R.E.M is a band from Georgia. This song was written in 1987. Did you ever notice the lyrics?
That’s great, it starts with an earthquake,
Birds and snakes, an aeroplane
Lenny Bruce is not afraid.
Eye of a hurricane,
Listen to yourself churn
World serves its own needs,
Regardless of your own needs.
Feed it up a knock, speed,
Grunt no, strength no.
Ladder structure clatter with fear of height, down height.
Wire in a fire, represent the seven games
In a government for hire
And a combat site.
Left her, wasn’t coming in a hurry with the furries
Breathing down your neck.
Team by team reporters baffled, Trump, tethered crop.
Look at that low plane!
Fine then.
Uh oh, overflow, population, common group, but it’ll do.
Save yourself,
Serve yourself.
World serves its own needs,
Listen to your heart bleed. Tell me with the rapture and the
Reverent in the right
Right.
You vitriolic, patriotic, slam, fight, bright
Light, feeling pretty psyched.
It’s the end of the world as we know it.
It’s the end of the world as we know it.
It’s the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.
‘Wire in a fire, represent the seven games
In a government for hire
And a combat site.’
“Team by team reporters baffled, Trump, tethered crop“
Wordman?
From @NoneOfYourBusiness in the YouTube comments:
“For those here who care, this video shows a kid playing in his house that was torn apart by a tornado digging in the mess of random stuff all over the place making some sense of it and picking up what he might keep. He kept the dog and his skateboard. He’s young, soon to be a man and full of hope and he will rebuild his future. This song isn’t depressing and isn’t about the end of the world. Its about change. The lyrics are a mess of random stuff that Humanity must make sense of, pick up what it might keep and go forward.”
That’s why Billy Joel’s “We didn’t start the fire” including Fall out boys newer version of the same song resonates, everything is cyclical because humans never change.
My favorite adaptation is Karl Sagans “The Pale Blue Dot.”
A friend pointed out the lyrics of “Tom Sawyer” by Rush.
They said, Trump is Tom Sawyer.
After listening to the song and reading the lyrics, I agree.
Though his mind is not for rent
Don’t put him down as arrogant
His reserve, a quiet defense
Riding out the day’s events
No, his mind is not for rent
To any god or government
Always hopeful, yet discontent
He knows changes aren’t permanent
But change is
Only detail you’re missing is the guy who wrote it, Neal Peart, openly hated Donald Trump.
re: “the guy who wrote it, Neal Peart, openly hated Donald Trump.”
Ex post facto? After the fact – also anachronistic fallacy – fallacious time line (event B actually occurred after event A, not before event A.)
Love that song and, We didn’t start the fire.
Holy crap?!?!
It’s “Team by team, reporters baffled, trumped, teathered, cropped”.
Sometimes a pipe is just a pipe.
I mean, what is the suggestion here? That in 1987, 29 year before Trump ran for President, the band R.E.M. had some mystical knowledge of the 2020’s? Let’s not be crazy and conspiratorial here. The world is crazy enough.
I think he just liked the lyrics.
That said, REM is made up of NeverTrumpers if I recall correctly.
Hardcore leftists is more like it.
The don’t believe in God.
Their frontman, Michael Stipe; is a quasi – communist.
Sundance catches things that most miss. That’s the reason I read this blog.
“The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead” by XTC is more applicable to Trump:
Peter Pumpkinhead came to town
Spreading wisdom and cash around
Fed the starving and housed the poor
Showed the Vatican what gold’s for
But he made too many enemies
Of the people who would keep us on our knees
Hooray for Peter Pumpkin
Who’ll pray for Peter Pumpkinhead?
Oh my!
Love XTC, really good reference.
starring richard branson and other globalists, but I digress
