While doing so, we will roll up our sleeves, both literally and rhetorically, and render aid via help on the ground or through donations to those who are actually helping.
So is the President and his campaigning VP. They care nothing for the people of NC and Tenn. Nothing. If only they cared for Americans the way they care for Ukrainians. Then again, there are no biolabs in eastern Tennessee or western North Carolina that they have used to promote bioweapons so there is no reason to care. The people of Lahaina, East Palestine and Paradise know the pain and angst of suffering while the government and government officials are more concerned with the elections slightly more than a month away.
At least the NC Lt Gov has gone into the war zone with supplies. Maybe Kamala will fly over pulling a snarky banner on her way back to DC from hoity toity fundraisers or Biden will stop over and pick up Cooper for a quick flyover so they can both say they’ve been since neither is campaigning for office now! Who knows, maybe Joe will take Roy to Rehoboth Beach for a weekend on the sand!
It’s amazing how little the corporate media brings up terrible hurricanes when there’s a Democrat in the White House.
Right. They all howled blue murder during Katrina, even saying that GW Bush CAUSED the hurricane. Crickets now.
I saw a Congressman speak on tv this morning. He was asked about aid to the affected states and their people. He stated that FEMA has funds and that Congress will revisit the issue when they return in NOVEMBER. NOVEMBER?!
Congress and the rest of the regime servants have other priorities. Their Blackrock and Vanguard donors are still trying to salvage what they can from Victoria Nuland and Lyndsey Graham’s Ukrainian ‘adventure’.
Wow. To busy looting the treasury for their own accounts to be worried about the real job of the Federal Government.
…and also use the funds for the communist takeover of America.
Not surprising. They are still AWOL after devastating flooding in VT twice in 2023 and once earlier this summer. Government is not your friend.
Where’s “Brownie, you’re doing a heck of a job.”
Awful.
What a worthless POS. This is what happens during selections.
Cooper is ineffective. Why weren’t NG helicopters and trucks and equipment mobilized during the storm? Private citizens using their helicopters to transport people off mountains and GoFundMe’s is great, but where in heck is all the NG? NC is covered with NG and LOTS of helicopters.
I pray Biden/ Harris didn’t tell Cooper to stand down as the affected area is all Trump country. But what else explains the apparent incompetence of Cooper!?
It still boggles the mind how Trump could win N.Carolina in 2020 and a Democrat governor was elected? Maybe it’s something about how the electoral college votes are counted… I dunno. But the 2020 turnout was delayed but the public at the time were starting to become VERY angry with the strange delay until they abruptly called it for Trump.
It’s all so fishy.
Soros bought Cooper and Stein and they cheated.
Truth. ^^
Because it is the working both sides of the coin club at its finest. Roy’s replacement is going to be more of the same. DEI Gestapo, is how he was described by one North Carolinian.
Peter principle on full display. Feckless democrats seem harmless until a disaster lands in their lap
Kinda like at Butler. Murder through deliberate negligence.
Jeff Childers, founder of the Coffee and Covid blog made the same point in his blog this morning…if Western NC isn’t able to get to the polls, then the leftists to the East will surely deliver the state to Kamala!
“I know what you’re thinking. You’re probably thinking about a cryptic government weather program whose name rhymes with an unwieldy, ethereal-sounding musical instrument. You’re probably thinking about how odd and how, well, unnatural is a historically speedy turbo hurricane that in less than 48 hours grew from a tiny tropical storm into one of the largest Category 4 monster hurricanes in history, what they are calling a 1,000-year storm, and which landed on one of the most critical electoral districts in America right before the election.”
https://www.coffeeandcovid.com/p/storm-conditions-monday-september
My husband and I actually just had this conversation. Most of the mountain region in NC is red except for Asheville which is deep blue, and unfortunately the Boone-Blowing Rock area seems to be moving more blue. Two weeks ago our coastal NC area had 1000 year flooding. Our area is very red. So the two regions that are reliable conservative votes both get hit with these disasters. The coastal damage was nothing compared to the mountain region damage but it is odd that both would get hit so close to the election.
