Do windmills spin in ice storms? Do layers of ice magnify the suns rays before they reach photovoltaic cells? Asking for family in Tejas..
Remember on 14 Feb 2021 when the ice storm blew through Texas and wind power generation, normally 35% of production, went to zero? At the same time they doubled natural gas power generation. It would have been more, but pipes were icing up through neglect of this part of our infrastructure. Consequently, there were widespread power outages, including at my house. I was fortunate since I had the foresight to have a generator, but neighbors huddled around gas fireplaces in the dark with outside temps of 17 deg.
Solar production, normally negligible, was also zero. One nuclear reactor went down. Coal piles were buried in snow and ice.
Since then we have increased our reliance on wind power! I have increased the size of my generator.
My niece recently moved to rural Texas from southern california, she’s very conservative. She did not like the earthquakes of s.cal but she is now terrified of tornadoes and is going through her first ice storm. It think it will be a learning curve for her to love Texas.
Tell her if there are no clouds/rain she doesn’t have to worry about tornadoes. Earthquakes, though, strike day or night without warning.
As a guy who spent a reasonable amount of time in California and born and raised in Northern Texas (tornado alley) I find neither appealing though I’m just so accustomed to tornadoes out there it just doesn’t bother me that much.
Then I moved to NVa and later into the Carolinas… Holy hell! I never knew there was such a thing as rain without thunder, lightning and tornadoes. It felt weird at first.
Seems like if she’s looking for a place that feels safe from most adverse weather, I’d recommend the Carolinas for that.
Under normal circumstances, we have a tornado occasionally as well as hurricanes but that’s not often. A direct hit from a hurricane could be a problem but if you are prepared for it. A standby generator is a little slice of heaven on earth if the lying liar and vicious old man doesn’t finish killing natural gas and propane. I’ve lived in NC most of my life and I’m not afraid of any of them…….the DC administration is the biggest problem but that goes for all of us. 😎

I never knew what rain was all about until I was in Dallas. I would watch on TV people stranded in their cars and wonder why they would drive there car in to a stream. Well I discovered that a hard rain in Dallas would cause the road to fill with so much water that I could run a row boat down the street. They have special lanes on the highway for flash flood runoffs.

In all of the places that I have lived, I have never seen it raining so hard that the windshield wipers can’t keep up, except here in California.

So smart to get a generator! We live in rural CA Central Valley and the electricity goes out regularly, usually not for long, but it’s a given — old infrastructure! Our big generator keeps everything running! The longest lights-out event was about 3/4 of a day a couple of years ago. We also have a fish pond, so being able to keep the pumps going is vital! I used to worry like crazy every time there was a flicker, especially during heat waves!

Winter is particularly harsh. It got so cold after 3 days at home we had to get a hotel room and sneak 2 dogs in.

Heck, they don’t spin in good weather when demand is high. I just looked at Ercot’s data for current generation in Texas. Natural gas is generating 68.9% of power, Coal and Lignite is at 18.7%, and Nuclear is at 8.3%. If math serves me correctly, 95.9% of Texas electricity is being generated by reliable sources. Who’d a thunk that. Solar is producing 0.2% (it’s cloudy and they are covered in ice), wind is producing 3.3% (it’s not blowing and the bird blenders are not spinning), Hydro is at 0.1%, power storage (batteries) at 0.5% and other at 0.0%. What is really telling, is the installed capacity of wind is just under 38,000 MW. Right now, the wind is only producing 2,050MW of electricity or 5.4% of its installed capacity. Understand, this is the rule and not the exception. When our need is highest, wind sucks.

This month the govenment might have blinked –considering relaxing some of the hijab/clothing rules. Like possibly getting a first time warning in writing with agreement to not repeat the offense. Otherwise off to prison for a few years.
And the Tourism and Heritage Minister is also pushing for the morality police and men in general to not be harsh with the women over this issue (harsh means beatings which is allowed/expected).
So right now in the big cities some women are defying the laws and going out without the hijab. But there is pushback from those wanting to maintain control — the morality police and others have responded by stepping up their enforcement, beatings and jail.
The teenage girls were quite brave. Not just the hijab removal. But a female daring to be disrespectful to a male, let alone a male leader. That itself is a serious offense and any male family member or even a man on the street is allowed, expected to enact physical discipline.
But standing up in that manner –yikes. Courage is an act not a feeling. They have it in spades.

I remember taking a photo very similar to that on Sanibel Island nearly 40 years ago.

