Hawaii Gov Takes Dramatic Action To Solve Housing Crisis. But Is He Going Too Far?
Critics question the decision to suspend laws to streamline the approval process for development.
Hawaii could see construction of 50,000 new homes over the next three to five years for residents of all income levels if an executive order issued Monday by Gov. Josh Green achieves its intended purpose. The order suspends a half dozen state and county laws, primarily focusing on land use, historic preservation and environmental review.
Titled “Emergency Proclamation Relating to Housing,” the measure invokes a state law giving the governor broad power to suspend laws that impede a response to emergencies such as natural disasters or the coronavirus pandemic.
In this case, the emergency is a shortage of housing and the response is to lower regulatory barriers to building homes.
It was a drastic response to what the governor has framed as an existential threat to the island state, which has seen an outmigration that averaged 20 people per day last year as residents unable to afford the high cost of living fled to the mainland.

Usually, some combination of environmental, building code and insurance regulations have been pre-positioned making it too expensive to rebuild and prohibitively expensive to re-insure. The owner has no place to live or do business yet is still on the hook for taxes, mortgage and/or cleanup expense.
What makes regulatory taking even more sinister is that insurance classifications and rates are soon increased in surrounding areas. I have seen urban flood zones created that drive insurance payments so high that homeowners cannot afford them and are foreclosed

Just yesterday, I was behind a Tesla with the Texas license plate of “IH8TOIL” (or something similar to this).
As I sat there at the red light, I noticed the plate was covered with a plastic film. The plate had a nice plastic frame that had the owner’s favorite sports team logo on it. I started to wonder how much of a Tesla was made from oil.
Of course, a Tesla in Texas uses electricity that is created from burning natural gas at the power plant. That’s just for starters.
Then, the plastics in the car, polypropylene and polyurethane components are many. Dashboard, steering wheel, shatterproof glass, trim, wheel wells, door components, frame components, hose connectors, and all the non-metal components in the engine components.
Then there is the aluminum. Lots of aluminum in any car, including a Tesla. Aluminum production (bauxite refinement) alone consumes 3% of the world’s energy each year. That’s huge. Much of this aluminum comes from China, which means the energy consumes comes from coal. Get rid of petroleum industry, lose aluminum. Lose aluminum and lose the light-weight frame and mechanics needed to keep battery consumption low.
And, finally, the batteries. All that lithium needs to be extracted from the Earth. 200,000 pounds of Earth moved per battery. That’s about 100 truckloads of dirt and rock per battery. And each Tesla has a lot of batteries. Do the math.
Anyhow, hate oil all you want. If it actually was to disappear, we would all literally be living mostly naked in near-cave-like environments.
I don’t advocate for the banning of petroleum, but I’d say it could use true competition.

Its not just the ballots, or even primarily the ballots, its the mail in envelopes that they need, in order to inject the ballots into the system, and its the phantom voters, put on the voting rolls, so that the County will mail out the ballot envelopes TO these phantom voters, which then must be collected, and transported TO a central location, where marked ballots can be stuffed into the mail in envelopes, the envelopes signed, and then these envelopes inserted into the tabulation center.
A tabulation center where MOST of the workers are full time TEMPORARY workers, staffed up JUST for the election, and so not part of the cheating.
Hence “Water leak, y’all go home now!”.
Point being, it IS COMPLICATED, to “pull off” a Nationwide election theft, and even more complicated when the cheaters have to overcome a significant inherent lead by the opponent, and far more complicated if you include factoring in not having the cheat be obvious.

I got on the absentee ballot board in my area in 2020, and was paid to make sure everything was done legally. I read the laws, too, so no one could bamboozle me into doing what ‘they’d always done.’
Never before had they followed the law and actually closed the ballot box and removed the ballots at 8pm and called it a night. I am not sure how this works constitutionally, if it even matters at this point … will have to see the wording and actions vs the Constitution. This will go to the Supreme Court as one can count on the the Federal 9th District Rubber Stamping the decision. Even a slow roll of these types of actions can have an adverse impact, via the Local Federal Courts acting slowly as well as NOT approving injunctions to stop enactment. The Federal Courts will claim, States Rights and no Standing … just like 2020.
Remember … it’s the Electoral Votes that count NOT NATIONAL vote count for both Primaries (per RNC & DNC Party Rules) and General Election. American workers are demanding almost $80,000 a year to take a new job
The amount of money most workers want now to accept a job reached a record high this year, a sign that inflation is alive and well at least in the labor market.
According to the latest New York Federal Reserve employment survey released Monday, the average “reservation wage,” or the minimum acceptable salary offer to switch jobs, rose to $78,645 during the second quarter of 2023.
That’s an increase of about 8% from just a year ago and is the highest level ever in a data series that goes back to the beginning of 2014. Over the past three years, which entails the Covid era, the level has risen more than 22%.
The number is significant in that wages increasingly have been recognized as a driving force in inflation.

I noticed the medical,& car insurance went up after NAFTA opened up the borders and Mexican/Central American illegals starting coming into my area, resulting in some hospital closures, increased costs, and lower quality of service. If their are “free” payers, the insurance/medical companies have to start charging the payers more to compensate. You’re correct. I have a colleague in Pacifica, CA (just south of SF) who bought a Tesla and put solar on his roof. However, when ‘brown-outs’ were occurring a few years ago, he was stuck at home with a dead Tesla for a couple of days. Why? Well, it seems his roof panels were generating energy that was being sent back to the utility company for distribution; he wasn’t able to directly charge his Tesla from the solar panels on his roof! What the heck? Still stuck to ‘the man’ and not ‘off the grid’.

The power demands are solvable even with our current grid situation. But none of this is intended move us from gas/diesel energy to electrical energy. Electric EVs can never scale to America’s personal-vehicle based economy we have now. Gasoline and diesel give Americans a choice in where to work, where to live and the freedom of movement. EVs are a transition to urban encampments.
So, first “incentivize” EVs while make driving with gas and diesel unaffordable. Then those who cannot afford a new EV move to housing projects close to jobs. Those who can afford the EVs eventually move out of their homes, to the outskirts of the urban centers within the range of an EV. Then as light rail and public transit expands to the outskirts, EV charging and road access will be regulated.

Meanwhile, CA is offering special programs to subsidize installation of charging stations in precisely the neighborhoods where no one can afford electric vehicles, and equipment is mostly likely to be vandalized or stolen.

I arrived at a gas refueling stop at the parking lot of a supermarket. There is a secure kiosk where you can pay cash for fuel in advance via a bank-type sliding drawer where you walk up. Unfortunately, the small kiosk was unmanned without explanation.
I left and went to a convenience market where I could go inside and prepay for fuel with cash.
Unless it’s a large amount, I hate paying with a credit or debit card. But some stores now make it very difficult (if not impossible) to pay with cash. I’ve noticed that most self checkout machines don’t accept cash anymore.
