“California outdoor enthusiast died Tuesday after collapsing following an hours-long hike in Death Valley National Park, the world’s hottest place.
The Los Angeles Times reported Friday that 71-year-old Steve Curry died of what officials believe were heat-related causes. His death occurred just hours after speaking to a Times reporter about hiking in the heat while he took a break for some rare shade under a metal interpretative sign.
“Why do I do it?” he said when asked why he hiked in such extreme conditions. “Why not?”
Hours later, Curry collapsed outside the restroom at Golden Canyon. A park visitor called 911 from a cellphone and rangers attempted to save him but were not able to do so, the newspaper reported.
“He went having accomplished something he wanted to do,” said Rima Evans Curry, his wife. “He wanted to go to Death Valley. He wanted to do a hike.”
The famed National Park that runs along part of central California’s border with Nevada is known as the hottest place on Earth and has recorded sweltering temperatures during a record-warm summer.
On Sunday, temperatures reached 128 degrees Fahrenheit (53 degrees Celsius) at Death Valley’s aptly named Furnace Creek, the National Weather Service said.

Millennials and Gen Z, you are right. You got screwed. You were told that you needed a 4-year degree to be successful. You were told to work hard in school so you could be accepted at the university of your choice. After all that hard work, Uncle Sam was there to pick up the tab, temporarily.
You were a child, and you needed guidance from adults. Instead of giving you that guidance, they let you take on debt, without a thought to how it would impact you when the debt became due. They let you choose a school and a major, without looking at the average income of your preferred career of choice. You were told to ‘find your passion’ while racking up debt and choosing majors that made you feel good but didn’t make you money.
Meanwhile, plumbers, carpenters, cleaning ladies, and those without degrees went to work every day to pay taxes that funded the loan for your education. Everyone in this scenario comes out a loser, with one exception: The Universities.
Tuition has more than doubled over the past 20 years. Why? Because the universities knew kids had access to unlimited funds to pursue education. They knew no one was going to sit down next to you and crunch the numbers.
Millennials and Gen Z- you were conned. So were taxpayers. Politicians and universities have jointly taken advantage of your youth and eagerness for life. They’ve taken advantage of society’s desire to educate our children and prepare them for success. We need to hold those that conned you, and taxpayers, accountable.

The universities also get guarantees on those loans from the govt. It’s a win win for them. They raise tuitions, raise salaries, raise fees, raise rent on living spaces because they can and rake in the money. Yeah the universities make out like bandits and we schmucks get propagandized that our kids NEED, MUST HAVE that premier college education for low paying career path in order to be the right ‘anyone.’
We let it happen and then send our kids to these price gouging woke universities which basically bankrupts them for life, all thanks to we the parents who encourage it for some strange reason. Americans are very easy to convince they have to buy the so called top of the line, most expensive, brand name merchandise in order to be in with the cool people and the elites. Same with colleges. A state school provides as great an education as an Ivy League university does and in a much more affordable manner.
Who’s at fault here? Just about all of us who have ignored these facts for such a long time and fail to recognize that better jobs just might not need a uber expensive college education.

He didn’t in a hospital where once they get their hooks into you they will torture you to death alone and helpless. During the covidiousy I told my wife if I get sick let me die at home and not tied to a bed with a tube crammed down my throat. I nearly died in 2019 from idiot MDs so I wanted to make darn sure they didn’t get a hold of me again.
Sounds like he has had a full and interesting life.

Days of Overnight Trips thru Cornfields.
I live in the next valley over to the east and we’ve had 114 F for the last week and a half or so.
A couple of years ago, we had a 127 F.
Intelligent people stay inside after 8:00 AM.
The media keeps screaming 100 F+ temps but most of July and August here are over 100 F EVERY year and have been since forever.
It’s the same as dealing with the -50 F temps in Iowa, you stay inside.
Someone always has to tempt fate! Like running across a highway during peak traffic.
Last 2 days of mild temps here in St. Louis. Mid to upper 90’s next week.

