Target reported decreased sales but increased their margin by depleting their inventory. It was an abysmal report but they put their best spin on it, just trying to make it through another quarter. Naturally, their sycophantic lap dogs in the financial press are helping them. The stock is currently up nearly $20/share (about 18%).
I have come to believe that Wall Street is almost entirely rigged. My observational experience tells me that the huge rise in their stock today is for the purpose of talking up the stock so retail will buy in and then the big guys can come in and short it. But it’s unclear to me if something even more underhanded is going on: it’s possible Wall Street has just decided Target is going to survive no matter what and so its stock price will remain artificially high. For sure, it’s common to see upswings in stock prices after a company goes woke and sales suffer – the press can’t have their darlings show battle scars from a conservative boycott. Obviously, Target has been woke for years. The question is how long can the financial press continue to pretend all is well with the company?

Remember that Target stock had a huge move from the Covid lows in March 2020 around $92 to $263 at the high. TGT stock was trading a few days ago around $104 which was almost back down to the Covid lows and pretty clearly pricing in a US recession. The CPI and PPI reports this week were both better than expected, so I see the move in the stocks of TGT and other US retailers as a relief rally pushing out the odds of a recession. Could be short lived as I still expect a recession in the US. I am no fan of either TGT or woke corporations in general but this seems more like a ‘no-recession’ move to me.
Not sure I agree. Its same store sales were down 4.9% and online sales were down 6%. Factor in inflation to those numbers and sales were way, way down YOY. My guess is TGT will be back down in a few weeks once it falls off the press’ radar, but who knows? It’ll be interesting to see what Walmart says tomorrow. My guess is sales will be flat, after accounting for inflation.
As I’m sure you know, CPI and PPI are all part of the big con. The CPI was better primarily because the government recalculated how health insurance is calculated. According to the government math, health insurance went down by a staggering 25% YOY.
They are the con, not just part of it as you said, they’ve been changing the recalculation of both for years now.

My cost of living has not abated … not hardly. And if “investors” believe that will bode well for our teetering economy … then they deserve to lose all their money.

Alleycats, we don’t go out to dinner often. We are seniors and watch all we spend. Can’t help the grocery store. We buy what we need and that’s it…and I often joked with the staff there that they need to be installing a defibrillator at checkout.
But there is a fish n chips van which comes to our neighbourhood once a month. We miss our fish n chips from Britain, and everywhere we’ve tried here in Texas has been a disappointment. This van has the real McCoy!!
So we splurged and ordered two portions. We didn’t look at the price, more fool us. We guessed it wouldn’t be cheap…but $34.00!!!?!?!??!!!
We would have enjoyed it immensely had we not had to take out a mortgage to pay for it…
I don’t know how people afford to eat out…I really do not.
At least me & hub get a few FREE birthday dinners from couple places we signed up for. That sure helps!

We used to go out once or twice a month and I really enjoyed the opportunity to NOT fix dinner, after 40 years of being chief cook and bottle washer… But the prices are crazy and my Scottish blood rebels at champagne prices for beer food!
I saw a survey a few days ago that said 20% of seniors are looking at going back to work in order to make ends meet. I suspect the numbers may be higher than that, TBH! We always lived beneath our means and saved and did all of the things that “responsible” people do, but when I see people on public assistance and those who don’t speak English getting WAY better benefits than I do, I kind of feel like a chump!

When my in-laws came here in the late fifties, just before my husband was born, they had to swear that they would NEVER apply for any public benefits ever! Which coincidentally, they never did!
My mother-in-law had to learn English so that she could get a driver’s license and my brother and sister-in-law were thrust immediately into the public school system, where they were expected to figure it out and, lo and behold, they did!
One of my biggest frustrations, and I’m sure I will be called all kinds of names for it, is when someone is granted a green card or an H1B Visa, and is then allowed to bring over their entire family, including elderly parents and in-laws, who immediately get put onto SSI and Medicare, even though they have never worked a day in this country and who never bother to learn a word of English, because they don’t need to!
I’m sorry if this sounds hardline, but I do not think that anyone coming to this country under family reunification criteria should ever be eligible for any benefits! If you want your parents or your in-laws to live with you, then you support them! End of story!
Recently I had the opportunity to watch on TV 2 different shows of ward meetings in Chicago where the residents are furious about the government deciding to put hundreds to thousands of new immigrants in their neighborhoods taking away community resources for the new ones and stealing hard won resources from the communities. The first neighborhood was African American and the second was mostly Asian and Latino immigrants from the last 25 years. They are just as outraged as us. The immigrants are insulted by the financial aid given to the new immigrants and are able to elaborate on how these things are supposed to occur in this country and what their rights as citizens are and how they are being violated. Yes there’s always a couple of liberals that were solidly booed. I found it quite heartening. There was another similar show from Long Island NY where local politicians exposed a suspicious local history of also taking away a vital community resource and now putting it towards the newest immigrants. The result for me was uplifting that no matter who or where most of us are feeling violated in the same ways despite efforts to divide us.
People in their early twenties getting disability benefits more than what seniors get yet are well enough to work construction? Under the table of course. People coming to the border after having transferred all properties and businesses to their kids, giving the government approved (and trained I hear) sob story and getting twice the benefits citizen seniors get because they have to navigate a language barrier? People here for decades on a green card working and crying poor – Grandparents last years totally on the dole and when they die the kids bring the fortune here and buy properties, live the good life with no intention of paying back US taxpayers for their parents care and our government does nothing. That chump thing is not a feeling, it’s a fact. The system was not designed to give to masses of people that never paid in.

