Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg was interviewed on May 26 by host Margaret Brennan on “Face the Nation.” Ms. Brennan is the most informative and objective of interviewers in the mainstream media.
Although “Mayor Pete,” as he came to be known, was merely the mayor of South Bend, Indiana, population 103,000, in 2020, he previously worked at McKinsey & Co., which hires really smart people to consult for corporatec clients. According to Mr. Buttigieg, his work “consisted of doing mathematical analysis, conducting research, and preparing presentations” on studies for clients. That means he’s one of the smarter people in the Biden administration.
At 9 minutes and 30 seconds, Ms. Brennan said, “Donald Trump repeatedly talks about President Biden’s decision to force the industry toward making 56 percent of car batteries electric by 2032, 13 percent hybrid.” She then played a video of President Trump at a rally in New Jersey.
“We’re spending hundreds of billions of dollars subsidizing a car that nobody wants and nobody’s ever going to buy,” President Trump said.
Then she continued, “He’s not wrong—”
“Oh, he’s wrong,” Mr. Buttigieg interrupted.
Ms. Brennan continued, “—on the purchasing. He’s not. Of the 4 million vehicles purchased, you know, what, 269,000 electric vehicles were sold in the U.S. market.”

From a purely engineering perspective, electric vehicles and fuel cell vehicles are likely the way to go eventually. But battery density isn’t “there”, and fuel cells are just not well developed enough and require new massive infrastructure. I think at least EVs are inevitable and when they make sense everyone will love them. But that’s far in the future. And forcing it doesn’t make it work.
If we must push some alternative to gasoline, I would go with CNG. The US can produce a ridiculous amount of it, and while it’s energy density is about 1/3rd that of gasoline, it burns cleaner and matches in efficiency. You’ll need a bigger tank on a vehicle for the same mileage though.
I’d just stick with gasoline until next gen batteries are doable, then shift to EV if, and ONLY if these idiot politicians take power generation seriously and shift to nuclear fission or embrace coal again. Otherwise, we do not generate enough electrical power to make it work.
Something in the technical details about this device is off. Need to dig some more into it’s advertised specifications to suss it out.
Carnot efficiency, heat transfer, maximum photovoltaic efficiency, something. Guess I will just have to read into the patents and PhD papers submitted by the inventors.

No, I get you, it’s an unproven technology and it is a bit of the pin the sky… but the same was once said about the current generation of EVs.
Right now I believe we’re in the Betamax moment of Automobiles… awaiting for their version of the VHS to arrive.
From a mechanic’s wife. Never, ever buy and EV auto. They will never be affordable or safe. A cheap and safe alternative to ICE autos is hydrogen cell powered engines. They could be made affordable to everyone and the fuel would be inexpsensive. But, the energy companies couldn’t make a killing in profits, so no one develops such an automobile for the mass market.
The problem with hydrogen and cng, in addition to volume, is compressed gasses, in an accident go,…BOOM!!

Not really. Most compressed gasses whimper more than boom. They aren’t under very high pressure and they aren’t going to automatically cause an explosion outside of very specific conditions. Vaporized gasoline is actually VERY volatile, yet we’ve figured that out and you don’t see movie explosions every time a car crashes. Same for CNG (which is used on a lot of municipal buses and on pretty much every forklift or forktruck without incident).
CNG is pretty proven tech. Hydrogen is…well can be dangerous but we can build tanks for it that aren’t so prone to a bad day. A leak doesn’t mean a bomb.
Hydrogen will never be “inexpensive” as it is not naturally available in any quantity.
It has to be manufactured and that process wastes almost as much energy as you get from the Hydrogen.
Fuel cells use water and separate it into hydrogen. They use it in the space programs. Shuttle had them I believe. Fuel is cheap but the process to do it is still not. Great alternative if the energy giants would get out of the way.

