Edward Gibbon’s monumental six-volume treatise “History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire“ traces the nature of Western civilizations from the time of the collapse of Rome to the fall of Byzantium. Among the many slices of culture he charts is slavery.

Gibbons noted that slaves were dressed differently from citizens. What they wore immediately distinguished them. In addition, the basic law of supply and demand determined what was available to them, and it certainly was not fine linen, embroidered cottons, or specially imported silks.

In some circumstances, slaves were not permitted clothes at all. 

Today’s verse states when you came to Christ you were clothed in a new self. How one is clothed is often discussed in the Bible.

At the time of the fall of Adam and Eve, God Himself clothed the couple in garments He made of animal skins. In Galatians 3:27, as many as were “baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” Psalm 132:9 discusses being “clothed with righteousness.” The Holy Spirit dwelling within believers clothes them with power (Luke 24:49). The Christ-follower will one day put on immortality (1 Corinthians 15:50-55). 

Pastor Ray Stedman writes, “When I get up in the morning, I put on my clothes, intending them to be part of me all day to go where I go and do what I do… Put on Jesus Christ when you get up in the morning. Make Him a part of your life that day. Intend that he go with you everywhere you go.” Dress yourself as a child of the King, not in the tatters of a slave.

Be distinguishable from the world around you by your humility, kindness, and compassion, as you give consideration to the messages your choice of clothes relays.

 Pray for people representing Christ in high places to have “wardrobes“ that do not draw attention to themselves, either positive or negative, but that represent righteousness and purity.

Good morning all!

Thought today is a question.

Could you imagine being in President Trump’s shoes and having to pick staff and cabinet from what he has to choose from?

A choice of the lesser of evils? Attempting to avoid Judas’ and at the same time appeasing the GOP which he has to have to get re-elected?

Finally got my cable internet back.

Wind came through and blew trees down on lines. We were without power for 26 hours. that’s the 6th time this year we lost power and I’ve had it with that BS.

It finally motivated me to get off my ass and do what I have said I would do. I went to Menards and ordered a Generac 26 Kw standby generator with transfer box.   Scheduled to be delivered NLT Aug. 6th. Will have my nephew Ryan Green install it. He’s a certified electrician that has installed dozens of such units and the guy that does all my other electrical work.

No more going without water, stove, A/C. No more keeping jugs of water to pour in the tank of the toilets so we can flush. No more worrying about our frozen and refrigerated foods. No more dragging out the generator and running extension cords to my essential stuff. No more BS! The generator will provide enough power so we will not have to alter or life style in any way. 

The thing cost me $7,012.00 after the 11% rebate. But at this point in my life it will be worth every penny.

During the additions and renovations I had already had a 1″ NG line run to the location under the meter box where it will be installed. I forget how much that detail cost and it was done with other gas line work so I can’t look it up. But I estimate I’ll have about $9,000 in it when it’s all said and done. And it will be worth every penny to us.

Night before last my neighbor Steve and I were up sitting on the porch of his barn as we tended our generators and we heard a big crack and thump about 01:30 in the morning. I went to see what caused the noise but in the dark couldn’t see a thing. When it was light we saw it. The big Red Maple near the SW corner of my neighbors house to the south had split in half.

Apparently the big blow the night before had started the split and about 24 hours later in a very light breeze it gave way. He was very lucky. It fell so it just missed his house. That end of his house is where the bedrooms are and Anthony and his wife and their two 4 y/o girls were in bed there. 

I am very happy that I had the two trees taken out. Still have some more tree trimming work to be done but that will happen in the fall once they go dormant.

PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD

Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.

I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.

I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.

I pray on the Gospel Shoes of Peace. I choose to stand in the shoes of your good news, and on the firm foundation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the solid eternal rock. All other ground is sinking sand, I pray that I will not slip or fall, but that my feet would be firmly fitted on your lordship, my Lord Jesus. I choose to stand on you, so that the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus, the eternal Rock of Ages. I receive your holy peace now my Lord, from the sole of my feet to the crown of my head, in my Lord Jesus name.

I pray the Shield of Faith into my hand now. As I take up the shield of faith, I ask that you might extinguish every dart and arrow that is launched from the enemy to take me down spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally, and every attempt of the enemy to destroy my joy. I ask that my faith in you would make it flame out. Extinguish every flaming arrow that would come against me, my life, my family, my home, or my ministry. May my faith always be out in front of me like a shield. Give me the courage to “faith my fears” by choosing to walk by faith and not by sight, in my Lord Jesus name.

I pray on the Helmet of Salvation, that you might protect my mind from the thoughts that can lead me astray. I choose to take every thought captive, and arrest all intentioned ideas and motives that would harm others, or distract me from your holy will for me. I submit every captured thought to the Lordship of my Lord Jesus Christ, and ask that you would imprison those thoughts that are not of you my Lord. Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.

Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.

May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.

With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.

Thank you my Lord, for the spiritual weapons of armor and prayer that you have given me. It is written no weapon formed against me shall prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses me. 

Thank you Father God, my Lord Jesus and the Holy Spirit, that I am more than a conqueror in my Lord Jesus. I pray all of this in the mighty name of my Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ, Amen.

Remember when TV was belly-laughter fun? And you didn’t have to worry about your young children walking into the room and being exposed to trash?

R.I.P. Bob Newhart. You were one of a kind with your bone-dry one liners. Great match-up with Suzanne Pleshette back in the day.
