A poster at TGP got me curious….when he said that during combustion, vinyl chloride produces ‘large amounts’ of dioxin.

Our water supplies are being poisoned.
Look primarily at 1.4 Dioxane. It is a dangerous carcinogenic pollutant which is showing up in more and more waterways and groundwater. Dioxane cannot by removed on a large scale by municipal water plants so, it is continually ignored by governments and media. One source is the recycling of plastics.

Years ago, NCSU discovered it in the Cape Fear River and tributaries which supply many heavily populated areas in NC. . It was immediately covered up and still is.
It can be removed at home on a small scale with reverse osmosis and non-osmosis wide spectrum filters like ProPur. Caution though – municipal supplies now contain chloramines which destroy reverse osmosis membranes.
My guess is that the root of this coverup is that the train was carrying dioxane by-products from industrial and recycling plants destined to be “quietly disposed of”.

Yeah, I’ve been on my own water and treatment systems for nearly four decades. Heck, the water from the creek behind the house tests better than some municipal water I’ve seen from my past life working on the pumps that moved the stuff.
Sad. It didn’t used to be this way in this country. We’ve done it to ourselves. IMO, it’s a culture thing. Those not ‘conforming’ are shunned, cast out or killed.
If I’m not mistaken, I think an activated charcoal pre-filter can take out the chlorine compounds.
Also, to get rid of fluorine, an ion exchange resin post-filter is needed, because the fluorine ion is so very small.

“Dioxin” is name that encompasses a lot of different individual chemicals. From a toxicity perspective, the dioxins of most interest are the chlorinated dioxins, with the most toxic being 2,3,7,-8 tetrachlorodibenzodioxin (TCDD). TCDD has four chlorine atoms while vinyl chloride has one. Based on this and other considerations, my opinion is that in an uncontrolled fire involving vinyl chloride, TCDD and the other chlorinated dioxins believed to be especially toxic would be produced (at worst) in only trace quantities.

And while he presents a view of the West as it is, when it comes to the Western versus China/Russia oligarchy conflicts, I’ll chose the Western side. Both are evil in various ways. It’s a lesser of two evils choice, just as with the Rep vs Dim UniParty choice.
Those two oligarchy factions are our only real choices anyway considering the vast majority of easily propagandized and willfully uninformed/ignorant humans who surround us who have no idea what is actually going on or, if they do, don’t care much. Approximately twenty years my career ensured I would come into contact with school age kids.
That would use some of those homes on a part time basis when attending high school.
There were no adults in those homes, and we encountered youngsters that had a $5000.00 per month ( allowance)

We have known almost since the beginning of the coronavirus epidemic that young people face much lower risks from Covid than the elderly.
But Dutch researchers now have offered what should be the last word on the issue, using data from a national registry to show that even people in their thirties and forties have a risk from Covid almost too low to measure.
The researchers compared the results from a nationwide sample of Covid infections in the Netherlands at several points in 2020 and 2021 to nationwide excess death totals. To determine the Covid death rate, they assumed all the excess deaths resulted from Covid infections.
This method likely overstates Covid deaths. Some extra deaths were likely drug overdoses, suicides, or untreated heart attacks and other lockdown-related health problems. In addition, the sampling technique they used may have understated infections.
Put those issues aside, since they don’t change the most important finding. The researchers determined the death rate from Covid infections was about 1 percent overall in the Netherlands during 2020. (Again, that figure almost certainly is high.)

As we all know there was a very significant vinyl chloride spill recently as a result of stupidity (yep) in Eastern Ohio. The Governor has raised hell about the material going through “his” state without notice, but the facts of the matter are that this material is utterly essential to many things in our modern life which we all take for granted.
Specifically, it is the precursor for both PVC pipe and most common wire insulation these days; I presume you’d like to be able to wire a house or pipe water and waste around. In particular PVC waste pipes are the standard for such use and your house (assuming it was built after the older cast iron went away) is full of the stuff, never mind all the electrical wiring in, well, everything.
So calls to get rid of it out of transportation corridors are stupid — unless you’d like to crap in the street again, of course, and go back to a world without electrical power, lights and appliances.

There are many people trying to claim that this derailment is the equivalent of Chernobyl in America. Nonsense. Chernobyl released long-persistence and soluble radioisotopes into the environment — things that have half-lives of anywhere from minutes (not a huge deal) to tens of thousands of years or more (a very big deal.) This stuff, while very nasty in the immediate sense is simply not long-persistence (unlike many chemical poisons such as dioxins) so while the acute and immediate danger is extremely severe the longer-term impact — years and decades down the road — is not.

I tend to agree with this assessment. This is not a contamination that will persist for centuries.