Natural disasters aren’t sensitive to national events like voting. Can happen anytime anywhere. Best thing to do is repent and get right with God through faith in Jesus Christ.
The east coast of NC is mostly red.
If you look at the map on the C&C link it shows the breakdown of the electoral map. Ashville is about the only blue city in the west, but several of the bigger cities in the east are as well, and they may carry the state if most of the red counties in the West can’t cast their votes!
Asheville is NOT Trump country. The surrounding areas are but Asheville itself is a left wing loony bin. The city council voted to defund the police and pay reparations awhile back. Bet they wish they had some more cops.
Wish them luck.
Right, Asheville had “punch a nahtzi” graffitti everywhere and ‘art’ up on buildings even before Trump ran for Prez and before people had even heard of antifa. It looked like city murals it was so well done. I saw it with my own two eyes.
You’d be amazed at how many National Guard units are and have been deployed around the globe to flesh out a vastly undermanned and overcommitted active duty military.
It’s an absolutely despicable backdoor national draft.
Must be.
So, it looks like that is something they are trying to hide. They won’t be able to so they may as well start fessing up.
Not to mention that NC has the, or one of the largest Army bases there is, along with many Air Force bases and a lot of NG. Maybe they sent many of them overseas and are trying to keep it quiet or they just don’t care too much because it’s the south. Who knows. They are probably just focused on finishing looting America before their sorry butts are kicked out of office.
Why not use the state’s helicopter? There was an NC governor who used it to fly to his beach home every weekend. The people’s taxes bought the helicopter and put gas in it. Now is the time to use if for humanitarian purposes not simply recreational ones!
8 inches of rain were forecast, 28 were received. But you shouldn’t expect the government to hail anyone out.
Satanic evil.
More Dem willful neglect disguised as incompetency. Gov Cooper, Pete Buttplug, Biden, Harris, et.al are all in on it. Once again, never put a community organizer, social justice warrior or Democrat socialist into power because they have zero skill sets to solve any problems. All they know how to do is grift and money launder. And they use crises to punish their political opponents.
This was posted on GETTR by Chuck Lawler; Cajun Navy has jumped in and Elon Musk is helping provide Starlink….American citizens are awesome when it comes to helping in times of crisis!

May God have mercy on all of us.

Thank you. I donated but only what I could.
Thank you, God bless.
I donated to God’s pit crew. They have 5 gallon buckets full of supplies that you can use your donation for. They are a great charity.
I donate to them every month
Me too…will worry about the CC later…Samaritans purse is amazing and they are ground zero for their headquarters there as well…
Thank you and God bless.
God bless you and I know He will.
I live on the outer edge of FUBAR and we are fine, but my heart breaks for my people to the West.
I am amazed how S. Carolina was spared by all of this. I’m in S. Carolina and in my area (not too far from the border with N.C. and Charlotte) and we definitely got a lot of rain and lots of wind and lots of trees and debris about, I saw no serious interruptions of anything in the area. A tree fell into my back yard and the soil is SUPER-soaked. Perhaps there are other parts of S.Carolina in worse condition but I feel we were VERY very lucky.
No it wasn’t. Upstate hit hard.
I’m still new to the area. What area is “upstate”? I’m in Lancaster County and a short drive from Charlotte.
Upstate is greenville, oconee, Pickens, Spartanburg, union, and other counties NW area of state near GA/NC mtns and borders.
Then I’m even luckier than I thought.
I heard from a neighbor that Greenville is in really tough shape… one of our other neighbors was visiting his daughter there and cannot get out.
I am on Lake Marion and they have DRAINED the lake… preparing for the deluge of water that will come in from the rivers (at least that is what we think they are doing since there is absolutely no news on it anywhere). I was completely shocked this morning to look out the window and see MUD. Boat is literally sitting on mud now.
We had some minor damage during storm but so trivial compared to what Sundance posted above. Complete devastation… I just cannot imagine what the people in that area are going through. Thank God for Samaritans Purse!
