No the student loan nightmare we currently have was created by George W. Bush’s 2005 Bankruptcy Reform Law which prohibited student loans from being dischargeable via personal bankruptcy. One of his biggest donors was Alfred Lord, the then CEO of Sallie Mae. Then in 2010 the Kenyan federalized them. Return the industry to pre-2005 where loans were dischargeable, like credit card debt, auto loans, mortgages et al, via bankruptcy, and base student loans on borrower creditworthiness. This will put an end to the cash cow that has enriched universities at the expense of students who shouldn’t even be in college.
