We can’t be careless or too obvious – it’s dangerous both ways. However, there is so much that is beautiful that we miss when we if we become totally mistrustful of ‘certain’ types.
This happens and is unfortunate because I know of many real refugees from Iran itself brought in by religious organizations especially of the Baha’i faith groups around 2015 and later. Real and caring people. Beautiful in spirit. Prayerful devout family oriented people. Hard-working, decent folks. All I know is they are forever grateful, came without speaking English at all, nothing except whatever clothes they have with them.
The couple I got to know well had father and grandfather killed (beheaded) their beautiful family homes were confiscated and destroyed, a couple used by the occupiers for their own purposes and headquarters. For not complying with the regime’s dictates and extortions. Young man was a successful architect; to date is unable to do it again because he is not able to operate successfully without being truly proficient in written English language required here’ although he now speaks fluent English with a beautiful Persian accent.
Most worked to speak and write English, many succeeded and even attended the college/university to get as much education they could, graduated with honors. Got employed and saved from scratch. The couple I knew since have bought a house, rented out to help with expenses because the husband was having a tougher time with jobs, They lived in a 2 room small apartment and only late last year managed to find a home because the 2 daughters aged 5 and 9 are now young teens requiring more room. The oldest has started driving herself to school and part time job. The girls have no problems with the language here because they just learn it in school like ducks take to water, proficient in computers and everything kids excel in – cell phones, ipads etc. Enjoy talking to them because they are straightforward, very fun and nice, respectful of adults etc. In the early days even where we are, they had problems with the locals with a few encounters from people who assume that all Middle Easterners are Muslims during the Kenyan messiah’s reign.
IT is always prudent to be careful with all neighbors regardless of race.
My Persian friends encountered this wariness more so than, say you and I would be toward each other. Where they used to live it wasn’t so much of a problem because the refugees were able to afford rents in a few areas and they were mostly housed among their own kinfolks and other immigrants. It is unfortunate that there is the stigma ‘middle east’, ‘chinese’, whatever it is that the inferior rulers of the world confer on to their own kinfolks. Everywhere. My own family were not happy I have always trusted these friends of mine. Turned out these days they don’t say anything negative when I tell them how well my friends are doing, etc because I would have much to throw back at them, (which I will not do). I keep on praying for them every day since earlier on in life to make it a duty. Never to say ‘I told you so’, or ‘Don’t you trust me’ .. that kind of thing because of, or regardless of anything to do with friends. how I live my life … not even if I was maligned or gossiped about. The last thing I want to hear is for someone I love to tell me what someone else I loved said some bad things about me. Life so easy can become complicated.