The powers in charge dropped the level of Lake Chatuge 8′ before the storm got there. Reminds me of being there in spring before snow melts.
Wow!!!!
I’m in Newberry county SC middle of the state N of Columbia. we did not get spared. Your little corner of the state may have, but from Columbia to Pickens/greenville county is trashed. Day 4 no power. Generators rule the neighborhood. Downed trees and power lines everywhere. I’m on lake murray and it looks to have risen 3 ft in 36-48 hrs. Dam is open, rolling water downstream to make way for what’s coming in. I’m watching my dock poles get shorter and shorter as the water rises. Thank God we are preppers and all is well. Gas is main concern but was able to fill cans today. I’ll just stay right here in my little dead end road cocoon and avoid the chaos out in the world.
Beautiful area.
I’m in Lake Wylie, SC and our community just got power restored yesterday afternoon. Spartanburg and Anderson areas are devastated and the power companies are saying no power until at least Friday. I’m a contract FEMA Inspector and we are on standby to be deployed anytime now but we have to be able to get there. Send prayers and donations to Samaritan Purse.
The farther up 26 you go, the worse the damage. Some areas in NWSC won’t have power for days.
As Sundance said, you can survive for days without electricity. You cannot survive for days without water. Flooding seems to be the #1 thing to take out the water supplies and there was such widespread flooding in TN and NC that it may be MONTHS before water service is restored!
Has our esteemed President of the United States weighed in? If so, I’ve missed it.
He was with the Ukie Z-man promising another $10B of taxpayer monies and then he headed out of town back to his beach.

Yeah. He said he’s done enough. He’s back on the beach to rest up for the weekend
Yeah, he said that they’ve done everything possible. Easy to say on TV when you know there are literally tens of thousands of people who have no power, no cell service, no internet access and no tv. No concern of Joe’s as long as Rehoboth Beach remains open and the ice cream parlor has Tutti Fruitti.
The demented, pedo Joe Biden said he has nothing more to give for hurricaine Helene victims. Oh really? What about sending the Army Corps of Engineers to build some temporary bridges quickly to provide access to areas completely shut off in order to get much needed supplies to them??? JMO
Yes of course. The flood waters took several days to rise to the level they did – Why wasn’t NG equipment mobilized before all the roads washed out? I hate to say it, but Coopers incompetence looks like malfeasance.
The Asheville and Knoxville airports have been opened – why aren’t heavy lifts of equipment happening and temporary road repairs getting done!?!?!? The FL DOT reconnected Sanibel and Captiva within days!!!!!!!!
Looks like DeSantis
should just come and run the recovery efforts..
Florida has a republican governor and his name is Ron DeSantis. The only one who organized aggressive help from a trio of states. help is coming!!!
That was primarily optics to run for President I am pained to report.
The insurance fiasco that has followed Ian by ron!s “pretending not to know” what time it is (his amnesia fueled by hefty PAC “campaign” donations from Big Insurance) will cause many heritage Floridians to have to flee the State or end up in Tent City in the woods behind one of thousands of strip malls.
That was primarily optics to run for President I am pained to report.
Agreed!
They also had a Republican governor who cared about his people. Cooper is lame duck. He’s done his 2 terms of damage so he doesn’t care. Lt. Gov. Robinson is there with supplies but I’m sure the media will find a way to sling some of that red clay mud on him again!
I’ll bet if Mr. Zed And The Banderites had a mansion or three out in the hills, “The Incredible Husk” would jump through his arsehole to straighten things out!
Joe cannot do that – they are busy planning the next pier boondoggle in Gaza.
My Father was in the Corps of Engineers when Camile hit was sent to MS. for weeks. It can and should be done.
A quote seen online –
“This is unbelievable.
XVIII Airborne Corps is located on Fort Bragg (I refuse to call it by that other woke name), a mere 268 miles from Asheville and the worst flooding areas of this Biblical-level tragedy.
The Corps’ capabilities include:
-Extensive medium and heavy lift rotary wing aircraft.
-A theater sustainment command with incredible capabilities for delivery of food, potable water, fuel and construction materials.