You say “Never” a lot. I don’t think that means what you think that means.
I have a heavy electrical background. My degree is in nuclear, but I was a nuclear electrician many many moons ago and I did work in a steel mill as an electrician before I went to college. Electrical motors are far, far more efficient than anything run by fuel. The energy losses in ICE engines is massive and the auto industry has gone to extremes to minimize that but it still comes nowhere close to electric motors. That’s why early industry ditched combustion engine driven stuff for electric motors over a century ago.
The problem with electric motors is, if you can’t tap straight into a utility then you have to carry the energy supply with you. Which means batteries. The instant torque from an electric motor is a beautiful thing and is why a Tesla can beat any muscle car off the line in a quarter mile acceleration sprint. But battery energy density is…problematic. Tesla has gone far with it, but it’s just not good enough. You carry a lot more energy including the efficiency losses in a gas tank than a big old Tesla battery. And to refill that energy you just use a pump for like 5 minutes.
But eventually that hurdle will be crossed. I pay close attention to papers on battery research and we are probably <10 years from batteries that could not only meet the range of a gas vehicle and also recharge as quickly as a normal gas pump, but also vastly exceed the range.
You’ll all be driving EV some day, if you live long enough. And you’ll love it. Electric motors are the backbone of industry and getting one on the road is a glorious thing. So much power.

Anyone who knows anything about energy and power knows there is no better (more efficient) form of power than power created at the source. That is the internal combustion engine. Liquid fuel is turned into power at the source.
With an electric vehicle, the power is created at a remote power plant, likely coal or gas fired power plant and is transferred to the source the via electric grid and stored in a battery. Every transfer of energy reduces the efficiency of that energy. For electricity, there are losses in the power lines, in the step down in voltage, in the storage devices, in the conversion from AC to DC, etc.
Electric vehicles should therefore be referred to as coal fired vehicles or natural gas fired vehicles. Some power plants across the country are wood fired or nuclear powered. The original source of the power is how they should be referenced.
There may be other sources of “power at the source” alternatives on the horizon. It’s always good to look for better/more efficient sources of energy. I don’t believe electric vehicles are the answer.
Like anything, it should not be mandated. It should be a choice.

Electricity is a refined power source mostly created from the other raw energy sources you mentioned.
The more refined the power, the more expensive, and that’s not ever going to change.
The current power generation in this country won’t be sufficient to go all electric anytime soon. The availability of hydro power is limited by suitable sites. Nuclear power, the best choice for power generation into the future, has initial large infrastructure costs, that will be passed on to the consumer.
When the climate hoax is finally put to rest, hydrocarbons are amd will remain the dominate power source for vehicles.
I think EVs do have a place, especially if the price can be lowered. I think in large urban centers when travel milage is limited, they may perform well as work trucks, delivery vans, or taxis. I don’t know if UPS drivers, as an example, fill their own gas tanks. If they do, 10 or more minutes in labor to fill the tank, as opposed to 1 minute plugging in the vehicle, can add up over a year. Also, the actual servicing, like engine oil and other things go away.
Compare an electric motor efficiency to an ICE engine efficiency and get back to me.
I acknowledge that we are not at the point where EV should replace ICE. But it will happen. Efficiency and economy demands it. But I sense a bit of Luddite mentality here. The ICE will die just like coal trains died. Things advance whether you like it or not.
With that said, I do not think the internal combustion engine will go away completely. Something about that feel of the engine will continue to excite us forever. That’s the real downside of electric. It doesn’t give you that feedback. It’s too static.
Well, until you hit the accelerator and it goes immediately with full torque. Electric race cars of the future will pull several Gs off the line.
EV’s are the FDS of transportation, and that won’t change anytime soon.
For the electric grid, the way to go is with smaller nukes and more of them, rather than the massive sites, with 3-5 large reactors per.
Another approach might be to turn a few more on. We keep reducing the number on line. There are currently 93 Reactors on at 54 locations on line as we type, down from 103 just two years ago..

We had everything converted to butane on our almond ranch in 1952. Tractors and trucks. Awesome. Until….one day our 5000 gallon pressurized tank took off like a rocket. No body hurt. The filling valve blew. Unknown reason. We converted back to diesel and gas! De nada

Our local school system used CNG in several buses they bought with a govt. grant years ago. It was a nightmare. Took hours to fuel them, the maintenance was horrible to do and they broke down all the time. They were abandoned after a couple years. Some of the metro buses here were CNG and they also were abandoned. Now they are each going to try EV buses. Really a complete waste of tax dollars.
I’m starting to see electric buses around here, too. It makes me wonder if the buyers ever read anything but the mfrs’ propaganda. I’m sure there is a lot of federal funding involved. Wouldn’t want to miss out on that.