I checked out of Safeway last week and the total for a few bags of groceries was $197.00 !!! I was shocked, but was doing what I call a “speed shopping” trip … get outta my way … I’m on a mission! So I didn’t question the receipt. But when I got home and put the groceries away … and finally looked at the receipt. The checker charged me for 11 heads of cauliflower… not the one I actually purchased. I went back and got my $40.00 refund ($3.99 x 10 heads of cauliflower) … but my little trip was STILL $157.00!! A trip that might have cost $95.00 during the Trump presidency
I had an easy inexpensive go to meal that I would make every now and then for me and my husband. In 2016 the three ingredients cost no more than $8.00 at the most. The last time I made that meal was three months ago and it cost over $14.00.
I order mine ahead of time. I get to search the sales and coupons and my store has a gas station and gives me big discounts. I schedule the time for pickup and there is an hour window. I also use store brands more now. Try it.

USA treats div as long term cap gain, 20% with a 3% surcharge if you make good money. Interest is considered ordinary income and taxed at that rate, typically 35-38%.
I’ve got some stock in Enbridge, based in Canada and they take 15% of my div for Castro’s kid, kinda like raking the pot in a backroom card game. Also Canuck stocks held in an individual’s name require paperwork every year or tax rate is about 35% – held in a brokerage account Castro’s kid just takes 15%.

There are all sorts of problems for women who abort then go on to give birth. I can only imagine seeing a newborn for the first time, holding that precious miracle in your arms…and the reality of having aborted a previous child hit you.
No one can prepare a new mother for the moment she sees her child for the first time. But you can’t tell women that. They can have no concept of the power of that moment.
Then do you ever tell your other children? Tell them that you aborted a sibling? Think about the emotions of that…for the mother and her children. How would any of them process that news?

The very few times I have visited my local Target (to see the eye doctor), it was very strange. It is huge with comparatively little merchandise and the merchandise looks so cheap and Chinese. There were few customers.
I keep on expecting this store to close but it hasn’t so I don’t get it.
I paid for small object with single dollar bills. The checker used some counterfeit yellow marker on the dollar bills. I have seen checkers look over hundreds or even fifties, but $1 dollar bills?

I hear the personalities on Dave Ramsey talk about their Target shopping, so I know Target still does a fair amount of business among conservatives. We have a Target up the street from us but I’ve only been there a handful of times over the last decade. It is clean and bright, but it always has tons of empty shelves. Even before they went full woke, I rarely shopped there because I never knew if they’d have what I needed in stock. For instance, I very clearly remember them not having blue uniform walking shorts when probably a majority (or at least half) of the kids in that store’s area wore uniforms to school. Meanwhile, the BJ’s (who, in theory, should be less sensitive to a store’s specific demographics), and is right across the street from the Target, had plenty of blue and tan uniform shorts.
Meanwhile, I have to drive about 10 minutes to get to Walmart. I’m not a huge Walmart shopper, but our specific Walmart is actually pretty good though I’ve certainly been to some yucky ones. My grown daughter splits most of her grocery shopping between Aldi and Walmart and she reports that she’s seeing lots more upscale people doing their grocery shopping at the Walmart these days. We’ll see what happens in the next few years, but I personally think Target’s business model of hawking useless bougie crap will not survive while Walmart’s business model selling cheap Chinese crap (and essentials) will.
The WalMarts here in the S.F. Bay Area are JUST AS EXPENSIVE as Safeway and all the other retailers. WalMart is absolutely NOT a discount store here in the Bay Area. I’m not a fan of government intervention … but it sure looks like price collusion to me

Walmart’s here is good for groceries (staples but must be supplemented for meat, fish, organic) and essentials. Middle class, no dangerous-looking shoppers. They are big on order online and just drive up and have groceries delivered to your car, too. The store has recently been modernized with expanded liquor area, pet area, craft section. The clothes have always been awful as far as I can tell. In the rare moment when I bought a t-shirt, the fabric did not hold up and stretched out after washing. (I guess there’s Chinese and there’s better Chinese).
However, Walmart’s just 20 miles away has off-putting customers and a dangerous parking lot. Won’t go there anymore.)
IMHO, Target tried to be “stylish” and trendy and capture the woke and trendy young. Their merchandise is all overpriced crap as far as I can tell. Never bought there after they took the Christmas out of the “Holidays”and began catering to the pagan crowd.