-A medical brigade with Level III surgical capabilities.
-An engineer brigade with robust heavy construction assets.
-A military police brigade that can provide traffic control and assist local LE.
-An Airborne Infantry division that has routinely supported disaster relief in years past.
-A world-class command, control and communications HQ capability to make it all work.
NONE OF THAT has been ordered to assist civil authorities? NONE OF IT??????
Fort Bragg has routinely supported domestic disaster relief for DECADES—Katrina, Homestead, you name it. Hell, I myself have a Humanitarian Service Medal for support to Hurricane Fran relief out of Bragg.
Now we can’t do anything for an epic disaster in the SAME FREAKING STATE?
WTF, over?
This goes beyond mere negligence. It must be malicious. Perhaps Kamala and Joe don’t want NC’s rural GOP counties to be able to vote on November 5th?
This is an abomination, and one of the worst derelictions of Presidential duties in US history.

It is a disgrace and if a Republican President was so derelict, he would be attacked nonstop. Yes, it’s Fort Bragg, always will be.
Maybe they simply want most of the heritage mountain people to leave, never to return, so they can make the NC mountain people more to their liking like in Asheville, after it’s all been rebuilt. They seem that evil considering everything else they’ve done.

My buddies in-laws are still trapped up on the mountain in Ashville. They received an air drop of 40 cases of water for the community. Hoping they can ration safely until proper rescue is secured.
A real President could authorize Army Engineers to get in there with road-clearing equipment and temporary bridges. Then the NG could go in with trucks.
JAARS ministry helping w/ air support…
I believe some CTH readers nailed it – Cooper stood down to impede the election as much as possible as the affected area is Trump country. Mark Robison should be outraged.
The entire nation should be outraged, though of course, some are clapping and cheering it on, or pretending not to notice.
Every time there is a tragedy natural or facilitated that disproportionally affects non appreciated Citizens the suffering is milked to the n’th degree.
It’s the flip side of the ” never let a crisis go to waste” coin.
Robinson has been “on the ground”, good man.
I’d say it looks like he is already Governor, he is acting like it, but he has told us he cannot authorize things like Roy Cooper can. He is doing what he can working with the Sheriffs mostly and also just anyone who has any ability to help.
He’s not outraged. He’s in Asheville delivering supplies to the victims. It the Lt. Gov. can get there, what’s the Gov’s excuse? He isn’t even campaigning now. Guess that’s why he doesn’t GAF.
If you don’t watch Ryan Hall, I highly recommend it. The Ya’ll Squad does good things wherever there’s major weather impacts.
For what I can gather, if you donate to them they’ll actually use the money to help people. They’re a 501c3 charity.
The power of water is amazing. In the 70’s a hurricane went up the Sea of Cortez and dumped incredible amounts of rain in the mountains that feed into the Coachella Valley (Palm Springs area). My battalion chief when I started told me first hand accounts of the devastation. That scenario will happen again, but now know there’s hundreds of millions, if not billions, of property in the path of the water.
Ya’Squad is Amazing I have watched them for years. From staying on line giving people much needed information on catastrophic storms and weather and afterwards going to towns that have been devastated with food and meals.also chain saws and in some case just money for someone to get back on their feet.
They really do use your donations wisely.
For upcoming forecasts I’ve been watching Direct Weather (search that in YouTube). He does a good job as well with the forecast. Ryan Hall is amazing and almost always watch his live streams, especially when we have potential for tornados.
What Ryan Hall Ya’ll has grown is amazing and further evidence of why alternative sources outside the MSM are much better. He loves and geeks out on weather, does a great job presenting and is entertaining. The addition of the Ya’ll Squad is amazing and what we should all strive towards – no politics, just helping when help is needed.