If the world truly wanted electric cars, Toyota would dominate the world. The Prius is how old now yet counts for less than three percent o all their sales. I’m a nuclear guy, so it’s not that professional. I would be putting mini-reactors in everyone’s car and you only fill up on coolant.
When “they” kill of 5 or 6 billion people electric will still be crap and still require massive inputs of fossil fuels to build. No coal, no oil, no gas, no freaking metal and no freaking electric cars or electric anything. Your engineering perspective had better be expanded to include fossil fuels because without them you can’t build squat.
If you do not have any solar panels, then you’re an idiot. All of you people are so dependent on infrastructure you do not control. And are whining at me about pointing out how efficient and useful electric is, and when SHTF happens, you’ll be stuck without power, without transportation.
And people who have solar panels and can charge their car and run their house independent of all of this infrastructure you worship…they’ll at least have a few days to survive and figure out a plan.

A quick search returned a CNN article from 2023 which reported the US produces fewer than 10% of the EV batteries (China leads with about 67% and Europe most of the remainder) needed in the residential industry.
What could go wrong forcing the US into EVs when we overwhelmingly lack the vertical integration in production to protect our interests? Does the potted plant’s administration remember the ‘chip’ shortage a few years ago? It is bad enough the US is teetering on the dependence in pharmaceutical raw materials and bulk chemicals from overseas, why not just throw in electric batteries too?
This reminds me of obama’s comment that ‘electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket’ so the braintrust gets what they want.

It is probably helpful to understand the posture of the case. The lower court had granted summary judgment on the basis that Jacobson applied to almost any mandatory measures taken to ensure health and safety, and also relied on the CDC saying the jabs were “effective. ” (*but it never said effective at WHAT)
For purposes of Summary Judgment, the court must assume that the Plaintiff is able to prove all his facts, and that any facts in dispute will be taken as valid in the Plaintiffs favor.
So the court had to assume, for purposes of granting or denying summary judgment, the truth of the allegation that the jabs do not stop transmission (of course, now everyone admits this is true).
The Ninth Circuit said that Jacobson decision by SCOTUS only found Smallpox mandates constitutional because those shots were sterilizing shots that prevented the spread of smallpox (an actual deadly disease) to the public at large, and that the Jacobson holding cannot be expanded beyond those facts. The government cannot force treatment measures on the public for their own “good ” under the cover of enforcing public health.
Up until the recent madness, this was not a controversial issue. In the Karen Ann Quindlen case, SCOTUS found a constitutional right to refuse treatment.
The burden of proof for any measure restricting liberty – of movements, of association, of freedom to not wear a mask, of freedom to refuse the “treatment ” of a flu shot or a covid shot or any other shot – is on the government.
It always should have been on the government.
We still need to take constitutional and legal measures so this @#%! Never Happens Again.
But for now, the instant your local public health officer starts down that road, there needs to be an instantaneous legal challenge for violation of constitutional rights.

And of course the other way is with FUNDING. The major “covid emergency measure” changes to medicare/medicaid funding to hospitals, the incorporation of the PCR test, ventilators, run-death-is-near, etc. when really looked at I do not believe can be explained away as ‘well meaning overzeolous Public Health officials actions.
And we still have no idea WHO it was that wrote and promulgated these death sentences for thousands if not millions.

Look up the history of Quinine. It has been used as an anti-malarial in one form or another for hundreds of years. It’s from tree bark. Hydroxychloroquine is a form of/derivative of quinine.
Tonic water is a form of quinine. Although I’m guessing the tonic water we see now probably has very little, if any, quinine in it.
I can remember people buying bottled quinine, but you never see it anymore. They used it as a mixer.

Recently having leg cramps my doctor recommended drinking tonic water with quinine. Turns out the usual brands in stores have almost 30 grams of sugar – and then found a brand called Fever-Tree, named after the tree which is the source of the tree bark, with options for regular to lite where the lite is only 6 grams and this is the only brand I have found that the quinine actually mentions it comes from African tree bark.
Mentioning this because the usual brands we see in stores never mentions the source of their quinine and for those who have to watch their sugar intake it’s nice to know there are options out there.

In June of 2019, my dad was in a VA hospital and was told he had the ‘Corona virus’.

Think of that – just print one page out, sign it, wait till the ballot comes in the mail from your local clerk, include the one page in with the ballot and mail back. But the real reason is they don’t want to have to forge all those signatures on phony absentee ballots (forgery), and, in addition commit election fraud, plus they don’t want their ballot mills and mules to be on the hook for US mail fraud.
