Shadow Banning is the term given to social media backroom activity that uses computer algorithms to shrink user account engagement without informing the user. The process involves putting friction upon the account to block amplification and control engagement. The user doesn’t see the process, they just notice a severe drop in the engagement by other users on the platform.
Last year, Elon Musk promised to start letting the account holders see what level of friction they were assigned to by letting the users see their shadow ban status. However, that promise was never fulfilled. Musk was questioned about why the X platform, formerly known as Twitter, has not followed through on the transparency pledge.
Continuing the process of pretending not to know things, Musk says transparency is hard.
(Washington) – The long-hated process of shadow-banning on X, formerly Twitter, soon will change, according to owner Elon Musk.
At the Viva Tech conference this week, the billionaire said he plans to address the issue soon. He said the company is working on a plan that will let people see if their account was affected by the Twitter system.
“Sorry it’s taking so long,” Mr. Musk posted. “There are so many layers of ‘trust & safety’ software that it often takes us hours to figure out who, how and why an account was suspended or shadow-banned. A ground up rewrite is underway that simplifies the X codebase dramatically.”
Shadow-banning is a practice where users have their accounts partially silenced without their knowledge. If users are shadow-banned, they can still post but they will notice engagement drops significantly. Since there is no way to officially know that a user is shadow-banned, the issue has been politicized. Conservative accounts consistently claimed they were shadow-banned for speaking out against vaccines or the 2020 election. (read more)
This statement from Musk follows on the heels of X-Corp CEO Linda Yaccarino saying, “If you are going to post something that is illegal or against the law, you’re gone. Zero tolerance. But more importantly, if you are going to post something that is lawful, but it’s awful, you get labeled. You get labeled, you get deamplified, which means it cannot be shared, and it is certainly demonetized. … So, they [advertisers] are protected from the risk of being next to that content.”…
It doesn’t take a deep thinker to understand why X-Corp (Twitter) would not want users to know the reason for their shadow banning or deamplification. Once people become aware of the content they generate that assigns them a label, the control units within X-corp then need to justify their labeling. Transparency runs counter to the intentions of those who control information; that’s why Musk has never followed through.
In the bigger picture, there are legal ramifications when this shadow banning, labeling and definition system is rolled out for the entire North American internet. This is the conversation taking place now in the closed-door meetings of DHS and the various organizations conscripted to develop the process.

When I actively participated in the Public Debate over School vouchers, 30-40 years ago, saw “our side” WIN the debate, despite the accusations of rascism, and other nonsensical objections of the “other side”, and then watched as “our negotiating team” (the Republicons) went behind closed doors and instead if negotiating the enemies surrender, they snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, announcing a bi-partisan compromise of “Charter Schools”.

YouTube is the worst. For years I have been watching my comments go dormant when every comment surrounding mine has 100s of likes and responses.
I was curious about this and opened another YT account and noticed that every comment I leave is immediately dropped to the 40th position on the comment list. Yet when I look at this from the account I left it in it’s sitting on top.
I’m not assuming every comment I post will blow up the internet, but it became clear that something was going on. Now I’ve confirmed it.

The leftism is in the language they use. Where they say “amplification” we would say DISTRIBUTION and DELIVERY. Where the latter says they are interfering with the normal process which is the scandal, the former suggests “not adding anything or providing value.”

And while I don’t believe Vivek has the guts to actually face down the IC the way Trump does, this is something that comes with AGE (Trump’s biggest asset!) where he becomes unafraid to die. Younger people have an inherent fear of death… well the smart ones do anyway. Maybe it would be more accurate to say having something more along the lines of a bushido brand of courage — the belief that one is already dead unlocks the ability to be fearless in action, daring and strategic execution. Being unafraid to fail removes all hesitancy to act and renders that person as “unpredictable” because the rules of the enemies’ intentions to sow fear and doubt completely fail. And more, it keeps the enemies off-balance and left with a sense of diminished power which causes them to PANIC and to become UNSTABLE.
Ever notice how calm Trump seems to be during all of this? That’s bushido in the way I understand it. And THAT is how he keeps the enemies in a state of rage and fear. It’s glorious.

I say all of this because Vivek’s ability to distill the STUPIDITY of the left and their strategy of “social movements” are quite superior in approach and delivery. It’s something we can all learn from. “Do you support the LGBTQ+..?” Vivek doesn’t say “no” he dismantles the notion that “LGBTQ+” is a group at all — they are ALL very different people with very different interests. And let’s face it, the Ls, Gs and Bs aren’t generally interested in influencing children the way the Ts and Qs appear to be. And we see this when they rage against their being restricted from venues involving children.
We should pay attention to the tools and words Vivek uses in our own potential battles. They are quite useful. So just because he “competes” with Trump (and I am not convinced he is in this to win or even to steal votes from Trump) let’s not discount the weapons he uses as we can use many of them ourselves.

Not making any excuses for Musk here, but we know the Twitter OS is massive and grew by accretion over many years. Untangling the mess is probably quite difficult. Recall when Musk himself was apparently shadowbanned AFTER he bought the company: His tweets weren’t getting the impressions or engagement they should. An engineer had the bad judgement to suggest people just weren’t interested in Elon’s tweets anymore. Musk fired him on the spot.

X/twitter also suspiciously added code to any news link that delays the launch of that link on the end users device/browser/app for 5 seconds. This was not a coding mistake. It was an obvious attempt to make end user experience driven away from clicking on news links …it was specifically aimed at big name news org…nyt, wapost, cnn, nbc, fox, etc.
within hours x/twitter removed that code and things went back to “normal”
no explanation was given and no have been issued about the reasons for this temporary action.

if you can put code in delaying news links by 5 seconds, you “condition” the typical anxious and impatient user to just stop clicking on links, citations and references…which you might think is a good idea, because as we know almost all news is crap and propaganda and is used to craft political and financial narratives and to conceal corruption and to influence elections.

I think this is a risk and my theory is that x/twitter was doing a trial run…to see what would actually happen…if users would just stop clicking on links. it might also be a way to threaten news orgs directly since there is definitely ad and marketing boycott against x/twitter that is organized by some of the largest news orgs. so there might be that also.
x/twitter is dying…and not slowly….the user base is stable…but they have no money coming in…losing money steadily and being very close to defaulting on loans.

And since much of that info is pushed out at the speed of light, it is no longer manageable for the average citizen to filter the streams effectively.
For example, twitter is 99.9% nonsense. Pawing through all the cruft to find the occasional nugget isn’t worth the effort for me.
So, I’ve found a half dozen reliable sources and check them each once or twice a day. This site is one of my top spots. Sundance does an admirable job of isolating a handful of stories every day that help me stay reasonably informed. So, Thanks, Sundance!
