I have had 3 close family/friends placed on psychiatric drugs for depression.
One ended up institutionalized after devolving from depression to bipolar behavior to becoming physically uncontrollable. She died within a year of being institutionalized.
Another became increasingly violent, but family was able to tag team and keep her at home until she died within a few years.
A third was doing okay until her Dr decided to “try a new medication.” Within a week she became uncontrollable, wouldn’t eat. Tried to stop the meds cold turkey but got worse. Ultimately admitted to a care facility where it took over a year to wean her off all meds and get her back home. She’s moody, as she has been all her life, but functions normally.
My son went through a serious OCD episode during his middle school years. School social worker strongly encouraged medication, insisting it was going to get worse and he could harm himself. I refused, and spent hours talking, helping him learn to calm himself and manage the impulses trying to take over his brain. It was an exhausting year for both of us, but he emerged much more self aware and confident. As a middle aged adult, he still has to work at staying balanced, but with the help of his endlessly patient wife has a great family, great (though stressful) job, and has never taken any psychiatric drugs.
Our health care system has been under pharmaceutical capture for decades, leading to the demise of our physical and mental health.
Pills cannot replace parenting.
To be fair, parenting doesn’t always help. Also have a now-adult child who chose to self medicate with drugs and alcohol and remains unreachable. I’m afraid some just are born badly wired, but psychiatric meds generally don’t help.
Many times the younger people are mixing the psychiatric medications with other substances, which negates whatever good the drugs may have done. But you probably knew that.
You see parents with three kids, and only one exhibits the “bad” behavior, parents are limited in what they can do.
And the so called counselors at school actually encourage the kids to do what is harmful…by telling them they don’t have to listen to their parents. So the kids don’t…and often get absorbed into bad cliques…where they engage in dangerous activities and other drugs.

Always a question. Mine were all born between ’75 and ’85, so missed the unbelievable shot schedule of more recent years.
Oldest had severe and prolonged swelling from the DPT so after the first dose that child and subsequent kids were exempted from that particular one. Fortunately this preceded the school districts militant stance on vaccines.
I misunderstood the anti-vaxxers and thought they were all nutty. I had no idea the barrage of injections they were giving to infants, from birth.

We cannot separate drugs and alcohol. Alcohol kills more folks worldwide from its various negative consequences than all the other hard drugs, combined.
I was ethanol challenged from 11 to 38 and was forced to take ADHD meds in the 90s in jr High, then was nearly paralyzed playing football at 15 leading to a couple decades of prescription opioids, used as directed (which will get you, just slower).
If there is hope for me to be clean 7 years on alcohol and 5 years from the opioids, there is hope for dang near everybody.

In the early and mid 90’s, there was a huge shift to social workers as being ‘counselors’ and having the ability to ‘suggest’ medications…and offer referrals and psychiatrists did less and less psychotherapy…that was when my seriously ADHD kids got into trouble and were failed…by the medical industry and the school industry…with these damn liberal social workers. We had a fabulous team that did so much that was effective, for my kids….then the insurance companies got in the way. Their bottom lines flourished and my kids, to put it mildly, fell by the wayside.
Had a close friend whose son developed some OCD issues as he entered adolescence. On the advice of their pediatrician, they started him on a medication to “help” keep him calm, which, of course, led to another medication for the depression caused by the first med, which, then, led to another medication for the anxiety…etc. He is now is his mid 30s and still lives at home, where he writes graphic novels and smokes dope. His parents thought they were doing the right thing – but as we have all sadly learned, the doctors are owned by Big Pharma and the answer to EVERY problem is another pill!
I believe that these drugs harm a lot of people. I also believe that the right drug for an individual can help immensely. It takes close observation and patience to find the right drug and dose. Instead of one dose for all it should be attenuated for that individual. This is rarely done. I had a Dr. who would do this and educate himself on these drugs and not just what the companies would tell him. My teenage son was ADD among other things. This Dr. tested his blood for lithium and found he was low. He put him on lithium and Prozac and he was a different kid. Was normal and happy. I read the pkg. insert on lithium and it was scary but evidently he needed it. The problem was my ex wife didn’t want him on anything. And he being a teenage male thought he was cured when the RX ran out. A couple of years later he came to me and wanted to see that DR again and get those meds. He remembered how well he felt. He went back on them and felt great but didn’t refill the RX. The Dr. told me that his biggest problem is getting young males to stay on the meds. Again, this Doc was very careful and knowledgeable about these drugs.
I am no fan of the pharma companies and don’t trust them.
We have a lot of tools available today to diagnose and treat numerous conditions. They can be life savers.
Unfortunately, medicine has become very rote, and few medical professionals take the time to keep up with the most current drug info. I get it. They are under pressure and “orders” to follow protocols prescribe particular drugs, but everyone reacts to every chemical differently.
So glad for your son that he found a Dr that is attentive to his individual needs.
We all need to take personal responsibility for our well being.
The utilitarian theory at work…do the least for the most. Most of these big health care groups have algorithms that must be followed or they need a variance to go on a different path. .some instances, they cannot do what they know will work.

Most likely a good supplement regimen and diet changes would have helped him tremendously. The medical community is corrupt and practically useless, except for maybe fixing broken bones. God help those stuck in the medical industrial complex, best advise is to stay out of it by making changes in your life to your health through what you eat and supplements.
Trauma medicine comes closest to getting it right… after getting stabilized – GTFOOT!

LR: Thanks for the article. I am familiar with PANDAS. The infectious disease hypothesis is interesting, but very difficult to prove. Living in a house with mold is another suspected cause. I think that the toxic environment at school and online (smartphones) is better explanation for troublesome behavior in kids than is the infectious disease explanation.

AT&T said it delayed disclosing the incident in response to “national security and public safety concerns,” noting that some of the records included data that could be used to determine where a call was made or text message sent. AT&T also acknowledged the customer records were exposed in a cloud database that was protected only by a username and password (no multi-factor authentication needed).

A lot of the real work of re-forming the Republican Party, to make it the A1st, MAGA Party we need it to be, is our of control of the National Party; it is the 50+ State Parties, each of which is ‘like’ a franchise; while the State parties recieve funding support from the National party, they are by no means subservient TO it.
Each State Party has a State Chair, beholden to that State Parties Executive Committee.
The real power in the R party is concentrated in these 50 State Party Executive Committees, and Lara, as National Chair has no authority over them.
WHY have we seen PDJT so often endorse RINO candidates over MAGA primary challengers? Because he knows the State Party Executive Committee can/will detirmine primary election outcomes, with far more conclusive influence on the outcome, than his endorsement.
In short, we can NOT look to “Trump” to purge our State Republican Parties of the entrenched RINOS that sit on these Executive Committees, and wield enormous power.
That task falls on US.

Yo, it would be easy enough to say concentrate on the “go, no-go joe” charade at you own peril ……. but the in-your-face-dangerous-truth is that it is our Constitutional Republic that is in imminent peril.
Now that all America has seen the communists making the USA’s domestic and foreign policy decisions, it should be all patriotic hands on deck to prevent WWIII…. before the communist biden administration pushes the USA into it.
Thank God, our supreme court has the Constitutional mechanism to do it quickly by removing the illegally certified biden and his administration and we have President Trump waiting in the wings to step into the Executive Branch as the lawfully certified President, and restore sanity to the USA domestic and foreign policies.