it’s my favorite song of theirs, from my favorite album of theirs (Black Sea)
Outstanding recall !! I’m a massive fan of Andy Partridge …
That’s my favorite XTC song.
The irony, of course, is the songwriter was thinking about a left wing socialist who redistributes wealth, who “showed the Vatican what gold’s for.”
But yes – the description of the populist hero Peter Pumpkinhead is 100% analogous to President Trump. “Lies and sex scandals failed outright …”
Mostly R: Did you ever read Abraham Lincoln’s Lyceum Address in 1838? If not, you might think to do it.
Thrasher, please quote me the lines from the actual Lyceum Address that you are referring to and what they mean to you, and I’ll discuss. Please don’t send me the lines you read in a Facebook post attributing lines to the Lyceum Address that have been going on around for a few years among conspiracy theorists.
Do you believe Michael Stipe of REM had supernatural insights into Trump’s eventual presidency? That Lincoln had supernatural insights into the future BLM and Antifa rioters? What are you saying? Don’t be cryptic.
Didn’t the Union burn Atlanta?
Hardly, but it makes a great story.
Just a message from Cosmic coincidence Control. A term coined by the man who ran all the militaries research on dolphins John Lillie
I’m a massive fan of Beck … and in many of his songs he’s just making up nonsensical lyrics that sound good together … such as Loser. Beck was exercising his LA white boy rap skills. Most of the song is nonsense. But it sure made him a Bongload of $$$$
In the time of chimpanzees I was a monkey
Butane in my veins and I’m out to cut the junkie
With the plastic eyeballs, spray-paint the vegetables
Dog food stalls with the beefcake pantyhose
Kill the headlights and put it in neutral
Stock car flamin’ with a loser and the cruise control
Baby’s in Reno with the vitamin D
Got a couple of couches, sleep on the love-seat
Someone came in sayin’ I’m insane to complain
About a shotgun wedding and a stain on my shirt
Don’t believe everything that you breathe
You get a parking violation and a maggot on your sleeve
So shave your face with some mace in the dark
Savin’ all your food stamps and burnin’ down the trailer park
Yo, cut it
Soy un perdedor
I’m a loser baby, so why don’t you kill me?
(Double-barrel buckshot)
Soy un perdedor
I’m a loser baby, so why don’t you kill me?
Forces of evil in a bozo nightmare
Ban all the music with a phony gas chamber
‘Cause one’s got a weasel and the other’s got a flag
One’s on the pole, shove the other in a bag
With the rerun shows and the cocaine nose-job
The daytime crap of the folksinger slob
He hung himself with a guitar string
A slab of turkey-neck and it’s hanging from a pigeon wing
You can’t write if you can’t relate
Trade the cash for the beef for the body for the hate
And my time is a piece of wax falling on a termite
That’s choking on the splinters
Soy un perdedor
I’m a loser baby, so why don’t you kill me?
(Get crazy with the cheeze whiz)
Soy un perdedor
I’m a loser baby, so why don’t you kill me?
(Drive-by body pierce)
Yo, bring it on down
(I’m a driver, I’m a winner)
(Things are gonna change I can feel it)
Soy un perdedor
I’m a loser baby, so why don’t you kill me?
(I can’t believe you)
Soy un perdedor
I’m a loser baby, so why don’t you kill me?
Soy un perdedor
I’m a loser baby, so why don’t you kill me?
(Sprechen Sie deutsch, baby?)
Soy un perdedor
I’m a loser baby, so why don’t you kill me?
(Know what I’m sayin’?
If this was the late Jeff Beck… now you’re talking.
LOL I had a “who’s on first” conversation explaining the difference between Beck and Jeff Beck to a roommate in the early 1990’s
I do not believe it has anything to do with REM. Remember, God works in mystical ways.
I believe God works in mysterious ways, but at the same time I call out stupid, inaccurate stuff. It’s far more important that this site remain credible.
Put down Hunter’s crack pipe.

