When I saw the video of what had happened, my immediate reaction – beyond fear for Hamlin’s life – was, I suspect, the same as most of yours. Had Damar Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest? Were the mRNA vaccines ultimately responsible, perhaps by causing myocarditis that left him vulnerable?
My second reaction was: this is not the moment to discuss these questions. At the time, no one could even be certain if Hamlin was alive. I said as much on Twitter, as the teams disappeared into their locker rooms and the stadium remained silent and the National Football League called the game off (a step that took far too long)
Then I started to see the tweets.
A few came from vaccine skeptics and mentioned mRNA. But more came from physicians – mostly the same “MedTwitter” physicians who have been strongly public vaccine advocates – diagnosing Hamlin’s collapse as a case of commotio cordis, an interruption in the heart’s electrical rhythm caused by sudden impact to the chest wall.
The subtext to these tweets, which in some cases was not even subtext but stated openly, was: the vaccines did not cause what you just saw. And if you even consider that possibility, much less say so out loud, you are a ghoul. Commotio cordis, fine. Vaccine-caused heart damage, not fine.
I was stunned.

Time for a story in Q+A format. Why?
By now, you have probably heard about the Science Immunology paper showing that people who have received mRNA Covid vaccines produce more of an unusual antibody called IgG4 over time. A number of mRNA skeptics, including me, wrote about it last week.
But the reasons why the paper is so troubling may still not be clear. So here’s a (with luck) digestible explanation, starting with what is probably the most important question: what’s the worst-case scenario?

I think the middle two charts in this image does a good job of illustrating the situation. The vaccine was the Pfizer two-dose “Comirnaty”. The first two doses were administered 3-4 weeks apart and the booster was administered approximately 7 months after the second dose.
The chart labels are:
“before” is prior to vaccination
“post 1st” is 10 days after first dose of the series
“post 2nd” is 10 days after the second dose of the series
“FU post 2nd” is 210 days after the second dose of the series
“post 3rd” is 10 days after the booster
“FU post 3rd” is 180 days after the booster
Based on other research the assumption is that the most useful antibody for combatting the COVID virus is IgG3. IgG4 is counterproductive because it induces tolerance, a good thing if you suffer from allergies but a bad thing if you are fighting a virus. So ideally one would have relatively high IgG3 and relatively low IgG4.
The response looks good after the 1st and 2nd doses. But 210 days after the 2nd dose IgG3 has dropped and IgG4 has increased. The booster doesn’t help much, and in fact for some of the recipients it seems to make their antibody ratios worse. This could explain why boosted people are more susceptible to COVID now.
It’s also important to note that the COVID virus mutates but the vaccine does not (nor does your natural immunity from prior COVID infection). 7 months is a long time in COVID world.
I would like to see the antibody levels of someone who has been infected with COVID. I’d like to know if COVID sufferers also show that ratio change of IgG3 and IgG4 7 months after being infected. Does anyone recall seeing that info anywhere?
Reminder: this is the worst case scenario, this may not happen.

First, Berenson seems to have appropriated the idea of his article from one or more people who already analyzed the antibody study. I see Berenson doesn’t give credit to any of them. There was significantly less virus transmission by children and adolescents compared to adult index cases with a secondary attack rate of 0.29 vs. 0.54. With the caveat that the results do not necessarily apply to the Delta and Omicron variants, we conclude that children and adolescents are less susceptible for SARS-CoV-2 infection, more frequently show an asymptomatic course of disease and are less infective than adults.
Regarding the first sentence about secondary attack rate, which is the probability that an infection will be spread to another person in the group (in this case, to another person in the household), notice that for adults it’s 0.54 and for kids it’s 0.29. Does 0.29 look like zero to anyone? 0.29 is little more than half of 0.54, so it would be more reasonable to summarize by saying something like “kids are half as risk to others as adults are”. But when it comes to highly transmissible COVID, that’s not really saying much.
I suspect the authors of the research had a goal in mind so they tailored the study and their results with that goal in mind. I get that people don’t want their kids to have to wear masks in school and I’m staying out of that one because I don’t have kids in school and I’ll leave the decision to the parents. Science studies shouldn’t have such goals.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KFVS) – Governor Mike Parson says he will not grant the clemency request of Missouri death row inmate Amber McLaughlin.
McLaughlin is scheduled to die by lethal injection at the prison in Bonne Terre on Tuesday, January 3 for killing Beverly Guenther, a former girlfriend, in 2003.
Her execution will mark the first time an openly transgender inmate has been put to death in the U.S.
“McLaughlin’s conviction and sentence remains after multiple, thorough examinations of Missouri law. McLaughlin stalked, raped, and murdered Ms. Guenther. McLaughlin is a violent criminal,” said Governor Parson in a released statement. “Ms. Guenther’s family and loved ones deserve peace. The State of Missouri will carry out McLaughlin’s sentence according to the Court’s order and deliver justice.”
According to the Associated Press, a clemency petition cited McLaughlin’s traumatic childhood and mental health issues, which the jury never heard at her trial.
The petition also included reports citing a diagnosis of gender dysphoria, a condition causing anguish and other symptoms as a result of a disparity between a person’s gender identity and their assigned sex at birth.
McLaughlin’s attorney, Larry Komp, said sexual identity was “not the main focus” of the clemency request.
Elsewhere on the web it was noted that a judge, early on, referred to the defendant by their biological sex presumably “male”….(do we know what a ‘man’ is?/s)….and called him “Mr. McLaughlin”. Sorry, no link. Lots of articles out there.
While I abhor the crimes, capital punishment always troubles me. When executions are announced, although well deserved, it bothers me deeply. Will I stand in front of a prison and protest? No. But I will pray, with a fervent heart, asking the Lord to forgive the perpetrator. And that when he meets his Maker…he is humble and repentant.
I like that the judge referred to McLaughlin appropriately.
I’m for eye-for-an-eye punishment myself. I was totally for setting off a pressure cooker full of nails and other sharp bits 3 feet away from Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. It probably wouldn’t kill him, maybe just obliterate a few limbs, blow out his ear drums, and imbed 1000 pieces of shrapnel in what he has left of his body.

Following the kabuki theater of the House Speaker Election reminds one of an old old college football game joke …. Dallas Radio personality Terry Dorsey did the best rendition about 35 years ago on KPLEX, at the time.

They loose the coin toss but still get 1st possession of the ball …. and many plays later settle for a 4th Quarter field goal, to barely win the game.