No, it’s not the same as dealing with -50. It really doesn’t get -50 but ok -30. When it’s cold you can always put more clothes on, move a lot to increase body temp, and drink warm fluids.
At 120 degrees you can’t move, you likely are limited in fluids, and once you’re down to skin, you’re done.
I lived in Vegas in 1973 hottest day 116. You could hang out the washing and by the time you finished hanging, you could start taking it down. I was pregnant and was constantly wilting.
One of the negative results of easy transportation is that unskilled and unwise people can easily get themselves into locations and activities that they are not prepared for, not understanding their own limitations. It’s on the same continuum as endless selfies and facebook reports. Maybe they are unaware that life can be well-lived without an artificial audience….
Many years ago, a radio station in California sponsored a contest that was very simple: whoever drank the greatest amount of water in (a specified time period–an hour or whatever it was…)would win….. The winner died later the same day because his water intake was great enough to do this stuff:

We enjoyed backpacking with our young sons in the Sierra mountains in the 1970s. In those days (long before trail reservations were required), the only people who were on the trail in the high country were those who understood how to get there, how to follow poorly marked trails, and how to take care of themselves while they were there. Those were also the days when it was safe to drink directly from any mountain stream.
I suspect the people who subject themselves to Death Valley temps just to take a selfie also assume that the AC on their car will never falter and that they will not have car trouble of any kind (starting with over-heating????).
These are the same kind of yahoos who go for a drive in the winter in rural Minnesota when it’s 25 below zero (f)…and they leave for town at 5:30…90 minutes after it got dark…because they have to get one more Christmas gift and they are sick of being shut in the house with the kids. Well, all-righty, then….
Going out in your vehicle into areas that are remote and desolate in extreme heat, cold, and snow/rain are just not thinking correctly. Here in Las Vegas most of us just go inside and stay inside in July and August. We don’t take road trips, day trips, and run errands for hours on end. It’s just too hot.
Yep! Most of us turn into vampires July/August. And the temps the weather folks report are “In The Shade” temps. If you’re hiking in the desert…..it’s much hotter than reported in direct sunlight. You’re literally cooking your brain.
June was exceptional this year with it being the coolest since 1965. Now us here in Vegas will pay for that in July and August.
But I still love the desert.

I was seated at a demonstration of something (everything outside). We were all complaining about the heat. I mentioned I was so sluggish to lady seated beside me. I told her I had been drinking lots of water but “must still be dehydrated.”
She said, she was a nurse and to immediately buy a bag of potato chips, eat them. I did and in minutes, was feeling great. Lucky to have been seated next to her, I’d have kept drinking water.
We’ve gone mad with “hydrating”.
In my early 30s hauling hay in a hurry due to imminent rain I needed food and salt way more than water. It was close to passing out but I ate some crackers and was able to finish the load. I am smarter now. All the water in the world is useless in heat without salt and nutrition.
Spent a lot of time working on black rubber roofs where the micro-climate can MUCH hotter than ground level. First thing to hit the roof was my cooler full of chilled gatoraid. I don’t miss those days ! When you must drag a water hose with you and keep soaking your clothes it too hot LOL

What few people fail to understand, and I wish Death Valley would publicize better, is at a certain heat/dryness level a human cannot take in liquid at a high enough rate to replace the liquid they are losing through evaporation. Your body is literally mummifying.
Drinking lots of water can make things worse, because you are flushing electrolytes out of your system.
So called sports drinks don’t help because your stressed system cannot process and make the electrolytes available to your organs instantaneously.
Even here in Phoenix we have numerous deaths each year because people who are unfamiliar with the unique desert environment think that because they work out at the gym and are “athletic” they can hike steep trails in 100+ degree heat.
I’ve hiked Death Valley numerous times, always in winter months. It is a unique and awe inspiring place that, like all of nature, should be respected.
Not a great place for in independently undertaken personal fitness challenge.

Water is expensive in the desert ( and most of the west), it does not fall from the sky in great abundace like it does back east.
Who in their right mind, their left mind, or with a mind –would hike there in the summer? I have homes in both the lower and upper deserts in California. It kicks my butt to leave my air conditioned car to run into an air conditioned establishment as early as possible in the morning. I’m not hiking and climbing! Even briefly, it just takes a toll on your energy. 🏜️
I have students returning to school the second week of August. Teachers in our district are really upset – not because of us. Our classrooms are air conditioned. 🥵
Our students cannot be outside on the field, or P.E., or even just eating under covered areas with misters. They are just exhausted moving outside and then inside– from class to class.☀️

Strip the place back to its natural condition…then maybe they would think about how they are going to manage?