DH and I vacationed on Sanibel the two middle weeks of October for 20 years before moving to Lake Suzy, FL. Then we were just up the road an hour and were there often. It broke my heart to see what the storms did to it. I was talking to a friend in Port Charlotte this morning and one of the things she mentioned is most beaches are closed because of the debris buried in the sand, including broken glass. She also said you mostly can’t get in the water because it is contaminated by the boats and autos that are in it. She said somewhere they have brought in a big boat or barge with a crane on it to get boats out of the water. It’s been four months and she is just now getting roof replaced. Having to wait on most other repairs. It took over two months to get her yard debris picked up. She is in her mid 80’s and by herself so it is tough going for her.
So sad. We took many vacations there and enjoyed the time spent there. As I remember everything was a local business other than the Dairy Queen. Just a great place to relax and enjoy the beach and the ocean without the crowds you find in most places. It will never be the same after the storm I fear.

Its not hard to stop events like Tyre Nichols from happening in the future.
Solution: In the event of an allegatio nof serious and abusive use of force by a police department against a citizen both the Chief of Police (or Sheriff) and the Mayor (or other chief executive of said jurisdiction, and yes, that could be a Governor or even President) stands accused as an accessory before the fact on a criminal basis and must defend same in open court.
This would force accountability back on the heads of the department for their hiring, training and monitoring of said officers and, if they got it wrong they’d have to defend it in court. If they were found responsible then they go to prison for the same term as the officers who committed the offense, as an accessory before the fact carries the same liability as the principal.
These events happen not because of “racism” (really people; five black cops beat a black dude and that’s racism?) but rather because we allow the hiring and retention of police officers who are unfit to have a badge. The persons responsible for that, which are the head of the department and the head of the Executive of that specific jurisdiction, who is the “CEO” of said department when you get down to it (the Chief of Police or whatever the title is is the COO or similar) have to be held criminally responsible because as an incorporated entity anything else, such as suing, just winds up with someone else paying the bill.
You can’t transfer liability for a prison sentence and no matter how rich, poor or entitled you might be it still sucks and in the case of manslaughter ten years or more is ten years and its still going to suck.
Make this change in the law and there will be no more Tyre Nichols’ events. Not one. You can bet on it.

Arizona law and precedent is quite simple: a successful election challenger must only show that the published results are “in doubt.” The challenger doesn’t have to speculate as to “who, when, why, or how.” Doesn’t have to accuse anyone of wrongdoing nor “intent.” Doubt is enough. (If a crime was committed, that is a separate matter for another day, but irrelevant to the challenge.)
The law also protects the challenger. She must make her claims under penalty of perjury, but without fear if she did not lie. If you think something’s wrong, you’re encouraged to come forward.
Their law provides two remedies. The Court can either “declare the rightful winner” (as they did, about a hundred years ago, in another gubernatorial race). Or, it can order a runoff election – “do it over, and do it right this time.” Under the present circumstances, I’d order a do-over. Because, frankly, what’s coming out of Maricopa County is pure garbage. Completely unreliable. Nonsense.
P.S.: The trial judge in the Lake case had no legal authority to do anything that he did. His arbitrary decisions and standards flew in the face of established precedent set by the Arizona Supreme Court nearly a hundred years ago. For this offense, I think that he should be formally censured by his superiors and possibly removed from his post. He should be dealt with quite harshly.
It is impossible to assert that he did not know what the law and precedent of his State actually is – in fact, Lake’s attorneys cited(!) some of those precedents in their lawsuit as filed. A trial judge is supposed to follow the law and precedent as it now is, not write it for himself. He had no authority to dismiss any of the ten counts, nor to dismiss the case itself.
In Arizona, the legal right to raise an election challenge is carefully protected. Because voters are entitled to believe that the election was correct “beyond reasonable doubt.” Anyone is entitled to step forward and assert that it was not, and to be heard on all reasons offered. (Under penalty of perjury.)

Funny how that Judge in her first case totally ignored ….not only that but limited …her “right” to show evidence. Someone scared this judge…..IMO when the case was concluding the judge was visibly upset/irritated as he gathered his notes and stood up to leave the courtroom. His verdict was so quickly reached there was no way he could have studied the volumes of evidence submitted by KL.
He was very simply and very completely “out of bounds.” Period. The challenger has no burden to explain nor to point fingers. A successful election challenge in Arizona could find “an honest mistake.” The only standard is doubt.
The way forward was extremely simple: “this Court finds that the plaintiff has clearly established doubt, and therefore hereby orders that a runoff election shall be held within thirty days for the offices of Governor and Attorney General, not under the supervision of any of the same county or state officers.” Over and done, and entirely non-controversial. The obvious solution. If they screwed it up, do it over. Because the people of the State are legally entitled to: “beyond reasonable doubt.”
