I’m hoping that spring will bring the bird population back to what it was before last summer’s wildfire smoke descended into my area. That was an eerie period –months waking up to silence instead of bird calls.
Have seen a regular resident hawk, at least I beileve it is the same bird from before the smoke so am happy to see him (there’s something for him to hunt). Have heard geese overhead, crows. Have not seen my favorite cardinal couple, hope they made it and will return. No woodpeckers either right now. Fairly sparse but some birds have returned.
My hope is many birds temporariliy left the area. Have not read any news about a die-off from the smoke. Perhaps I’ll reach out to local wildlife rehabbers to see if they have any news on what might have happened.
There was a very interesting story about the really rare Golden-winged Warblers (arguably the most beautiful Warbler) leaving a area before a tornado came. I hope something similar happened where the birds knew before hand and saved themselves. Is your doggie ok I hope?

I loved the doggie get-well photo. Thank you. Your kind well-wishes and zoom’s prayers helped. My fur baby, a kitty, is finally breathing easier for which I am grateful. Time will tell between possible diagnoses.
Two weeks ago the vet shocked me with the C word when I brought my little one in on emergency fit-in due to respiratory distress. The vet and tech both pushed for immediate euthanasia. I
pushed back with more questions.
The vet finally sent the x-ray off to a board certified radiologist for a 2nd opinion. The radiologist reported that the x-ray did not look like cancer to him, or at least not a typical presentation –he listed other possibilities to do w the lungs and maybe worth cardio conand.
The vet said she believed she was right about cancerous masses but to her credit the vet agreed to prescribe medication for asthma/bronchitias in line with the radiologist report.
Have been researching like crazy what would present with the contradictory results. Found three options, two would be relatively fixable/benign. Wrote the vet, haven’t heard back with the holiday and all.
The medication helped and she was feeling a bit of her old self today –enuf to consider teasing her ‘brother,’ and resuming some of her old routine.