It’ll be interesting to see, the Direct Weather “episode” from yesterday (he posts daily and does a good global explain gin the why while showing the forecast models – uses multiple to compare/contrast and explains which ones over or under predict) shows possible lake effect snow around Oct 14th/15th!!! Between him and Ryan Hall, I don’t really need watch the local weather (I do supplement during severe storms but found Ryan Hall’s live streams to be just as good if not slightly better to determine where the tornado actually is)
Hurricane Camile forced sea water up the Mississippi River, where it wound up in Lake Ponchartrain, along with sharks. They thought they had finally caught the last one when I arrived in New Orleans in the Fall of 1970.

“We are now accepting cash/check donations through our PO Box. Checks must be made out to “The Y’all Squad, Inc.”
PO Box 3068
Pikeville, KY 41502
I used a credit card simply because, well, they could sure use the funds now instead of in ten more days.
And all the merch he sells on his ShopRyanHall site goes to help people who are suffering from weather emergencies. If you watch his YouTube channel, you will quickly discover that his predictions are WAY more accurate than most government affiliated weather channels!
So many of the storm chasers are helping, God bless them.
Blessings to SamPurse and all the churches sending volunteers. They have teams enroute to FL also. Bear in mind that seriously cold temps are just a few days in the future for these mountains.
Where is FEMA?
Why are they being funded?
Imagine This:….
Horrific. And only the beginning for them…
Water is very powerful.
8.34 pounds per gallon, ~7.5 gallons per cubic foot = 62.5 pounds per cubic foot. Then add the velocity of the water traveling downhill.
I did my swift water rescue training on the Colorado River on the down stream side of a dam. I’ve been on several “rescues” (no eminent threat, just people stranded on top of a vehicle ). People under estimate what water can do. During my last few weeks before I would ultimately get medically retired, my battalion chief responded to a vehicle accident on I-10. The monsoonal rains were coming down the Chocolate Mountains. Unknown to anyone, the water was flowing at an angle where the water was eating away at the dirt behind the concrete of an over crossing. One unlucky person was driving along when the over crossing collapsed when enough dirt disappeared, ironically his wife was in front of him and she had traveled over it mere moments before he did. He survived, but they had to extricate him from the vehicle on the collapsed “bridge” (here’s a link to an article: https://www.cnn.com/2015/07/20/us/california-interstate-flooding/index.html)
I can’t even imagine how long it’ll take to get the infrastructure repaired. Be curious how many towns/residences are abandoned because some roads are low priority repair compared to others.
Truly devastating.
Right out of a horror movie
Around Brevard, NC.
I was watching as Ryan Hall and a fellow meteorologist spotted a very strange, never before seen anomaly on the western side of the storm as it was maybe 50 miles from landfall.
What exactly that was needs to be discussed and examined.
Can you discuss this further and link any discussion. Thank you.
The still image on that video (on youtube before hitting play) – and at 0:43 in the video – is representative of exactly what I love so much about our NC/TN mountains. Nothing but picturesque in one’s entire field of view.
This is a big part of what attracted those early settlers to move west from the eastern plains areas. It was just too beautiful to ignore.
Anybody who watches that video, be advised, some of it just might make you tear up.

ONE mine in the area northeast of Asheville, N.C. supplies ALL the quartz for the entire planet to manufacture computer chips!?!
“In March, a Wharton professor who studies artificial intelligence and start-ups claimed on X, “The modern economy rests on a single road in Spruce Pine, North Carolina. The road runs to the two mines that are the sole supplier of the quartz required to make the crucibles needed to refine silicon wafers.”
Ethan Mollick noted at the time, “There are no alternative sources known” if supply disruptions were seen in Spruce Pines. …
…As of Monday morning, Mollick’s worst fears could be realized as Google Traffic data shows road closures around the Sibelco mining facilities and across the entire region….”

Unless this quartz mine somehow contains some kind of electric properties I am unaware of (besides just being “ultra pure”, there are plenty of places in the U.S that contain abundant quantities of pure quartz. including mines in Arkansas (I have a degree in geology)
Thank you for the information!
I thought the implication very odd, i.e. that regular quartz could not made “ultra pure” somehow.
Right you are. Arkansas has huge quantities of quartz.
Agree. And I don’t know about semiconductors (I probably should), but synthetic quartz is used abundantly for various things.
