Recently almost lost someone to Dengue Fever. Trip to MX in Feb. this year. Platelets dropping 30,000 a day–not even time to get private medical air transport to get us out of MX and back to states. Commercial travel was out of the question. Spent 4 days in hospital, rooms arranged for family to be present (a requirement in MX). Doctors did a great job. One was infectious disease specialist and one was critical care doctor. Very dedicated. Language barrier was a challenge but those two doctors did speak “understandable” English and I speak a few words of Spanish. Dengue can be deadly and it was a frightening ordeal. A MOSQUITO BITE! There was an outbreak of it at the time in an area close by (didn’t know or would have taken even more precautions than just using repellent). At any rate, fairly common in tropical climates. Florida knows Dengue.
By the way, had to pay in full before release from hospital. They had personal ID’s held in admin and not given back until, literally, on the way out the door. I asked them what happens if you don’t/can’t pay? They said, “We notify the government.” Good plan, no?????
I like their medical plan. I would think The cost of medical care under that plan is probably much lower than here??

3 & 1/2 hour ambulance ride to a level three medical facility, the hospital bill, and the hospital doctors which were separate, L E S S T H A N $16,000 in U.S. Dollars. Can you imagine what this would have cost here?
Note: We kept all receipts, “facturas”, and to our surprise, we were reimbursed by our insurance company for almost all expenses. Normal deductibles applied.

It’s not uncommon to hear of a case of plague in the mountains around Lake Tahoe and other northern California mountain areas because of infected squirrels and other wildlife. At least once a year the local news will mention someone was infected with it after mountain hiking or some such activity.
