Retired Magistrate here: Just talked to another friend who knew nothing about the train derailment. She was very worried about the balloons in the sky. I told her that she should be worried about what happened in East Palestine, Ohio. I showed her some videos and she was shocked.
This is a huge cover up. Again, if this were a wealthy blue area it would be all over the news. Since it is a low income red area it would seem that these people are expendable and uh well, nothing to see here.

VCM…Vinyl Chloride Monomer is highly flammable. It has physical properties similar to Freon in that it will flash into a gaseous state at atmospheric pressure.
If allowed to escape into the atmosphere it will form a vapor cloud and if said vapor cloud finds an ignition source a very large explosion could occur.
VCM is also carcinogenic, specifically causing a rare form of liver cancer called angiosarcoma.
VCM is manufactured by combining ethylene and chlorine in reactors to produce EDC Ethylene Dichloride. It is then thermally cracked in furnaces which function as pyrolysis reactors.
VCM and EDC have an exposure limit of 1 PPM parts-per-million.
(I worked in a VCM unit for six years)
VCM actually smells good…it was used as a surgical anesthetic which was discontinued due to needing to exceed the LEL Lower Explosive Limit to be effective.

I came across a site the other day, NOT a news site, more like a blog by a chemist, regarding the spill and the decision to burn of the VC gas.
The site said that the danger they were attempting to avert, and did avert, was a thermobaric or fuel air explosion (FAE – very bad) resulting from a combination of aerosolated flammable solvents and the VC gas. It went through a list of the chemicals and solvents in the derailed tankers and how they might have intereacted with the VC to result in an FAE. According to that site, burning off the VC was the best of REALLY BAD alternatives, a responsible course of acton, and it worked.
Of course, now I can’t find the site and didn’t bookmark it. Been googling and can’t find it again. Perhaps someone here may have some better luck finding it.
In situations like this, too many people don’t understand there is no “good” solution. You have to take the least dangerous to everyone around. As a former firefighter, I can tell you that this is the best solution. You can’t just go in and “clean it up”. You have jumbled tank cars keeping you from fighting the fire effectively, and the danger of a BLEVE (Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion is a real possibility, though that usually happens with pressurized gas tanks, which might have been involved, too.
I’ll trust the Incident Commander on the scene who has ALL of the information, not frantic, screaming citizens who have no clue of what the ramifications could have been.

If there are different chemicals in each tanker car, with the possibility that they can form dangerous compounds if they mix during an accident, then perhaps there should be Federal rgulations that a train cannot have cars with those chemicals travelling together, that there can only be compatible chemicals traveling in on a single train.

What we do have is the outrage…I did hear someone yesterday talk about all the train derailments and that most are due to broken rails. Lack of infrastructure upkeep.
I doubt it was Dewine’s call, at least it shouldn’t have been. The firefighter in charge of the scene should have authotity to make the call, perhaps in consultation with the appropriate chemical engineers and perhaps meteorologists. And yes, I do trust my fellow American experst who are appropriately educated and trained in their fields, at least where this sort of thing is concerned. This country is filled with people who know their stuff.
It was shocking to see the poisonous plume stopped at 1,000 feet due to the inversion.
That seemed like a bad mistake — keeping poisonous gas close to the ground.
Now hearing the liquid could have started a massive fireball had it not been handled the way it was, it’s a good thing a massive fireball did not start under that inversion.
Allow an explosion of fire to spread far and wide, or put poison in the air that goes even further; what a choice to make.

Looks like a hot box fire, packing and dried grease combusting from friction in the axle bearings. Common enough that most railroads have trackside detectors to thermal-scan passing cars, and radio the engineer to stop immediately.

The video shows the underside of the car(s) on fire and still running on the track. Apparently the trackside detectors that were thermal-scanning the passing cars didn’t tell the engineer to stop immediately.
Or they were ignored to maintain schedule. Those sensors are pretty robust. Not to mentions most modern trains have alarms built into the cars themselves that transmit to the lead car and trailing engine. Did this train have two engines (IDK when it’s required), front and back? If so, it alarms in both.

I read where the last two hot box detectors triggered an alert to the engineer! The video shows the axle and journal bearings were ignited. I thought originally it was a tank car, but it turns out to be a covered hopper that was lit up.

Average people don’t understand that stuff…what they do understand is that their lives have possibly been placed in danger and at the bare minimum, disrupted. I would think that this sort of thing should not happen in this day and age. We see hurricanes coming, and blizzards…tornadoes, we get a hint with weather….this?
And probably do not have the discernible income to survive for very long in an evacuated state of being.

