Read an article about it today which suggested that Saudi Arabia was using the Petro-dollar as a bargaining chip in their National Security / Israel – Palestine Two State Solution, etc. Agreement with the USA. However, it also likely means we won’t know the vote tallies from Michigan until at least Thanksgiving while they wade through a mountain of mailed ballots and attempt to verify signatures. Mailed ballots themselves are the problem and must be made illegal in all states except for deployed military members. American citizens living abroad should have to go to a consulate/embassy to cast their vote in person just like Mexican citizens had to do a couple weeks ago.

At the DC RNC meeting President Trump floated the idea of replacing the income tax with higher customs duties. At one time our nation operated on customs duty. In fact during the Jackson administration the war debt was retired and our nation’s treasury ran in the black, notwithstanding the NY customs collector stealing a vast sum and absconding to Europe.
Currently customs revenue covers the entire operation of the Federal government, excepting the military. Whether a smaller government and military could be financed solely with import tariffs is a proposal that warrants exploring, and I hope Sundance will apply his broad knowledge of the economy to such an analysis, should President Trump continue to propose it.
I had 30 years with US Customs, in a range of positions ( low level; in the field), and I will address a few points I see on other sites, which indicate an imperfect understanding of customs duty, entry processing, enforcement, etc.
This obviously is a vast topic, and I can’t begin to address it here; but I will say the US could collect a lot more Customs duty with better enforcement, targeting, analysis, and fraud penalties. Yes, Customs hates to issue fraud penalties. In fact in 1996 the ADDIC (Assistant District Director for Inspection and Control) in my port ordered me to stop pursuing them. When I asked for the order in writing, he merely ordered FP&F to decline to issue any fraud penally I submitted (19USC1592). I still submitted them though, that is my responsibility to the American people, to protect the revenue.
Here are some points to keep in mind:
People who argue against higher tariffs will often cite the Smoot-Hawley Act of 1930 (high, protectionist tariffs) as a contributor to the Great Depression. Yes, its likely someone will bring this up. There are books and papers on this topic, but it is outside my expertise to express an opinion as to whether it helped or hurt. Imports and exports dropped substantially, that’s for sure. One problem with the “Smoot” arguments (for or against) is that in those days merchandise was appraised then the duty was levied on that value. Collectors of Customs (appointed by the President until c1965) appraised high. In fact until the very late 1800s, the collector got a piece of the collected duty, which enabled future president Chester Arthur, collector of the port of New York, to make the modern equivalent of $1 million a year for about 7 years. In any case, in modern times we use “transaction value” (the amount paid or payable), and not appraisal as was previously done. This means that “Smoot” arguments/analysis have a problem comparing duty rates from different times, when different ports were not consistent. In sum, ignore “Smoot”; too many unknowns.
There are other sources of Customs revenue that remain untapped. California, for example, has been levying customs duty on imports for decades. This is a violation of our Constitution, which prohibits states from levying duty or tonnage tax. California calls it an import user fee, but the California Franchise Tax Board has a customs department. That’s a clue. With interest, I am sure California owes billions to Treasury (there go the reparations!).
The harmonized tariff schedule (if you are on the spectrum like me you will love this book) has a Column 1 and a Column 2 (much higher) duty rate, with 2 being somewhat punitive. China was on it until, I think, the Reagan administration. Well, just put them right back on it! Also, many countries are granted low or free duty rates, under things like GSP (General System of Preferences). Speaking of China, they are practiced at duty evasion. Transshipping thru other countries like Mexico, double invoicing, etc. These frauds have been basically winked at for 30 or so years
More use of anti-dumping and countervailing duties add to the revenue stream also.
Whether or not President Trump decides to go forward with this idea, I hope he will require CBP fulfill its responsibility to protect the revenue.

Super intelligence by 2027. AI cost has fallen 1000x from 2022 to 2024. It will continue. It’s not one exponential growth, it’s three, all compounding together. Paper extrapolate current numbers assuming no algorithmic improvements. So likely more powerful than this optimistic estimate. We can’t even stop it, or else it goes into the CCP’s hands.

Committee of Public Safety in the French Revolution – HISTORY CRUNCH:
“The Committee of Public Safety was a significant organization of the French Revolution that involved several key people and events. Formed in April of 1793, it was established by the National Convention, the revolutionary government of France at the time. In the months before its creation, French revolutionaries were facing intense pressure from foreign threats and invasion by surrounding nations loyal to Louis XVI. As a result, many members of the National Convention became increasingly paranoid from the perceived threat of external and internal challenges to the revolution. To combat these threats, the National Convention established the Committee of Public Safety, and provided it with sweeping powers.
The Committee of Public Safety was led by Maximillien Robespierre, the leading revolutionary within France at that time. As the head of the Committee of Public Safety, which was the executive committee of the National Convention, he and the committee would become well known for carrying out the Reign of Terror. For many months throughout 1794, Robespierre battled against other revolutionaries in the National Convention by questioning each of their loyalties towards the revolution. For example, he accused many people of being domestic threats to the continuation of the revolution. It is during this time that many prominent revolutionaries within the National Convention were guillotined for their perceived betrayal to the revolution and Robespierre maneuvered his way to the head of the convention. For example, when Georges Danton, a leading revolutionary, called for an end to the Reign of Terror he was the next to face the guillotine. Finally, on June 4th, 1794, Robespierre was elected the president of the National Convention.
As well, the Committee of Public Safety prepared France to deal with foreign invasions by establishing new armies for the country. Men across France were drafted into these new forces as the Committee sought to stop neighbouring countries from stopping the progress of the revolution.
Based on his actions and threats the National Convention voted to arrest Robespierre. On July 28th, 1794, soldiers stormed into where he was staying. As the soldiers arrived, he attempted to commit suicide by gunshot to the head, but was instead only injured in the jaw, shattering it. For the rest of the day, Robespierre was held captive until he was guillotined without a trial that same afternoon. With his death, the fear and paranoia of the revolutionaries ended and the Reign of Terror was over. After the execution of Robespierre and the excess of the Reign of Terror, the National Convention was replaced by the Directory in 1795.” …….

AI languages have been around for decades. They use orders of magnitude more CPU, Memory and storage resources compared to highly efficient procedural languages. That means orders of magnitude more energy. Data centers are rapidly becoming the largest electricity consumer in the US.
Add to that, “Artificial” Intelligence is just that – artificial. It is inherently flawed and it cannot come close to well written deterministic code for information processing.

Is admitting the truth out loud a gaffe? In race, politics and criminal justice today, I suppose it is. As for one of her most infamous comments….If you see them at a super market, or a gasoline station, or backyard BBQ…………, I’m wondering whether or not that might be a wise tactic for us to follow, or are we better than that?