Speaking of Hunter…I believe Captain Beefheart wrote this with him in mind in 1972:
Musicians have notoriously declared they are not writing the songs . . . they are writing themselves.
If you’re looking for an ounce of sense in a Michael Stipe lyric, you’re wasting your time.
Yep

This song is over 30 years old. I don’t get it. I didn’t even like R.E.M. in my heyday.

Who’s fooling who? Everyone alive, and some dead, know the lyrics to this Johnny Rivers classic are, “Secret Asian Man”!
Side note: A not too shabby Johnny Rivers, live, singing and playing lead guitar at the Whiskey A Go Go!
oh dear, boogystew!😂

Oh man–never heard that one before! I’ll never get watery bible out of my head now 😂

they did!😁
AGENT
Secret Agent Man was a mid-sixties TV series.
It was preceded by Danger Man TV series staring Patrick McGoohan.
Late 60’s came The Prisoner TV series again with Patrick McGoohan. I was quite young when I saw The Prisoner and that paranoia against the government has stayed with me!
McGoohan had an amazing career. He could have been James Bond, but he repeated turned down the role evidently on moral grounds.
He played the veterinarian father to the little Scottish girl who loved Thomasina. I just saw that movie for the first time a few months ago. The scene of Thomasina going to Cat Heaven is worth the price of admission. I thought the small effort to portay the dad as something of a hard case was undermined by Thomasina always having a place at the family dinner table.
I remember seeing Thomasina when it come out I think in 1964(?). I was 4 and too young to understand what was going on. It was a scary, emotional, complicated story that I didn’t understand but it still haunts me!
Hate to say it but this was a lip synched rendition. They did that alot in the ’60’s variety shows. No other musicians and instruments shown on screen. Even when the full band would be present – speakers not shown give it away. Still there were times they did have the full “live” rendition.
Still a great song!
I saw Rivers along with Roy Orbison at the Chicago theater and they both sounded better than their records. Very professional singers and musicians.
Have you ever listened to the lyrics to “Californication” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers?
Probably not the musical taste of a lot of Treepers, but some of it sounds prophetic.
Saw that posted somewhere the other day. Eye opening!

That’s why various nations who have orbited the Moon have taken photographs of the different Lunar landing sites. The bottoms of the Lunar landers are still there as are the space buggies. You can see the tire tracks across the Lunar surface. Pretty good special effects and dedication for Hollywood to go to all that time and trouble to land on the Moon and cover up the whole charade.
It seems as if too many people are repeatedly watching Capricorn One, the sci-fi “thriller” from the late 70s in which the first manned mission to Mars was done on a soundstage. Besides, it would be nearly impossible for the thousands of people involved (both NASA and private contractors) in the Apollo Project to remain silent about “staged” lunar landings, someone would have talked over the years. If you have the opportunity sometime, scour the interwebs for a video from about 20 years ago or so of a moon landing denier confronting Buzz Aldrin about his trip to the Moon. The denier keeps trying to goad Aldrin into ‘fessing up about actually being on the Moon yada yada yada and, after initial restraint; Aldrin cold – cocks the putz with a right cross to the chin. Keep in mind that Aldrin was in his 70s at the time. LOL
Though I like some of this pop music, I don’t discount the possibility that satanic spirit(s) influence these people and/or use them as conduits for their agenda.
I got that album on vinyl, and cassette for my Walkman, for Christmas that year. It is the last REM record for me, they got way too commercial. The song does stick with one over the years.
Ministry’s Thieves from 1989 is a good one too.
I loved Ministry! Long time ago in my college days.
Train–Calling All Angels
I need a sign to let me know you’re here
All of these lines are being crossed over the atmosphere
I need to know that things are gonna look up
‘Cause I feel us drowning in a sea spilled from a cup
When there is no place safe and no safe place to put my head
When you feel the world shake from the words that are said
And I’m calling all angels
And I’m calling all you angels
And I won’t give up if you don’t give up
I won’t give up if you don’t give up
I won’t give up if you don’t give up
I won’t give up if you don’t give up
I need a sign to let me know you’re here
‘Cause my TV set just keeps it all from being clear
I want a reason for the way things have to be
I need a hand to help build up some kind of hope inside of me
And I’m calling all angels
And I’m calling all you angels
When children have to play inside so they don’t disappear
While private eyes solve marriage lies ’cause we don’t talk for years
And football teams are kissing Queens and losing sight of having dreams
In a world that what we want is only what we want until it’s ours
And I’m calling all angels
And I’m calling all you angels
Train canceled on the Boy Scouts Jamboree years ago over gays. I won’t listen to them since then. My family went to the Jamboree and Three Doors Down came instead!