my neighbor, an insurance guy who was high up came to me years ago with glee that insurance companies were now able to be in the banking business. For years banks could be in insurance. I didn’t get it.
Well it struck me later when the federal reserve was printing the 30 trillion of debt.
You see if you or me lose or have stolen our goods or services we are out of luck, not banks or insurance companies. Insurance just claims it on bank losses and the federal government reimburses that money. Cool huh. We pay, we lose we lose we pay more. banks can’t lose, so insurance can’t lose.
Go to the next visible scam. All big corporations are reimbursed when they lose and, given money to disperse as they wish. There is no individual company or their loses government already owns it all.
This quality of life is all an illusion, and politicians know it. They all keep the ruse up because when this actually collapses, it will be from actual conservative principles. We are too far down the road to fix this unless we become a communist or Marxist nation.
Then my favorite questions, “are you a socialist?” Well if you take any government handouts you are a socialist. That is where people hide their heads like turtles.

What is the point of showing the year 2018? That wasn’t even Thanksgiving weekend back then.
The forecasts I see based on the global prediction models show a big rainstorm the day before Thanksgiving, with central and northern Maine getting snow. No snow for areas further south.
That was the best comparison for the current forecast I guess. I pulled it off of Joe Bastardi’s Twitter site where it was posted by another poster. Lots of meteorologists comment there.
Bastardi is one of the worst hype artists for big snowstorms. His track record is really bad.

rah: I remember a good Thanksgiving snowstorm in NJ, about 32 years ago. I went crosscountry skiing on a nearby golf course (since moved to CA). Thanksgiving in the Northeast is usally either unseasonably warm or boring gray and rainy.
As of right now, the “global temperature” is 58.38 F. That is .18F above the average. There is no “climate crisis”.
Remember this:
There is absolutely NO SUCH THING as a “global temperature” … it is meaningless statistical mumbo jumbo. What’s the “average temperature in my back yard”? Daily? Doesn’t mean a damn thing to me. Is Nov. 15 (today) warmer than Nov. 15 last year? Utterly meaningless. Temperature is NEVER a constant.
Ohhhhh but all the temperatures taken over a hundred years are what we call “climate”. Nonsense … there’s no such thing as “global” climate. Only climate zones … places were the location on our tilted spinning globe … and the topography … and dominant weather patterns create what we know as localized climate.
That’s why I put it in quotes. But it’s metric the alarmists went with and it is nice to shove the facts down their throats using a metric they made up.

That is interpolating a temperature in a location or region where there is not weather station based on the data from the nearest actual weather station near by or for a region by interpolation of and adjoining region where they do have actual data.
It is not accurate or scientific and it is deceptive as hell.

Were you watching me lol? I stare at the river and the currents, the tides, the birds…..it’s wonderful. Three big fat ducks wandered in last fall and I feed them a floating duck food–the little fishes and the catfishes have caught on and they nibble what the ducks miss. Then a big gray heron discovered the little fishies….well I have a whole little ecosystem outside the kitchen window. I am truly blessed.

My daughter had one she named Heidi and adored her. When she and her family had to move and she started working again, she gave her to the little daughter of a good friend, plus all the proper equipment to keep her warm and healthy. This child had a physical disability and had always loved Heidi. You can imagine how over the moon she was 😍
And yes…no expectations is a good place to be. Take what the good Lord gives us and be grateful🙏🏻

Betsy … you know I am an Anglophile. I so admire the culture and the civilized nature of the English … the TRADITIONAL English I might add. And you can imagine what a fan of Jeremy Clarkson I am. Well … an episode of Clarkson’s Farm … when he held a “Hedgelaying” competition … pretty much encapsulates everything I love about The English. I had NO IDEA of just how utterly refined the English are about their hedgerows!! They employ multiple techniques of “laying over” the hedgerows into what can only be described as masterworks works of gardening ART. And something tells me that the hedgehogs LOVE it. And where else on earth do hedgehogs live? How utterly English. And the English adore those little rodents.

My nephew had to move his beautiful race horse to a track in Ohio. He said just last night, he couldn’t take the BS wokeness anymore with the racing officials, trainers, et al. The trainer was racing her knowing she was having breathing problems, she needed surgery and will be able to race in two weeks.
As does me my friend. You ever see the movie “Seabiscuit”? Great movie and “Secretariat” with Diane Lane was almost as good. I spent many of my younger days at the racetrack. The race horse industry supports many horse farms, which I always enjoy driving through and seeing. Beautiful animals.

