He uses polling data and the results of past presidential elections to make his case. To me, this is a stupid, but predictable article. Polling is highly questionable and writers, I won’t call him a journalist, like Barone consistently focus on the popularity of candidates. Not policy. Not the current state of the country is and what each candidate will do to actually improve our country or make it worse.
It’s just too easy for writers like Barone to encourage a food-fight about the candidates in terms of personality, accusations, true and false, polling, true and false, media hype, mostly false, etc. So that’s what we get. Which side and their supporters can create hype to get voters to vote the way they want.
I guess it just takes too much effort for aging writers like Barone to focus on the real issues about what is happening to our country and which candidate and/or party is best suited to solve our problems based on their policies.
Barone provides a good example, IMO, of tabloid writing supporting tabloid elections.

I found this quite upsetting. I have usually agreed with President Trump’s hardline stands on immigration, and putting America First. But I am stunned that he is wanting to automatically give green cards to all foreign students who graduate from any US college — even a junior college. He is sympathetic to foreign grads, esp from China and India, who want to stay in the U.S. Really?
I was just reading on CTH in the comments about people who know so many qualified young professionals who have been laid off in their field, and can’t find anything. As it is, H1B visas and outsourcing have kept qualified American graduates from getting good professional jobs in their field because it is cheaper for businesses to hire the H1B foreign grads. Plus, I’ve read that especially in the IT field, many departments run by Indian bosses hire only Indian employees, and no one seems to be highlighting this. (And what about vetting?) If this is true, I am really disappointed. Someone posted that it sounds like a Paul Ryan/Chamber of Commerce deal. Am I missing something??

I think it’s a great idea – people trained that reach the top of their technical, scientific education, with bright, innovative ideas that want to stay in the United States and create new industries, hire American citizens – that’s kind of the starting point of the American dream, not illegally sneaking into the country to live off of others hard work.
There are two types, the legal immigrant from India, China, or wherever, stays here and creates jobs or goes back and creates those jobs in competing nations and then the other type who come here to simply take without adding to the bottom line of the national story.
President Trump was clearly drawing the distinction between the two and those tech people in the podcast, the venture capitalists that fund new enterprises, REALLY liked that distinction.

I feel like President Trump is pandering to the CEOs in an election year — whereas in 2016, he was championing Americans who were laid off from places like Disney and Boeing and having to train their own foreign replacements. (And I’ve heard in the past that some of the Boeing mechanical issues have been from using bargain priced Indian engineers, and American engineers have had to straighten it out.) Also, what happens when those green card folks from China go back home and take our technological secrets with them? Haven’t we had those issues before?