There are reasons we resist such foolishness as Celsius and the metric system here in the United States Celsius is based on freezing and boiling points of water. What’s useful about that other than in a laboratory? Think how much more useful Fahrenheit is. 0° to 100° are pretty much the parameters that life exists on our planet. If it’s under zero, you’re screwed. If it’s over 100, you’re screwed. Very practical.
It pretty easy to tell if it is just a little bit hot or kind of hot or Hot As Hell when you walk out the door.
You don’t need to check with the local weather girl to see what she says about the temp to decide whether or not it is a good idea to go on a hike alone in Death Valley that day.
The same thing applies in cold climates, you know when you walk outside.
Ever sauna and jump through a whole in the ice covered lake at -10? I have and it is not a death sentence. Doing it right is sitting in the sauna till you can’t stand it then with 2 spotters splash into the 3 foot deep water and get out quick. Then the magic starts.
By the way, wool socks required so you can walk on the ice.

Not the brightest person in the world! I always wanted to look into a volcano but would not do so if it were about to erupt. Why in heavens sake would even a fit 70 year old walk in death valley in the “dead” of summer! Suicide?
Do not look into a volcano….I looked into El Vulcan Irazu…once. Semi active in Costa Rica…filled with water….the smell from the sulfur made me ill for 2 days. I was 12….all the adults were doing it…so I figured it was safe…that was 1972…

I hike 14’ers in Colorado. Is it possible that 53 year old or someday 60 or 70 year old me could have a heart attack and die on the mountain? Yeah, possibly. When that happens, people will say “What was he thinking, hiking up a 60% incline at 13,000 feet at his age?”
The media will tsk tsk. And the people on the couch will read preachy lectures about how dangerous it is. What was I doing up there? Put it in bold print on my epitaph.

My husband always says he’s going to run up to death, and that’s a good attitude to have.
I’m a bit less adventurous, and prefer to take on challenges where the odds are in my favor.

Do you hike our 14’ers in the winter in the middle of a freezing cold blizzard?
I snowboard on 12,000’ peaks. There was a moment I had last winter. I was sitting on a ridge just off the T-bar at around 11,500’ in gale force winds and heavy snow. As I strapped in I sat there in the wind and the snow and near-zero visibility for a minute and wondered, “How many more years of this do I have left in me?”
Then I shrugged and jumped off the cornice into the bowl. When it’s your time, it’s your time.
Everyone has a different comfort level of risk they’ll tolerate. But I think too many people just sort of give up.
Anyway, I hope his last thoughts were “If this is it, I’m glad it was here and not some nursing home.”

Curry probably should not have cut his Wilderness Training class on the day the chapter on “Treating Heat Related Illnesses and How to Avoid Being a Victim of Them.” was being reviewed.
This guy who died in Death Vally might not fit this situation.
But we have a friend who runs a wilderness training center and teaches courses on all kinds of wilderness survival.
He always charges customers from the big cities back east more because they usually are a lot more trouble to handle.
(I want to say right off that I do not think any Treeper falls into the big city idiot category, you all have brains that you know how to use and gobs of common sense.)
He says they think they know it all and do not pay attention to him and he has had to save their rear ends too many times over the years so he double or triple charges themright up front.
Many of them think because they live in the city where it can be dangerous and have “survived” they can handle anything, including or especially mountains and forest survival.
They expect the wildernes to be easy and simple and peaceful like in a lot of movies.
They think all of the danger and violence in the world comes from other people like they meet in the cities in bad neighborhoods.
They have no concept of weather or terrain or thirst or even their own panic being a threat to their lives.
Some of the situations they have gotten themselves and my friend, his staff and the other people taking the course into have been dangerous.
This is because they do not listen to any one they think they know every thing and they end up almost killing themselves and other people.
And these are adults, not teens who can be a bit unstable in the decision making area.
I don’t camp during blizzards.
I don’t hike in Death Valley in the middle of summer.
I want another option.
One thought…just my opinion…we are inundated with ‘words’ on social media without truly having an experience with or an understanding of their serious meaning. Social media posts make it very easy to think “oh I can do that”…without fully comprehending the risks involved.
Another good example the young man who at 19 had a permanent life altering surgery and is unhappy about it as his ‘mental health’ did not improve. Not fully understanding and being properly informed to where he could overcome the impulsive decision to remove body parts.
Common sense, a rare flower indeed.