What is it about “horse films” that generate that kind of emotional response? Oh! And “The Horse Whisperer” too! That one is a tear jerker … despite all the leftist actors.
That one I couldn’t watch. I was forewarned about what was in it. But The Man from Snowy River was simply brilliant.
Betsy, the Horse Whisperer is an awesome story; to me, one of Redford’s best roles. Scarlett Johansson’s acting (the young girl who is traumatized by the accident that injured her and her horse badly and wrought the death of her friend) also was superb, as was the rest of the primary cast. My wife and I have watched this several times and still find it very moving.
If your eyes aren’t wet at the climactic “big reveal” toward the end of the story….(but I know yours will be).
Yes there are a few tough moments (no blood or mangled bodies) in the beginning that are repeated in a “flashback” later in the plot, but we’ve seen far far worse. Just remember that no animals were hurt in the filming of the scenes. They have stunt horses trained to roll over.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Chinese companies are buying up U.S. chipmaking equipment to make advanced semiconductors, despite a raft of new export curbs aimed at thwarting advances in the country’s semiconductor industry, a report said on Tuesday.
The 741 page annual report, released by the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, takes aim at the Biden administration’s Oct. 2022 export curbs, which seek to bar Chinese chipmakers from getting U.S. chipmaking tools if they would be used to manufacture advanced chips at the 14 nanometer node or below.
With the Commerce Department using the 14 nanometer restriction limit, “importers are often able to purchase the equipment if they claim it is being used on an older production line, and with limited capacity for end-use inspections, it is difficult to verify the equipment is not being used to produce more advanced chips,” the report stated.

We can all help to make the world a better place by helping one another. Every little bit helps.
Young people need to get involved in church groups. Jesus is the way, the truth, the light.

I will not call this a RACE issue. The media might but I will not. Why? Because there are MANY if not MOST black people would not participate in such a thing. First and foremost, I will stand on the fact that most black people do not do this.
But I will also not deny that this type/style of violence is predominantly found within that community. There’s a lot of research into this subject and it’s probably best explained in a book called “The Color of Crime.” The short summary is this: All people have criminals among them, none worse than the other in a general sense. Crime is crime and even violent crime is violent crime. But it is and should be recognized that based on REGIONAL and LOCAL cultural influences, some crimes and methods differ. We’ve all heard of horrific ways and means such as the Colombian Necktie. Not a thing black or white people do is it? How about “Necklassing”? If you don’t know what that is, don’t look into it on a full stomach. That’s not an American thing at all.
But this thing where a whole mob of people will converge and stomp people to death is almost completely unique to one group in the USA and only a SMALL subset of that group would actually do that and a slightly larger than small subset would do nothing neither to stop it nor participate for reasons it’s not necessary to get into — it’s complicated.
It’s murder though. Murder by a LOT of people. And the law does not allow “fractional sentencing” though prosecutors may negotiate down based on evidence. But for now, they are all [to be] charged with MURDER unless we stop paying attention and they try to let them off. We can’t let that happen.
Lynching, by historical comparison was at least equally bad so let’s be fair about it — white people (not all, and probably a small subset) did this mob violence against black people and I doubt anyone excuses or supports it in any way. We condemn it and would condemn it today if it happened.
I hope everyone, regardless of racial identity can do the same in this case. I know it will be a horror for their children involved and to the parents to see the justice system play out because for whatever reason, they thought being a member of a mob would “anonymize” themselves. (This is why these looting and shoplifting mob activities play out — because they are organized so that there’s simply too many of them to know who did what exactly) But Justice NEEDS to be done in this and every similar case. If for some reason this doesn’t eventually become a deterrent for some would-be criminals, then it’s even more tragic, but punishment is a requirement for a just society to be maintained.

First off, recognise that “Lynching” in the american South was NOT restricted to Blacks, it was White Southern Democrats doing the lynching, and they lynched plenty of WHITE Republican for violating Jim Crow laws, by (for instance) teaching Blacks how to read, as a first step towards registering them to vote, as back then they were virtually guaranteed to vote for “the Party of Lincoln” i.e. Republican.
About 15 years ago there was a story in Az that got a lot of press.

They roughed him up and threw him out.
He intentionally backed his truck up, and knocked over their bikes, parked in a row, like dominoes.
They came charging out, en mass and opened fire, killing him.
Despite clear evidence of what happened, and a big push from yhe public (the victim was engaged to be married) ,…the prosecutor announced they were, regretably declining to prosecute.
He said the coronor could NOT, definitvely say whather the cause of death was the .45 To the head, or the .357 to the heart, etc. and due to a loophole in theclaw, no prosecution would be successful.
hence, in AZ. you could get away with murder, just so long as you got many others to shoot the victim at the same time.

do not spend a dime for anything that is not an absolute necessity. Prices will drop trying to get the business back. Any frivolous spending goes to small local companies that need our support.
