When I read these books and quotes they most were sold to me as a “cautionary tale”, who knew there were a handful of people who read these as a how to books. Look at our world, RIGHT NOW! …we’ve been thrust into, up is down and left is right “the chaos is the point!”

There are three major remaining truck traffic routes through and around Baltimore. Two of them go through tunnels.
Four hostiles with four 18 wheelers pulling an Oklahoma City could take out the tunnels in just minutes, le azad being only one major route for the flow of I 95 traffic through that chokepoint. A rail attack at the same time (the railways also go through Baltimore), and you have reduced the supply chain to the northeast and mid-Atlantic considerably.

Just letting everyone on this feed know that the ship lost power twice. If this were a terrorist incident, they would have sped the ship up and not cut the power. The Baltimore issue is due to loss of control of a large container ship likely due to steerage issues related to power. It’s something that can happen. Even a well trained crew would have struggled in a situation like that with a much smaller vessel. Now, I’m sure that there are terrorist all over the world thinking “why didn’t I think of that” this morning. But we have to wait and see what is found. There are actually some coincidences and also a LOT of accidents.
Thank you for the info about the ship losing power. Sadly, as we are seeing with Boeing, quite often these days, it is not terrorism or sabotage but simply an unskilled, unprofessional workforce, lax quality control standards, and a corporate climate that puts profits above safety every time!

Usually before a ship comes in, it’s met miles away by a pilot. The pilot is trained to know the waters and can navigate them by memory. The pilot doesn’t need electrons, he knows the buoy lights, the shore lights, land marks, he knows his port and has spent most of his life on it. If a ship runs aground or into a bridge, it’s ultimately a failure of the pilot. I’m wondering if this ship had a pilot on it, if not, that was the beginning of the cascade of failures that lead to the catastrophe.
Good point, very good point. Pilots don’t get to be pilots unless they are qualified, and then some. So, I’m left wondering if this isn’t something akin to the Navy vessels a few years ago that collided. Computer virus? Hacking? DEI?

Like aircraft, large shipping vessels also have redundant systems.
They also apparently have multiplex fuel systems to burn cleaner diesel in port and switch to bunker oil on the ocean.
Shipping always has a lot of pressure on it. Time is money. Money drives the planet. Humans will cut corners in the name of money, lining more holes of the Swiss cheese to disaster until the redundancies designed into the system are surmounted.

Two pilots on board, per reports.
The area is the Outer Harbor. The Dali had just departed from a berth in Curtis Bay with 2 pilots on board, per recent reports. They had sent out a mayday signal and reported loss of control just minutes before impact. The camera angle on the video – likely from a cam on Fort Carroll – showing the ship’s approach then straightening out seconds before impact…is the most damning. IMHO, if it was truly random and accidental loss of control then the ship would have continued turning to starboard. This looks like someone or something was steering the ship into the bridge support. Curtis Bay channel is well-marked with navigational aids and the ship has large floodlights high near the bow that were on when it struck the bridge support structure.
Probably too granular for this thread but a discussion of the redundant systems on-board would likely be fruitful, forex the redundant electrical generation systems and control of directional surfaces and/or thrusters.
I found this brief video of how things go on a tugboat I watched many years ago to be very informative.
That channel also covers the good/bad/ugly of real life in a large container port from on the water. Accidents happen. While conditions vary, one could eat off the floor of that tugboat engine room. Impressive 🙂
My triple-great grandfather of my same surname was a “black gang” worker on a tugboat in Baltimore harbor in the latter 19th century / early 20th century. That was after doing the same job on Merchants & Miners cargo ships for a few decades.
Black gang = the men who shoveled coal into the fireboxes underneath the ship’s boiler(s). It was / is very hard and very unhealthy labor. But that was the type of work available to so many poor Irish immigrants in the 19th century.

I suspect a futile attempt to right the ship and make the channel for it straightening out. If it was going to hit, hitting head on does seem better that a glancing blow that my in fact rip the port side of the ship wide open. The ship would undoubted sink in that case.
What I can’t believe is loss of power / control with all the redundant features on board. I suspect lack of maintenance will be a major contributing factor.

Sure. If black swan events are being planned, there are many options and targets in our country that are vulnerable to sabotage. The idea is to move from one style of sabotage to another so that it creates fear and anxiety among the citizenry and the officials are left guessing as to the next target.
My guess is that real foreign saboteurs are more terrorist-style and hit relatively small random targets to maximize fear, but not large enough to trigger a national martial law decree.

You massively edited your original post. So you figured out that the ship never backed up, but moved forward out of Curtis Bay and steered to starboard, directly into the support stanchion. It never went to the Brewerton (main) Channel which is the correct approach for the bridge.

I’ve been experimenting with a couple 100W panels for an emergency battery backup I installed and in the last big storm one got swept off the roof of the pump house, disconnected its cable at the connection and fell to the ground some ten feet below.
No damage. Shocking. Looked like it got a corner hit. Ended up leaning against the building. I believe they weigh about 20 lbs or so. Cheap panels, bought them on sale from Harbor Freight for 90 bucks each.
Anyway, engineers can’t design for everything. We routinely get marble to golfball sized hail here and no problems so far. Everything is bigger in Texas 🙂

What the article also fails to discuss is that: “the UK is fairly far north.” At least, when compared to me. Around here, “freezing” is typically something that you only encounter until the sun warms up. Around here, my “heat pump” does a great job. But, even then, sometimes it relies upon “auxiliary heat.” And it cannot do the job without it.