We hiked all over the DV area about thirty years ago … in the winter. Of course that meant there were certain high peaks that couldn’t be explored. And, days were short but gorgeous “dark sky” nights are amazing.
The secret to desert hiking is simply to respect the weather and “plan accordingly.” If you do that, you and your companions – never hike alone! – can have a safe and beautiful time.

Was fortunate to do some remote camping there about 25 years ago. Amazing experience. Didn’t even want to fall asleep – mesmerized by the silence, Milky Way, coyotes.
Was hiking in nearby Ash Springs one day, and saw a movement out of the corner of my eye. A stealth bomber flew silently right over my head.
Good memories.
The stars at my upper desert property are dazzling. The coyotes come around and do their jam sessions. (No pets are outside.) I am somewhat isolated. Lots of of security — but I enjoy the solitude when I am there.
My rowdy middle school students are adorable, witty, and stinkers. Teaching is a busy & rewarding aspect of my life. However, to balance that “chaos” — I really enjoy the solitude when I am not working.
The route from Death Valley to California that my children and I travelled is a steep grade for a long distance. I was not used to driving in mountainous areas and my brakes heated so much that they quit working. We were able to pull to the side of the road.
A motorist stopped and told us to stay where we were and let the brakes cool and then drive in 3rd gear to get down the rest of the way. We had plenty of water, salty snacks, and hats. It was 115 degrees that day and we walked around and looked at petrified wood and rocks, but stayed in sight of the car.
The memory that has really stuck with me was how good chips and hot salsa tasted.

Many thanks for linking to that article. It brings back a lot of memories. The horrible Dutroux case erupted in 1996, when the Internet was only a few years old. It made it possible for me, living in Sweden, to follow the case not just by the “accepted/acceptable” news in our Swedish dailies and on our state-run radio and television but also in Belgian, French and British online newspapers. The online edition of the Daily Telegraph was excellent at the time. It was clear that a lot of very suspicious facts were kept away from us by our own media. Maybe it had to do with the fact that we had just voted to join the EU (with Brussels as its “capital”).
Ms Vos’s article brings up a lot of those suspicious facts, and the fact that Wikileaks managed to publish documents from the prosecutor in the Dutroux case certainly would not have increased Assange’s popularity among the European political “elite”.
However, the Daily Telegraph and others had already published a lot of interesting pieces; this one for instance regarding the Ballets Roses, sex orgies among the Belgian political establishment……..

When we vote for a party’s presidential candidate, we are actually voting for that party’s presidential elector for our specific congressional district. How are we supposed to vote for an elector if an elector has not been chosen and sworn in?
In Texas, the GOP electors are determined by a vote in our congressional district’s caucus at the state-wide convention. I think the democrats do the same. Since the dems supposedly flipped the GOP elector in Eddie Bernice Johnson’s profoundly blue district in 2016, the Republican Party of Texas and the state instituted rules that allow the removal and replacement of a faithless elector. The system in Texas is winner take all.
BTW, I think that elector, Chris Suprun, likely was a ringer who injected himself into the GOP convention system, not a Republican who flipped. By operating in a congressional district where Republican convention delegates are few and far between, he had an excellent shot at becoming the elector.
Since 2016, he has been busy running for various offices as a democrat. He has yet to win an elected public office and the democrats wouldn’t have him as a Dem elector for 2020.

