Still, I admit to qualms that Trump has been indicted – as best anyone can tell – for the “crime” of (allegedly) misclassifying a payment in internal business records. Not exactly murder one. Especially since the charge comes from a prosecutor who said he would try to avoid charging armed robberies as felonies.
But forget about Trump for a minute. (As if.) The renewed focus on him makes it easy to forget for much of last winter, Florida governor Ron DeSantis and not Trump was public enemy number one.

I disagree with him elevating DeSantis here though. Many other governors took heat from the left. Kristi Noem never shut down and was attacked harder than DeSantis was early on. She, and several other red state governors (with better records than DeSantis) also equally survived attacks.

Man I’m glad the days of wandering the reference stacks and reading the microfilm of old newspapers at the library are pretty much over. People’s memories may be short but the internet remembers 🙂
The truth is that those different types of information repository still exist separately. The microfilms, readers, physical collections and special collections are still there and not available (mostly) to read on the Internet. Most libraries never had the budget to digitize them, so when doing historical research one still has to do it physically and in-person.
There’s also a philosophy among some librarians that the Net isn’t as safe as physical collections. Just try “hacking” stacks of old newspapers on shelves in a closet.

DeSantis NEVER “closed the Beaches”. The beaches in my county stayed open the whole time, except for a brief period when the two surrounding counties closed theirs, resulting in our beaches being OVER RUN by folks from THREE counties. So our county informed all that ours would close too, until the surrounding counties opened back up.
Once ours closed, the 2 counties bordering ours opened theirs up again cuz they saw the whole thing was just f*cking useless and ridiculous. So it lasted *maybe* a week or so here before all 3 counties opened the Beaches back up.
NOTE: DeSantis had NOTHING to do with any of this.
The only thing RDS said was “maintain groups smaller th/ 10 people”. That is NOT “closing beaches”.
And, in fairness to you all who keep spreading this Fake News, I have to admit that Trump also said this same BS at his Waco rally, which REALLY surprised me that even HE said something so f*cking stupid and easy to dispute.

Are you in St Johns County?. I live in Subdivision with deeded beach and they shut it down because everyone in Duval county was on A1A in Ponte Vedra Beach running through people’s back yards and parking all over the road. St Johns commissioners where worried about safety so they closed it down. When they did the extention I told the family I was going to take the risk so I jumped over the rope(the stupid libtards put up) and walked the beach. The sheriffs only patroled during day so I walked later in evening. The big mistake was in Duval County, they should have never closed the beach.

DeSantis did, indeed, sign an executive order to close beaches in two counties, Broward and Palm Beach. That did happen.
At the same time, it sounds like he gave the local authorities the ability whether to enforce his executive order or not. So, was he talking out of both sides of his mouth?
That being said, I don’t have criticism for Trump nor DeSantis in those early months because they were dealing with an unknown situation. The DeSantis team started the covid handling battle with Trump as part of their campaign. Trump’s just striking back, in kind.

The non violent form of protest needs media support and sympathetic coverage to be effective.
In today’s world, that is nearly impossible. The Jan 6 event for instance was immediately demonized with a scripted media response. The Canadian trucker protest also mostly treated unsympathetically by a media in sync with Trudeau. The same most everywhere else in the last few years.
There was empathy and concern from portions of the public. Almost entirely because of alternative internet media. Look at all the millions of dollars raised overnight in support of the truckers for instance
Things like that are a big reason why the internet censorship dictums are coming fast and hard worldwide. Especially with the Trump fiasco.
No matter how massive and peaceful any protest will be, it will be ignored or mischaracterized. And without grassroot word of mouth via internet channels, any extensive public solidarity and outrage will be severely handicapped.

I would be very surprised. That’s not how arraignments happen, especially with a first-time defendant of a non-violent offense. Defendants declare a plea, and unless they are deemed a flight risk by the guidelines, which he isn’t, they get released (sometimes paying bail) to await trial. He’s planning an evening press conference, so he’s clearly not expecting to be jailed.
Bragg had to have notified Mr. Trump and his team of the indictment, or there would have been no need to fly to NY for the arraignment. It’s not that extraordinary to have a sealed indictment in cases where prosecutors perceive a need to restrict press access. Defendants know they are being accused, and they find out the specifics at the arraignment. Whatever the charges are, there will be plenty of time to strategize. Given the busy court calendar and motions the Trump team might file, the trial could be more than a year from now.
