‘I had people come up to me saying, “I love you, man. I’m going to do Trump this time and you next time,”‘ he said.

Ron DeSantis of Florida is starting to signal that he is building an off-ramp from the race for the Republican presidential nomination, a seeming acknowledgment of his dim prospects of defeating Donald J. Trump given his low poll numbers in New Hampshire and South Carolina.
So far this week, Mr. DeSantis has cast his eyes forward to 2028 with anecdotes about Trump supporters saying they would vote for him next time around if he runs again in four years. He has conceded that Mr. Trump’s thumping victory in Iowa on Monday made for a “good showing in terms of him winning the nomination.” And he has openly admitted that he believes he made a strategic mistake by icing out the traditional media earlier in the campaign.
It all amounted to a kind of frankness that Mr. DeSantis has not always shown in his public comments about the nominating contest — and a marked change in tone for a candidate who spent most of last year brashly promising he would win Iowa, which he lost by 30 points.
On Thursday, the conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt asked Mr. DeSantis if his campaign would survive through the end of March. The Florida governor replied that things were not necessarily going to plan. (read more)

He will be lucky to hold the governor job, (if he isn’t term limited). And even that job is probably in jeopardy because of this horrendous campaign.

I am certain that he only ran for the Florida Governor spot in order to position himself as a presidential candidate and rake in big donations (Florida has no $ limit). The people of Florida were used, but fortunately got a few good things out of it but I keep hearing about insurance rates and other issues that have gotten worse. And he’s been traipsing around the country doing copycat rallies and meeting secretly with anti-Trump donors and now visiting states prior to primaries, Florida doesn’t have a Governor right now. I wonder how productive and vocal he’ll be when he returns to Florida and starts doing his job again.

I am sorry to read of your plight in FL. Not sure if I’ve been to AMI. My entire immediate family lives in Florida, and my entire family used to pile up in our station wagon and make the drive to Florida twice a year because my Uncle had a condo he let use at Lauderdale by the Sea.
RD made promises re insurance etc to people in Florida and reneged on them. I guess those promises were too hard for him to keep.
And my family, all Dems think all of this is happening is only because RD is Republican. I worry for all of them because it seems none of them can read the content of a politician’s character. LOL. Not sure if I can either.
The only person I trust with promises as a politician is DJT. He has kept his pledges as to what he would do for American’s.

I hope things work out for you Marc. AMI is very peaceful. My little family has probably made the trip down from NW Illinois 7 times in the last 15 years. We usually stay in a different beach house each time. They have all been very nice. My daughter was a bit heartbroken when they closed down Lobstah’s though. No family vacation in 2023 and I doubt we will have the money in 2024, but I am sure if things get better anytime soon we will likely get there again.

I think we only need to worry about loyalty for Trump’s VP. The person must be absolutely loyal to Trump and discreet, no leaks, no behind-the-scenes conversations with anyone who is antagonistic toward Trump. That person does not need to run for President in 2028, there will be others who will run.

I doubt there is anything noble or even smart about DeSantis decision. Most likely he’s been pressured by the establishment and donors to drop out to allow Haley to go one-on-one against Trump. in Iowa most the DeSantis and Haley campaign ads were directed against each other rather than Trump, as they fought over second place.
Ideally from a Trump perspective DeSantis would stay in a bit longer and continue to attack Haley.
So now I think there’s a big question: Did DeSantis’ wealthy donors choose him because they actually wanted him to be President or did they do it because they just wanted someone to knock Trump out of the race? If the latter then he won’t be getting big $$$ donations any more. Maybe he can be a pundit on MSNBC. lol

The Republican Governors Association pourd so many millions of dollars into DeSantis’ Florida Governor campaign which was very obviously intended to be transferred over to his presidential campaign. I should see if I can come up with a total, I thought it was jaw-dropping.
A Washington Post article says the Republican Governors Association had given DeSantis more than $14 million in 2022 alone, “even though his reelection campaign was already well-funded and wasn’t as competitive as some of the RGA’s highest priorities”. I would look it up but the campaign fund was renamed to something bizarrely generic and I don’t remember what the new name is.