And there are what, about 20 major variants of quartz? This mine only produces one type, best I can gather.
Ok. Turn the sh!t off. This societal construct no longer excited me as it sits now anyway.
There you have it.
I’m 100% going to say that part of this storm was manipulated to devastate this part of the country.
This is interesting. Does the FED.gov want control of this mine?
We have family stuck in Swannanoa and we were planning to head to a family re-union there in a few weeks. the town is basically gone. Besides no water or power the problem of deperation and looters nows exists. Luckily our family still has the house – but that that may also make them a target.
Please pray and ask you church to support Samaritan Purse as they are coordinating relief. https://samaritanspurse.org/article/pray-for-those-in-helenes-path/?_gl=1*rptlxf*_gcl_au*NjQxMzIwMDYyLjE3Mjc3MDU1NzE.
Swannanoa, at the base of Mount Mitchell (and other giants). I can only imagine the runoff those folks experienced.
I also have extended family who have lived in that town for a century or two.
As an NC native, witness to countless hurricanes in m7 70+ years, I am still reeling from the fact that our mountains (collectively with TN) have suffered so severely from a hurricane, of all things. Here in central NC, Much closer to hurricane terority, it was pretty much just another stormy day. It just blows my mind.
State troopers and some police departments (like cell phone users) depend on comm boxes on tall towers scattered through the mountains for first-line communication and data reporting (2-way). Many of those towers were apparently (obviously) hit. That kind of damage is another thing that could take weeks or months to repair completely.
Communication towers are yet another thing that should be upgraded/hardened, everywhere.
But how? Airwaves are by far the easiest means of broadcasting, receiving and relaying communicaton.
Kneejerk answer might be satellite (e.g. Elon). But that’s a whole ‘nother cost level AND risk factor.
Yet hundreds of billions for the Ukraine and illegals.
If you can’t see it now, you’re an idiot. Or worse.
Exactly!!!
If you’re broke, you shouldn’t give money to help others. Our 32 trillion+ (I’m sure someone knows the current number) in national debt tells us we’re broke.
You don’t buy a “friend” on the other side of town a firearm to attack his neighbor when you don’t have enough money to pay your bills and your house needs critical repairs.
Hard not to suspect election interference See Coffee and COVID blog by Jeff Childers Is it just another random attack by Mother Nature or are The OverLords in overdrive. I question The Governor’s ineptitudes it seems suspicious and smells fishy!
Has anyone, governors and mayors… called the President Biden….? He is still POTUS. Not Harris….and needs to get out of his beach chair.
At state and local levels…have any ‘disaster declarations” been made?
The American people need and want answers on the delay of help for our brothers and sisters in those affected regions.
This is Katrina, all over again?
What in the hell is going on in America!?!?!? We can’t seem to able to wipe our own azz anymore!!!!!!
WORSE than Katrina, because of location and political bent.
Non of those people in the executive branch have been anything they pretend.
I’ll keep saying it. We have to save ourselves. The 4th Reich federal government is out to destroy us. Good, decent folks are showing up, helping fellow Americans. Hearing that damage will exceed $100 billion. Ponder this. In late 60s the US military seeded the clouds in SE Asia to enhance the monsoons, to flood the rice paddies. Tie in the government spraying our skies with God knows what, the HAARP antenna in Alaska, unprecedented hurricanes devastating areas far from the coastlines, and weather oriented media outlets informing its audience hours before Helene made land that Asheville was at risk.
The weaponry being deployed on us is beyond normal human comprehension. And if we raise this possibility in public, it is dismissed the product of delusion, conspiracy bunk . There are no coincidences when it comes to the 4th Reich eliminating MAGA Americans or its leadership.
They really do want to ruin the families of MAGA and put you in camps – they are NOT joking.
They better pack a lunch and a toothbrush.
Don’t you know Mark Elias is all over this, preparing to use the emergency situation, in coordination with the DOJ, et al., to eliminate the vote security in the affected states, and inject enough ballots to flip them.
Prioritize equity. Needs are secondary, at best.