Are they Christian?

Reverent is uppercase, too.
In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump…. 1 Cor 15:52
I don’t think they’re Christians.
Honestly, in Hollywood, it is more likely they’re, or the songwriter, are influenced by demons. Demons know more about the Bible than men…

“Losing my Religion ”
Not Christian.
Compelling beats, sticky lyrics.
They call it “en CHANT ment” for a reason.
On the surface, I like REM, and their greatest hits are the music of one of what Sundance would call a link in the chain of my life for me.
But looking at that music video tonight, for the first time, I’m getting visual hits of child porn and a Marina Abramovic photo of a young boy naked from the waist up with her standing behind him – not to mention the linkin park / Sound of Freedom vibe of a kid posing for a picture while holding a picture (whose picture is that)?
There’s probably a lot in this video to analyze.
I’m with the squinty eyed dog.
From what I recall it was based on a southern saying to be “at your wits end”
https://external-content.duckduckgo.com/ip3/storyofsong.com.ico
The phrase “losing my religion” is an expression from the southern region of the US that means losing one’s temper or “at my wit’s end,” meaning as if things were going so bad you could lose your faith in God. “Losing your religion” over a person, could mean that you’re losing faith in that particular person. Michael Stipe

My very favorite songs that came out of my era, which include mind numbing coincidences to now are ” Crime of The Century” by Supertramp., and the entire album ‘Animals’ by Pink Floyd. Prophetic indeed.
You have to watch out there’s dogs about.
Favorite verse, from ‘Dogs”:
And after a while, you can work on points for style
Like the club tie, and the firm handshake
A certain look in the eye and an easy smile
You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to
So that when they turn their backs on you,
You’ll get the chance to put the knife in
You gotta keep one eye looking over your shoulder

The 70’s concert circuits were great times.
Summerfest in Milwaukee was 2 weeks of constant music.
I completely agree, I saw Three Dog Night a couple of times, Fleetwood Mac, Steve Miller, and the Who when Keith Moon was still alive.. One group I wish I could have seen was Supertramp though.
Got to see them twice.

R.E.M. is very much against President Trump.
“R.E.M. Lashes Out at President Trump for Mocking Democrats With ‘Everybody Hurts’
FEBRUARY 17, 2019 2:04 PM EST
Rock band R.E.M probably couldn’t predict their early ’90s hit song “Everybody Hurts” would be put to political use in 2019. When it was, they were not happy about it.
The episode began on Friday afternoon, when President Trump retweeted a video meme. The clip, created by Trump-supporting meme-maker Carpe Donktum, showed Democratic lawmakers like Senators Bernie Sanders and Kamala Harris looking stoic during the President’s State of the Union address. The video was set to R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts.”
R.E.M. was immediately critical about Trump’s use of their song to taunt his political opponents. The band’s official Twitter account tweeted its displeasure on Friday night, referencing the song “World Leader Pretend.”
“Congress, media–ghost this faker!!! Love, R.E.M.” the band tweeted.
…
This is not the first run-in between the President and the highly-successful rock band. Trump used R.E.M.’s hit song “It’s the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)” at a 2015 political rally, a move that earned swift condemnation from the band.
“We do not authorize or condone the use of our music at this political event,” the band wrote in a Facebook post following the event. They also noted that “the media and the American voter should focus on the bigger picture, and not allow grandstanding politicians to distract us from the pressing issues of the day and of the current Presidential campaign.”

