I work with a lot of women like that. At an inner city safety net hospital…there is a chasm of divide in how the women relate to the patients of their ethnicity. Authoritarian and expecting respect, but not getting it…but you won’t get much from a heroin or cocaine addict in dire need of the next fix.
It was a test of our “leaders”, how many of them will willing to sign our rights away for us, over a glorified flu?

My previous piece on this general topic was on the difference between people who take a science view of things and an engineering view of them. I explained how an engineering view, when faced with an unexpected failure of some sort, immediately stops whatever they’re doing, reverts it if something was recently changed.
A “science” view holds that statistical power is enough.
The problem is that each human is not a statistical problem; you are an engineering example. That is, there is only one of you just like for any individual road over water there is one bridge. One bridge failure is not tolerable because there may be cars on the bridge when it fails and the people in the cars will die.
The key to an engineering view is that engineering looks at the world as deterministic and thus statistical failures are not permitted. That is, it looks at the world like physics does even given our imperfect understanding, and thus seeks to place outcomes well beyond confidence intervals.

There are whole engineering field built around failure and probability of failure and risk assessment.
There is not a single engineer who does not accept that there will be a failure or that t here is some level of probability a failure of some type. ALL Engineers design to meet some probability standard.
Further what this clown fails to see that engineering and scientific minded folks handle failure the exact same way. If there is a failure, both seek to understand “WHY” and then determine “HOW” to address it.
Engineering is a science and science applies engineering practices and principles.
Excellent comment. This Denninger guy may mean well but he doesn’t understand what he’s talking about. I think he’s trying to avoid the reality that the people who imposed the vax on society didn’t care about the harm the vax caused. It wasn’t due to some supposed “science v. engineering” distinction, which as you point out doesn’t really exist. Using Denninger’s logic, we’d ban cars and gas heating because people die in accidents.

Here’s the functional difference, and what you must understand: Everything in the universe is in fact deterministic.
But wait, you say — medicine never seems to be. Nor does weather. Nor, for that matter, is so-called “climate science”; remember we were told by scientists the polar icecaps would be gone 10 years ago? Well, they’re not. The weatherman can’t even tell you with certainty whether it will rain tomorrow at 2:00 PM and he’s wrong more-often than right. The NOAA forecasters can’t give you where the hurricane will hit in five days and how strong it will be either, or if a tornado will form.
Every one of these outcomes is in fact deterministic — that is, it has exactly one outcome, just like hydrogen and oxygen always produce water and energy when combined at or above the activation level of heat.
Note that it was, for quite some time, believed that a rock and a feather were acted upon differently by gravity and this, it was believed, was part of why birds could fly. It wasn’t until we figured out how to construct a vacuum pump and remove the air from a chamber we proved otherwise. That which looked not to be deterministic (gravity) in fact is; it didn’t look that way because we did not understand enough of the full system in which it applied.
So why is it that when you are told you have cancer the doctor cannot tell you whether or not he can cure it? At best he can give you some set of odds. Ever notice that a medical study that claims a “p < 0.001”, that is, almost-certainly the result is allegedly real, still does not claim that everyone is cured or helped? It doesn’t have to in order to get that “p” value — it just has to have an outcome that is wildly improbable to be due to chance.
It is active fraud to use such to claim you should or must do a given thing. To suggest a course of action is fine, but to cajole, coerce or mandate it is not.
Why? Because you’re always a trial of one.

My favorite book on health and health care for people over 50 – Rethinking Aging: Growing Old and Living Well in an Overtreated Society by Dr. Nortin Hadler, MD. His other books, Worried Sick, The Last Well Person, are also enlightening about all the promises about various tests and treatments that we are hassled about on a daily basis.
I think I will read that book. It has become a problem for me, trying to figure out whether little health changes I’m noticing are just normal aging, or the beginnings of a medical issue that needs attention and treatment.
We have way too many drugs to “manage” but not cure a condition.
Prevention is a no-no as well! God forbid we prevent ourselves from getting sick in the first place!

From a widget building perspective, I found as a manufacturer running my own business that customers in general didn’t care where stuff came from as long as it was cheap and worked. I didn’t service hair clipper buyers, rather the industries that built hair clippers.
Globalization and cheap foreign labor won the widget building wars and ultimately drove many US-focused manufacturers out of business or overseas to compete.
I’m not too bitter; just enough to be a menace 🙂

I get emails from madeinusaforever.com that features US made goods. The problem is, they are all more expensive than goods made in China, etc. This country has already devolved into 2 classes – the upper class that can afford US made goods and the rest of us who maybe could, but it would be a stretch. We are becoming like Mexico, where there isn’t much of a middle class. There is beautifully made furniture made by a company in Vermont that I would love to own, but it would not be a wise use of our funds to pay that much for a piece of furniture.

Pretty much every electric trimmer has a built in obsolescence date, either from poor design, poor build or if it’s battery powered as Lithium Batteries are good for only 5 years at max.
In business they call that planned obsolescence.
They plan and design things to have an exact life to suit the company’s purpose.
A machine that has parts that wear out at different intervals so they can sell parts.
About the time the machine is paid for it cost so much in upkeep you get a new one.
Some of the machine tools in my shop dated from the post-war period and some of the tooling dated from during the war. All American-made. Cincinnati, Pratt and Whitney, Bridgeport, Greaves, Ingersol Rand. Even the bridge crane parts came from that period from a United States Steel production facility.
On the domestic front, ha, here’s a picture I took during a repair I did just last week on a 55 year old oven at my CA place. Original to the house. It’s a Whirlpool. Picture is of the back of the control/clock panel when I was testing it.
I also am still running a similar vintage Hobart dishwasher at that property too. Original to the house when it was built in 1968.
Anyway, having worked in industry for decades, I saw how beancounters and lawyers took our improvements in engineering and cut the margins of safety and durability to the bone to save money and fluff profits. Everything is now short term. Brand for life is a thing of the past. Remember Kenmore families? I can remember scores in our neighborhood in 50’s and 60’s. Everything was Kenmore. I was a Craftsman kid. Nothing other than Craftsman tools. American made. Guaranteed for life.
No more. Now we deal with supply chain shortages and biological warfare. FUBAR.

Georde Kennan, the remarkable U.S. diplomat and probing observer of international relations, is famous for forecasting the collapse of the Soviet Union. Less well known is his warning in 1948 that no Russian government would ever accept Ukrainian independence.