A good report
Valle Crucis is cut off. There is only one road in through there, so two bridges washing out severs all supplies until temporary bridges are built.
Kamala is on the case … 🙄
Everything is fake, everything is staged and we have a population incapable of discernment.
Thought bubble over her head: “How do you spell ‘hurricane’?”
She’s breaking down the hurricane affected by race, gender, sexual preference, etc. to see where the aid will go forst, second, third, etc. This might take a while.
Once again, locals are the main responders, with a few exceptions such as SP and Red Cross, no surprise there.
In addition to all of this, it appears a mine near Spruce Pine, NC is the sole producer of ultra pure Quartz for crucibles that all global semiconductor production relies on. The one road in/out of this mine has been completely washed out which could end the manufacturing of computer chips as we know it for some time. Concern for the regional human population and their well being comes first and foremost, but apparently this mine is a BIG DEAL when it comes to global semiconductor chip manufacturing.

Various members have already mentioned how rural areas – i.e. what would seem to be TRUMP Territory – seem to be ignored whenever a crisis hits.
It has not been sufficiently appreciated that the political party controlling the White House is the same party, which has applauded with standing ovations* their constant support for Infanticide, and therefore is a party, which will gladly and with glee allow possible voters against them to die and suffer.
* A reference to the New York state legislature, DEM controlled, who gave themselves a standing ovation for expanding abortion to include outright infanticide.
They ignore everywhere in America, even their own base. Look at Hawaii. Joe Biden gave ’em $700 and washed his hands of it, after telling them about his kitchen fire of course. They don’t care about Americans at all. It almost seems like they don’t need your vote. Huh, strange.
Thank you for sending comms!!!
“CTH coordinated communication resources into the area two days ago to join up with Franklin Graham’s group”
Wester NC IS Trump country. You think recovery may be slowed to prevent them voting?
My parents are in Cedar Mountain area just south of Brevard & west of Hendersonville. I’ve had limited comms since no power, main roads washed out. Long time treepers so prepared with generator & food but that won’t last much longer. Hoping they can evacuate soon. Prayers please!
Praying …
Ok. This pisses me off. Got off the phone this AM with one of my bubbas in a heavy lift helo squadron (USMC) based in the Carolinas. They have been recalled and on “standby” since late Friday night.
They have not flown any missions at. These guys have the capabilities to perform hundreds of sorties per day carrying 30-40,000 lbs of water, food equipment each time. They don’t need airfield support, they can put the stuff down in a Walmart parking lot for Pete’s sake.
My buddy is only with one squadron, there are three more just like his in the Carolina’s. All marines, all ready to run toward the fire.
Fing bureaucrats need a severe beating about the head and shoulders to get their brains removed from their anus.
Unbelievable.
“Never let a good crises go to waste” This is what results when the Alinsky gang sells their souls to the greater evil
“FUBB” as another Treehouser posted. We blew straight past SNAFU and FUBAR so fast no one could read the sign.
The price you pay if your area didn’t vote their way.
I once thought such pettiness in government was impossible…. that things like addressing emergencies and sending help are at least a great way to help your side “look better.”
No. The current Democrats and deep state factually want us dead. And they feel very comfortable in this position as their supporters also want us dead. I can no longer imagine “they just don’t know.” They believe what the media says and believe we deserve whatever we get… which is nothing.

It’s hard to believe ANY North Carolinian will now vote for candidate and current VP Harris who’s been shamefully MIA during this disaster. The Dems blew it and they’ll lose NC as a result.
The whole Country is watching a dysfunctional candidate showing her true colors.
Not meaning to sidetrack this important topic, but this just came to me and I wanted to put it out there before I forget it (hey, I’m old).
The list of proposed cabinet members on this site had Jeb! slotted for FEMA Director. I would propose… Mike Rowe
He is a man that understands what motivates “people who get things done” and I think he wouldn’t tolerate much political BS. Jeb Bush is political to the core, and judging from the way his campaign imploded I have to question his leadership. I would not work my ass off for him, that’s for sure. And can 1 in 100 people on this site (who are more informed than most) even name the current FEMA Director? Where is he? (OK, just looked it up, it’s Deanne Criswell)
Not so with Mike Rowe. He will inspire the people who matter in a crisis response like this, the selfless “people who get things done,” as well as people who donate $ and resources from afar.
