Retired Magistrate here: Before we got our security system, this was my biggest fear while on the bench. No one was checked before coming into the Courtroom and I was constantly watching hand movements while hearing evidence and making rulings from the bench.
At the time my bench was bullet proof and I had a security alarm. But by the time the Sheriff’s deputies could get there, it would be too late. My bailiff was a woman and was not armed. She was a wonderful individual; however, not capable of defending me. We had a door behind the bench and I always told her that if things started looking shaky she was to go out the door and I would be right behind her. I had several documented death threats while on the bench and after certain cases deputies would walk me to the car to make sure I was safe.
Glad I got out in one piece after my tenure.

The judge got up off the floor well after the defendant was subdued by three dudes and dozens of punches.
The judge looked confused as she was escorted out of the chamber but otherwise seemed OK.
Her spacial awareness and excellent reaction saved her from full-on attack by the uncivilized feral thing. If the judge had not leaned to the right in her attempt to get away from the airborne thug, the outcome could have been very different for her.

Attacks on the rest of us have been ignored as they turn them back to the streets in our neighborhoods and schools on a daily basis, perhaps the chickens coming home to roost will have some effect.

It was very very interesting to watch the education of her judicial clerk. Shock, an instinctive reaction to do the right thing, awakening to the fact that the deputies were not going to handle this – he was there – he had better jump in and help as much as he could, and untrained or not — he tried. Then he went to help her, and the look on his face when he stood up and told someone to get a doctor said it all.
That men, who must have worked his tail off in high school, college, and law school to get to that clerkship learned more in 5 minutes than he had in 3 years of law school. What shocked me was the inertia — not one person rushing forward with emergency training, calling for the medical kit, doing a basic assessment. Does know one know basic first aid any more ?
Try that in a military base, airport around flight crew, or similar locale and everyone in that courtroom would have been springing into action to assist.
The lack of men doing anything was shocking. That’s why I give that kid props. He did what his body would physically allow. And I know I took a dig at him, but I meant it when I gave him credit.
