I remember watching this on the huge screen in a real/vintage movie theater when it first came out.
Spectacular scenes seen on that big screen.
But since watching this movie, even as a young kid, the thought of having other people forced into my home to live with my family — at the expense of my family — has stuck with me.
Throughout the years I’ve always made mental notes of what room I’d want to live in if such a thing was forced upon me, and what stuff I’d want to keep in my one and only room if that was all I had.

An excellent movie: another movie from the early 1980’s called The White Rose (Die Weisse Rose) gives an overview of the underground group and how they were betrayed by a janitor at the university!
For those who do not know, students at the University of Munich were inspired by underground copies of anti-Nazi sermons delivered by the Catholic Archbishop Galen of Münster.
Galen could not be arrested, apparently, because his family was aristocratic and he was quite popular throughout his archdiocese and beyond.
Afraid of making him a martyr and inspiring a revolt by Catholics, the Nazis sealed off Münster as well as they could.
In fact, they did succeed in general, because few people knew that he had taken a stand publicly from his cathedral against the Nazis and Hitler.
However, the Catholic underground smuggled out copies of his sermons: they inspired the Munich students to spread the word to resist and stop Hitler and his minions.
As we know, they failed: only total ruin stopped the Nazis.

One of the most dramatic movie scenes I have ever watched is the courtroom segment in Sophie Scholl: The Final Days, a German movie with English subtitles that I cannot recommend too highly. The movie revolves around Hans and Sophie Scholl, a brother and sister who were two of the principal members of a German organization called the White Rose.
I first wrote about the White Rose in 1996 in an article entitled “The White Rose: A Lesson in Dissent,” which was later published in an anthology on the Holocaust for high school students. The White Rose is one of the most remarkable stories of courage I have ever encountered. The fact that the organization was composed primarily of college students makes it even more amazing.

Given it’s a 767, it’s likely toast. The sad thing is, at most medium to large airports, the plane could’ve landed itself far better than that without pilot input. I flew United a lot back during my work life and it was pretty normal at the DEN (Denver) hub, usually due to fog. Never worried about it.
I doubt I’ll ever fly again. Too much wrong with too many things now.

I did a bit more digging and apparently N641UA has had a very long life and some recent mechanical issues prior to the reported incident in July 23 being discussed here.

Usually it is the Captain who manages the landing, which is mostly computerized anyway (for obvious reasons).
But: yes, there should be a hearing, a mechanical report (especially studying the brakes and landing gear), careful analysis of all flight data – and no rush to judgment. These folks just make things like this LOOK easy. But it never is. And there are a thousand electromechanical systems, all of which must “work perfectly in the air.”
Usually the crew decides PF and PM during briefing, though they can change it. Usually PIC taxis because s/he has the nose wheel tiller on that side, though that can depend on the aircraft type.
N641UA has a preliminary NTSB report out on the incident. I didn’t see a final report but perhaps my searching was incomplete. The incident was discussed in detail on aviation professional forums for those who have further interest.

I know the stuff I saw in industry back in the day, 60’s and 70’s, would curl your hair. Nasty. And I worked in it every day. B. We know California, Illinois, and probably New York are broke. These states can not possibly raise taxes enough to balance their budgets. So revenue sharing, begun under emergency legislation, can not now be stopped without disaster. They must have a reason to maintain the bucket brigade from the feds into perpetuity to keep afloat.
We need to understand the “why” of this, so we can stop it. Is it age demographics? It is not about workers to pick tomatoes. Democrats don’t give a rat’s rear end about farmers, who vote Republican and line up for subsidies so fast it makes your head spin. This is such a reckless policy, it can only be going on because there is no other alternative within reach.
The Democrats must be desperate. At least the present cohort running the place is barely holding together. If we can block them at their weakest link, that party is going to come apart.
I submit that you are looking too deeply. All three of the reasons I listed above are what is driving the DemoCraps AND Corporate RINOs to advocate keeping the flood of illegals coming in. Neither subgroup of elitists support all 3 reasons simultaneously, but one or two of those 3 reasons are what motivates each and every faction with the Uniparty & their multinational corporate benefactors..
You have three good reasons. I will add D: Someone is making or going to make a ton of money off the flood of illegals. Did I hear that the feds are going to provide free legal representation to these prospective immigrants? There you go, bread and butter for democrat law firms.

Mental illness thinking can not be understood by rational people. I think a big part of it is just a false idea of fairness. Why should one country be so wealthy with a high standard of living when there are sh-t holes around the world. I would say it relates to the communist ideology where everybody gets the same except those in charge. Both of these ideas really come from the inability to reason and lack of common sense, both a form of mental illness IMHO.
So, import a lower standard of living.
Whatever it is, it’s BS. Think about it. As robots and robotic machinery increases in sophistication and application, coupled with AI, no way we’ll need more workers. Maybe in the trades because I can never see a robot fixing a leaky pipe in your crawlspace or building custom-made cabinetry. But all those illegals aren’t tradesmen (and ladies, no insult intended. I know you get your hands dirty, too). It’s the votes. That’s all it is, the votes, and then contributing to the breakdown of our society.
If the 15 minute cities posit plays out, it’s also quite possible that robotic demolition and 3D printed construction will take the place of current construction techniques and trades.
The problem, long term, with replacing humans with machines is something the new world order will fix too, depopulating the planet sufficiently to achieve a balance. Else, there will be mouths to feed and bodies to service which perform no useful function in the machine.
We can review the machine world in my historical trade, manufacturing, for clues. Machines have a relatively high cap cost compared to human labor and require a different kind of health care from humans. They don’t unionize, walk out/quit/strike, call in sick, collect extraneous benefits, pay into or collect social security or medicare, etc, and, poignantly, don’t gossip nor complain.
We can look at a factory from WW2, when my mom worked in the Consolidated plant in San Diego building bombers and compare to a typical aerospace plant of today.
Here’s the rub… with more machines and fewer humans either alive or able to afford to fly on their social credit score government stipend, who’s going to fly on those planes? Other machines?

Yep – my husband is a retired firefighter, and as such, we are fully responsible for our own medical premiums until age 65. Full retirement age for first responders is generally considered to be 58 with 30 years of service – due to the physical requirements of the job very few work until 65, until they have a desk job.
Our costs, which were already 1/4 of my husband’s pre-tax pension, just went up another 15% this year, and that is with a $5,000 per person deductible! Our utilities and property taxes are also up almost 20% and food/gas/insurance costs are up double digits, just as they are for everyone.
BUT due to state law, his pension is capped at a 3% COLA every year, so now we are falling further and further behind – I feel like I am living through the Carter years again! (And I didn’t like them at all the first time around!)

If memory is correct, this was implemented in order to forestall identity theft where people posing as someone else could file returns and get refunds meant for the authentic filer.