OK, back to the regular discussion.
It’s worse than I thought! Looking at FEMA website, their “Strategic Plan” lists GOAL 1: Instill equity as a foundation of emergency management LINK
Is Deanne Criswell a DEI hire like Kimberly Cheatle ? I guaran-damn-tee you that Mike Rowe would not state this as GOAL 1
Back in 1979 when Frederick hit our area ….we could not drink local water…Coca Cola sent in carton water which could be picked up at the Fire Station. I guess it would be a stretch to expect this from Coca Cola today. SAD.
Within their ESG/DEI governance papers, effectiveness of disaster relief is probably seen as a sign of white supremacy.

@tickerguy
BTW you know all those trunked radios the IDIOTS went to at the various PDs and FDs? They’re worthless when the network has no power because you idiots put the data center where it can flood. The old-style p-p radios? They work fine and you can relay with 2. YOU WERE STUPID.

Yet another “who’s in charge” moment.
Asheville
Karl Denninger
Comms aren’t that complicated these days. Starlink terminals are currently $300 but let’s say you pay the full-boat former $600 price for them. You buy 1,000 of them between the city and county; that’s $600,000. Now add a $300 1kw generator for each and have a rotating fuel supply well away from the floodplainthat is part of the rotation for your police cars so its nice and fresh. Stick all of them in a warehouse against just such a need. Deputize 1,500 people that can and will operate and protect them, including bringing their own arms and ammunition and pass an ordinance that if in use in an emergency anyone attempting to steal or tamper with them can and will be shot, and the city accepts liability for any attempted civil suit over same.
Now you pay someone with competence (fancy that!) to be prepared to engineer where those go and how they interconnect, if at all, including multiple high-gain directional antennas and external WiFi APs to attach to each, so as to provide coverage to the city and surrounding environs. Will you hit everyone and everywhere? No, but you can identify where roads and bridges are likely to be damaged or destroyed and thus who will get cut off, and you can cover the area sufficiently. Each will support a hundred or so users in this fashion so do the work and the math. Modern cellphones all support “WiFi calling” so if you can get such a signal into an area people now have limited but functional communications — SMS and phone calls, specifically. Blackball all video attempts and similar so you don’t have some chucklehead trying to watch Pornhub on it and screw his neighbors. There’s 100,000 people covered which in a community of 3-4x that means basically everyone has something until you can get the regular plant back in full operation.
Is this a perfect solution? No, but its better than no solution and its cheap by comparison to alternatives and works every time; the hardware costs about a million bucks all-in and the service is zero until you need it, then it has a $150,000 per month cost. Yes, that’s real money, but in the grand scheme of things its small-ball for a county and city. At the same time you get up the *** of the telecommunications providers and demand they resolve all single-point failures and prove they have or you will revoke their easements and business licenses, which as a City Council (in concert with the County Commission and its administration) you can do.
You also would have analyzed where the water plant processing, pumping and control systems are and remedied those that some former chuckle**** put in the floodplain! Can you prevent main breaks and such when bridges and roads get washed out? No, but you can put isolation valves in appropriate places so you can close those and prevent collapse of the entire system. You can also get up the *** of the electrical providers (Duke in this case) and engage in a relentless pressure campaign so they aren’t chuckle***** either. Can you fix all of that? No, once again but you can stop impeding things like keeping tree fall lines away from power lines which many municipalities in fact do actively obstruct in the name of being “green” and then when there’s a storm they act all surprised that trees fell on the power lines and took them out.
Of course the City Council didn’t do any of that and now the entire f****** thing — power, water and comms — is offline and likely will be for weeks.

Found in the bin… 🙁
I thought I missed some of the “language”…
Yup….
My husband and I had darn near the same ideas as you. If we can figure it why can’t they…
They can but they won’t…