Condemned by the organ grinders monkey. Once the organs cranked and the coins tossed, the monkey don’t matter.
Rush Limbaughs theme comes to mind. He tossed a lot of coins at that monkey
“My City Was Gone” by the Pretenders. Chrissie Hynde was initially upset by Rush’s use of that tune as his theme but relented. She did state that her late father (who she adored) was a fan of the Maha Rushie.
All around me are staring faces…

Everybody Hurts will always be the first thing I think of when it comes to REM. Who did the video – carpe dunkdum maybe??Haters were pissed but what else is new

As far as prescient entertainment I present the dumbest movie ever made, Idiocracy. Fetterman is literally a character.
Idiocracy is practically a Documentary. I’m wondering if V for Vendetta will prove to be prescient.

Is that a reference to Donald Trump? Most of the lyrics are nonsense.
How about Red Hot Chili Peppers Song ‘Californication?
https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cxesx5HIypo/?igshid=NjZiM2M3MzIxNA==
Personally, I believe the lyrics to the song Ball of Confusion, by the Temptations, is as relevant today as when it was written. Probably more so.
Noticed them, pondered them, and reflected on them. Like many others here, I remember when this song was released, and pondered the lyrics as compared to current society, and reflected on the words compared to the Word, and realized once again that I have influence, not control. He is in control. All we have to do is keep our focus on him.
There is a great picture of President Trump sitting at a table smiling wistfully at the camera while people are in motion around him. It must be multi exposures.
I like to think of him in that picture, which perfectly captured him being like the eye of the hurricane, remaining calm and steadfast as chaos happens all around him.
I don’t know where to find it, but it’s been posted here before.
It was posted yesterday!
Try _THESE_ lyrics on for size:
Tom MacDonald: The System
Welcome to the world, baby boy, I’ll paint you red and white and blue
The indoctrination starts as soon as you come out the womb
Pretty quick we’ll make you stupid with curriculums at school
And if the classroom doesn’t do the trick, we’ll make you watch the news
Pick your team, right or left, pick the red pill or the blue
You can vote, but even if you win, still everyone will lose
Don’t forget to buy designer because Gucci makes you cool
We prioritize material belongings over truth
Get a job that you can’t stand so you can buy some cans of food
Go overseas and die for freedom, there’s some oil we could use
Our democracy exists so that you think that you could choose
But our algorithms make you do what we want you to do
What’s the problem, you’re depressed? Society has you confused?
We got medication for you that you’ll probably abuse
Go get married to a lady who also don’t have a clue
And pump out a few babies that are just the same as you
[Chorus]
Welcome to the system, everyone’s a victim
Doesn’t matter if you’re black or white, it hates you all
Here inside the system, violence is a symptom
Fighting for what’s right, but somehow everyone is wrong
{verse two}
Welcome to the world, baby girl, I’ll paint you pink if that’s okay
We’ll encourage self-destruction through the music that you play
We divided all the men by tryin’ politics and race
And honestly, it’s workin’ awesome, so for you we’ll do the same
Never teachin’ you to love yourself, inject you full of hate
Objectify your sexuality then blame you for the rape
And weaponize the differences that make our men and women great
And just to screw with you, erase the genders, everyone’s the same
We’ll empower you with rights to vote and fight for equal pay
Then have the men turn into women and you’ll fight for them again
But you thought you had it figured out, but everything has changed
Welcome to the system, bitch, please enjoy your stay
Here’s a Bible and a bottle of the cheapest booze we make
Find a man who can take care of you to fill the holes we made
Buy a house and settle down, fulfill your duty, procreate
And make a couple babies who will also do the same
Tom is a mighty warrior