In the book and in the interview, Chris describes how the neo-Marxists took over our institutions and how we can take them back. Their basic strategy is they followed Marx’s philosophy of “praxis.” The ideas is to forget “debate” and instead to “act.”
We often recall Salinsky and his Rules for Radicals and they’re interesting and we can learn from them. But the basic idea behind the rules, and the reason the rules work, is they basically are “actions.” They do not require people to sit around and talk about things. They tell people to act and how to act.
We need to act. As we learn, which some of the precinct strategy people are doing now, we need to formulate our own rules for acting.
The reason I’m making this post is not specifically to discuss Rufo’s ideas. My point is we need to do the same thing the left has done. “We the people” need to “act” to take our country back. We need to become experts at “praxis.”
We can’t wait for someone to organize us or tell us what to do. Each of us needs to look around and see where we can make a contribution, and big or small doesn’t matter. The point is to act to take our country back and not just talk about it or try to convince people we are right (no pun intended).
The problem with this approach is if you act like President Trump, who did nothing wrong, did or the J6 demonstrators did you get indicted, arrested and eventually convicted with a very long sentence for doing just misdemeanors or nothing at all!!!! ChiCom Joe can do this because he has control of the DOJ/FBI/IC/Social Media/the military/the msm!!! JMO
Yes, President Trump is the prime example of someone who acts. Other people we could mention are J6 people in jail and the electors (not sure that’s the right term, but hope you know who I mean) in Minnesota who just got “arrested.”
So yes, when the neo Marxists started and continued their “acting” over the last 50 or more years, they did not get pushback. None of us were arresting and jailing them or telling lies about them to try and make them people no one would listen to. Most of us were deluded that our elected representatives were doing their best to “make things right” (many of us didn’t realize both parties had the same goals). But we realize it now, which is the reality we need to deal with.
So yes, we’ve got it bad now because if we do act, we likely will get push back. Just like President Trump and everyone else who acts to fight for the country they want. The likelihood of getting push back is definitely a liability.
But notice, President Trump doesn’t quit. He keeps fighting.
So not only do we need to act, but we need to be prepared to fight. And we need to learn how to fight as smart as we can. One way to fight smart is to join groups with a purpose we support, for example, the precinct strategy people or moms for liberty or true the vote. There is some security in numbers, although the true the vote leaders just got out of jail. However, TPTB didn’t jail all members of the group. Another way to help is to donate, if you can, because all these groups need money. Another way to help is to learn as much as possible so if a chance comes up you will be prepared to jump in and make a difference.
Where we are is not wonderful, but if we don’t get going and make some changes, we will find ourselves in worse shape. I think that’s why President Trump keeps fighting. He knows things could get even worse, much worse.
One more example of something we can do that is “acting” as smart as we can is to consider infiltrating groups and thus learning and preparing. Gaining “intelligence” info is always a good idea in any endeavor.
In Rufo’s book he mentioned infiltration as one of the methods the neo Marxists have used over all the years they’ve been taking over the institutions.
We can infiltrate as well. Maybe not everyone is suited to a tactic like this. For example, I doubt I’d last very long because I’d want to speak up. But some people may be very good at maintaining their presence while gaining information and passing it to interested parties (for example to groups working on election integrity or education changes).
If nothing else, just spend some time thinking about the tactics the leftists use, like infiltration and like the rules for radicals. Or something I’ve started to do is to read more WW II history to learn how common people joined the fight, either individually or by joining groups.

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) has yet to issue court summons for about 82 percent of the illegal immigrants it allowed into the United States after a federal court ordered a halt on a Biden administration immigration parole program.
Judge Wetherell said DHS lacks any apparent plan to track down the approximately 41 percent of PWC parolees who failed to check in with ICE after being released subsequent to his TRO.
“The Court is skeptical that DHS is serious about tracking down the aliens who did not check in as directed or that it will take any action against them if it ever finds them,” Judge Wetherell wrote.
The Judge noted that ICE had similarly failed to provide any commitments to track down PWC parolees who did not report back to begin their removal proceedings. In addition to providing its tracking statistics for the 2,572 illegal immigrants DHS released, an ICE official said the agency “may take an enforcement action against those noncitizens” including issuing arrest warrants for those individuals, placing them in detention, and initiating their removal proceedings.
“Given that the initiation of removal proceedings is what was supposed to happen if the alien had checked in as directed, it is hard to understand why DHS thinks that aliens will take any of its directives seriously if their ‘punishment’ for not doing so ends up being the same thing that would have happened if they complied,” Judge Wetherell wrote.