Has the railroad (writ large) ever communicated to the householders along their routes where they are hauling hazmat – and nuke – that they, the railroads- are hauling it? Are they required to?
Civil defense (showing my age) used to do the event scenarios publicly and at least one in my hometown was a train derailment. And damned if that wasn’t useful when it happened in real life. And civil defense was tuned towards empowering (didn’t use that word then) people to plan and protect themselves and the community.
Now the Emergency Management Agency (county, city) writes plans that say well we gotta manage until the state or the feds get here, and we’ll do whatever they tell us is best. And KEEP your receipts! No development of notification systems – well we’ll use the local TV stations – does a long chemically involved explanation or even a press conference provide timely help and info when the sheriff is knocking on the door saying get out?
The EPA (Act) also includes a section titled Community Right to Know.
Norfolk has effected a big clean up of the area, there are still burnt tanker cars scattered along the tracks, there is a retention pond, and some dirt being hauled out – so to where, and there should be tests of that soil. Long term the owner of the chemicals will be part of lawsuits, and yes, the railroad, but the establishment of liability will tie up further remediation for years.
If I seem caustic about this -my apologies – I’ve seen a variety of events where there were prevention opportunities, delegation of responsibility to have things prepped that fell short, ineptitude , laziness, and corruption. It hits a raw nerve.
Another observation from an interesting life- The more things happen, the more things happen. Is it nerves, a karmic storm, general community anxiety, but the piling on of bad things, stupid things, lack of focused response, media distraction causes more bad things to happen. That’s the thing- the incident commander may or may not have knowledge of the various chemicals. The incident commander truly only has knowledge on response- how to deploy the response agencies in a timely manner to address the situation. They rely on “experts” to decide on the proper path. They may have knowledge of some but not all and part of their job is to ensure the proper “experts” are brought in. And in this case Norfolk Rail was more than likely providing the experts via the client for which they were transporting the chemicals.

All the panic over this reminds me of the Deepwater Horizon failure. A couple of weeks of terrifying video and commentary about how the Gulf and Gulf Coast are forever destroyed, followed by the Gulf of Mexico healing itself inside a few years.

I should have defined it before I used it. The term BLEVE is an acronym for Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion, and they’re mega bad news. In this case it would have been equivalent to a boiler explosion if the boiler was full of toxic flammables.
In the worst case those tanks could have had a chain of BLEVEs with an ensuing VCE Vapor Cloud Explosion, akin to a fuel air bomb. I don’t know how much damage there would have been but the potential was incredible for something of that magnitude.

It is now being reported that a train car axle/wheel was likely responsible for the derail. There’s video out there now of the train passing a camera, sparks flying.
Vinyl Chloride, used to make plastics, is transported in pressurized and refrigerated railroad cars. VC is normally a gas. The compressed liquid has a boiling point of 8 degrees F. Yes, 8 deg F. Immediately when a tanker car is breached, the gas begins to boil due to temperature. This quickly creates a leaking and highly pressurized vessel as it vents and goes back to it’s natural gaseous state.
VC is highly toxic, flammable, and carcinogenic.
Look up the term BLEVE, as it relates to fighting fires. I noted a few comments from firefighters on here.

I had been wondering for a while what the DS was going to do about the Amish.
They have large families.
They don’t get vaccinated – that means no sterilization by jab shot. When the jabs rolled out, I quipped to someone who got the jab that the Amish would inherit the earth after all. With at least a percentage of the injected sterilized or dying, the odds of accelerated Amish expansion (and they have been expanding) seemed good.
They raise their own food, and are as little reliant on the supply chain as any group in America.
They are devout Christians.
They have tight communities that provide resilience against social degeneration and chaos.
They turned out to vote for Donald Trump in a very visible way, something of a break with traditional attitudes towards politics.

From what I could find out it looks like they did the burn on feb. 6, does anyone know about the direction of prevailing winds that day? or on following days?

The video SAYS, and visually shows there was an “inversion layer” 1000′ above ground, that effectively kept all of the fumes, smoke etc. from the burn, in the zone from ground to 1000′ up.
And, in the video it doesn’t appear there was much of a “prevailing wind” it just hangs there.

There was a post on a reddit thread showing a dispersion model to the southeast. It was taken down. A meteorologist of a local area station had also done one – but I don’t have the specifics of station.

I feel for people who don’t know the chemistry, but the reactions I see appear to be based on fear of the unknown and of the officials who have abused our trust. First, we are very lucky to have solid engineers design the tankers because this could have been much worse due to the volatility of vinyl chloride monomer (VCM). Second, seeing the dead fish in the creeks indicates they really had only the one choice of creating the combustion on their terms to limit the damage to the water.ground. They chose the best worst option and since it thankfully wasn’t raining the risk of creating HCl acid rain was low. The only other compound of concern is phosgene, but the concentration is low and would drop rapidly in the atmosphere.
Now this is all assuming there were no other chemicals being transported…
To that point, I hope someone had the wherewithal to collect a water sample of the creek where the dead fish were found and also a couple soil samples. We could chip in for processing costs to have an independent lab perform the tests.
Naive question; Was there really no way to off-load these chemicals? To remove the cars and transport them by train or truck to wherever they could be safely disposed of? Or to transfer the chemicals to other containers? There is so much heavy equipment available, I am mystified that this controlled burn-off is “the best worst.”
The best worst option if the tanks were leaking, which was probably the case. It’s transported as a liquid, but boils at around 8 degrees Fahrenheit, so it was boiling off rather quickly. In its gaseous state vinyl chloride is some nasty stuff. There simply wasn’t time to do anything other than exercise the painful option of burning it off. Not the ideal, but under the circumstances there was no other choice.