Last verses of The Call’s “The Walls Came Down” (1983):
I don’t think there are any Russians.
And there ain’t no Yanks.
Just corporate criminals
Playing with tanks.
There are so many songs out there with lyrics that are prophetic, REM is old news. Losing my religion, spot on.
Red Hot Chili Peppers, califorication. Mega death, symphony of destruction. People these are old old songs like Elvis old. This nothing new is ancient material.
I don’t think they are prophetic as much as what they sang about was already true back then. They knew.
Funny thing is that most leftists that saw Bushs’ illegal war for what it was are now totally blind to the crimes of the Biden / Obama syndicate.
Same with music.
I guess it was more about the opposition to the man and less about opposition to oppression.
Both right and left turn a blind eye to their *own* party’s lies and deceptions. People seem to only recognize what the *other* party is doing wrong.
And both sides are exactly right because, whether we see it or not, *everybody* in DC is eventually revealed to be a snake. They have to be an integral part of the UNiparty construct, wink-wink, or else those machines would never allow them to win “elections.”
Clearing out the spiderwebs from the corners?
Possibly meaning the Trumps Spoke of in Revelation. 1 When the Lamb broke the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.
2 And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them. (Revelation 8:1, NASB).
Interesting. Forgot about that song. Hardly listen to that band, even way back then. BUT for whatever reason when every thing was gray and depressing in 2020 with the masks and the distancing I put their Shiny Happy People song on and blasted it loud as it can go as I drove around. Shiny happy people wearing masks, shiny happy people six feet apart…
Except in the original language of the Bible Trump and trumpets weren’t similar.
I always liked the Philly local band called The *Hooters who got a record deal in the 80s after co-writing “Time After Time” with Cyndy Lauper.
They have two songs of interest:
“All You Zombies” chorus started resonating with me again during the plandemic:
“All you zombies hide your faces
All you people in the street
All you sittin’ in high places
The rain’s gonna fall on you.”
And another tune, “Blood From a Stone,” actually seems to be about the gummint’s thieving ways.
*Their name is not in reference to female anatomy – it’s what the engineer called the melodica one plays.
Yup, the melodica is colloquially known as a “hooter”.
How did they know, in 1987?
Well, they mention Trump and it was written in 1987.
Except they don’t mention Trump.
it’s a rousing song AND a new dance craze
The Funky Western Civilization by Tonio K.
Well there’s a riot in the courthouse
There’s a fire in the street
There’s a sinner bein’ trampled
By a thousand pious feet
There’s a baby every minute
Bein’ born without a chance
Now don’t that make you want
To jump right up and start to dance?
Let’s do the Funky
The Funky Western Civilization
It’s really spunky
It’s just like summertime vacation
You just grab your partner by the hair
Throw her down and leave her there
They put Jesus on a cross
They put a hole in J.F.K.
They put Hitler in the driver’s seat
And looked the other way
Now they’ve got poison in the water
And the whole world in a trance
But just because we’re hypnotized
That don’t mean we can’t dance
This is the Funky
The Funky Western Civilization
It’s so so very spunky
It’s just like the summertime vacation
All’s you gotta do is find some little kid somewhere
Throw it way up in the air
Never mind the parents
Another great song – ‘New Dark Ages’ from the La Bomba album
New Dark Ages THE NEW DARK AGES
(Tonio K./George Conner)
darlin’, it’s a hard life if you’re lucky
ah, but it’s a short life if you’re not
the sheriff and the terrorist are both hungry
you spend all your time tryin’ not to get caught (in the crossfire)
it ain’t no joke
and it ain’t no lie
gangsters tell you what to think
what are you, the missing link?
wise up, welcome to the new dark ages
gangsters hangin’ round of every description
gangsters write your books and sing your songs
gangsters grin out of the television
gangsters on the couch and on the lawn
gangsters of love
gangsters in the government
they have told us what to think
what am i, the missing link?
wise up, welcome to the new dark ages
you can face it now, or face it later
you will have to face it either way
you should hate them with a perfect hatred
take that long night’s journey into day
it isn’t up to me
it isn’t up to you (we don’t make the rules)
false is false and true is true
only one thing we can do
shine the light into the new dark ages
“Everybody Knows” by Leonard Cohen.
Sundane mentioned it, I think, several years ago. I first heard about from one of his posts.
I’m gonna go back to a better era, message, and way better dancing:
Screw all that mopey, whiney, beta NPC bs!
killer, killer song
killer rhythm guitar parts, funky as all get-out … they’re mixed down here, more evident on the studio recording
thx, Day
Right around the same time, just a year later, the black lesbian leftist folk-rocker Tracy Chapman emerged with her self-titled Grammy Winning album. The opening song “Talkin’ ‘Bout A Revolution has these lovely lines:

Poor people gonna rise up
And get their share
Poor people gonna rise up
And take what’s theirs
No doubt lots of lefties who were around then thought that this pro-crime song was awesome.
Talk about prophetic. We’re getting it good and hard all over, especially in the Bay Area right now.
Careful what you wish for, lefties…
Laurie Anderson’s O Superman was pretty accurate on post 2001 life in 1982.
O Superman. O judge. O Mom and Dad. Mom and Dad.
O Superman. O judge. O Mom and Dad. Mom and Dad.
Hi. I’m not home right now. But if you want to leave a
message, just start talking at the sound of the tone.
Hello? This is your Mother. Are you there? Are you
coming home?
Hello? Is anybody home?
Well, you don’t know me,
but I know you.
And I’ve got a message to give to you.
Here come the planes.
So you better get ready. Ready to go. You can come
as you are, but pay as you go. Pay as you go.
And I said: OK. Who is this really? And the voice said:
This is the hand, the hand that takes. This is the
hand, the hand that takes.
This is the hand, the hand that takes.
Here come the planes.
They’re American planes. Made in America.
Smoking or non-smoking?
And the voice said: Neither snow nor rain nor gloom
of night shall stay these couriers from the swift
completion of their appointed rounds.
‘Cause when love is gone, there’s always justice.
And when justive is gone, there’s always force.
And when force is gone, there’s always Mom. Hi Mom!
So hold me, Mom, in your long arms. So hold me,
Mom, in your long arms.
In your automatic arms. Your electronic arms.
In your arms.
So hold me, Mom, in your long arms.
Your petrochemical arms. Your military arms.
In your electronic arms.
Things flow downstream: Art, culture, politics, the world we commonly perceive. Jesus starts and finishes it. Auny Entity will be Grandma.
Tina Turner, Mad Max After the Thunderdome.
A better version, IMO.
I used to like R.E.M. in the 80s but I quit liking them by the time they churned out Automatic for the People. Everybody Hurts is one of my least favorite songs of all time. To me it’s pretty much symptomatic of everything wrong with our culture. They played a show for this tour in Boise and Stipe got caustic with the audience for singing along. 13 years later a friend dragged me to one of their shows and Stipe was shouting for people to sing along. I guess by that point he needed the support. They also had a bunch of local Seattle musicians backstage playing guitar. I don’t have a problem with that, but I always think it’s funny when they have to hide the musicians.
Know a number of people that used to hang out with the Athens music scene crowd. B-52s, R.E.M.
Stipe always seemed to have young guys ever present. Generally they were around 18-19, just inside
bounds for legal.
La fin de siecle
I thought for sure this song was from the 90s.
But any song recorded after 1975 is typically off my radar.
Songs of the early sixties are too close to today. Just a few from my collection, Lynyrd Skynyrd, God and Guns, Kinks, Black Messiah, Frank Zappa, Jefferson Starship, many more but this is a start if you have let your music library lack.
I will just say this, in 2004 in Germany for their live album Perfect Square, he introduces a song and says basically how difficult it is being an American. The lyrics referring to Ronald Reagan and US policy originally written in the 80’s. He pulled it back out for Bush. The song is called Bad Day.
It didn’t quite get the heat the Dixie Chicks got overseas because they were taking on Bush using his name specifically. Stipe was inferring to Bush in 2004 not using his name
This 80’s song from “Lords of the New Church” -Open your Eyes – makes more sense now than ever.
